Faculty Experience and
Expertise in China
Applied Linguistics
Cheng Luo, Associate Professor of Applied
Linguistics, conducts research on language
universals in typological linguistics, focus
structure, second language literacy, and
acquisition of second language high digit
numerical expressions. He is also an adjunct
professor at Wuhan University where he
teaches short term courses each year. Luo
holds visiting professorships with Guangxi
University and Xiangfan University. In
addition, at Brock he has hosted many
visiting international scholars and professors
from China.
Biological Sciences
Recently Michael Bidochka, Professor in the
Department of Biological Sciences travelled to
China to take part in the planning of a fungal
genome sequencing initiative led by Chinese
academics. During his stay, he was invited to
present seminars at the Shanghai institute of
Plant Physiology and Ecology and Chongquing
University. He also visited scientists at
Southwest Agricultural University at
Chongqing, at Chengdu University and
Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. The fungal
genome project involves sequencing and

analysis of the genomes of up to five insect
pathogenic fungi. By sequencing the genomes
and comparative analysis of the genes, the
scientists hope to determine which genes are
required for insect virulence. The even broader
implications are to research the evolution of
pathogen virulence factors and strategies that
pathogens use to infect their hosts.
Education
Susan Drake, Professor of Education, visited
Hong Kong in November 2008 and conducted
a seminar/workshop on integrated curriculum
assessment at the Interdisciplinary and
Creative Arts Education Summit organized by
the Hong Kong Institute of Education.
Chunlei Lu, Assistant Professor of Education,
has received research grants from the Social
Sciences and Humanities Research Council of
Canada (SSHRC) and Sport Canada as Primary
Investigator of “Chinese-Canadians’
Perspectives on Health and Fitness.” Lu has
also published many papers in journals for
physical education. Recently, his article “The
dragon has awoken: A cross-cultural
perspective on sports in China” was accepted
by Harvard Asian Pacific Review, a premier
journal featuring issues of the Asia-Pacific
region.
Tony DiPetta, Associate Professor of Education
and Director of the Centre for Continuing
Teacher Education, offers international ESL
courses to provide teachers from school boards
in the Niagara and Hamilton/Wentworth
regions with an intensive, hands-on
professional development and cultural
experience, as well as an ESL qualification to
broaden their teaching expertise at home and
abroad. This special course starts at the
Hamilton campus of Brock University and
finishes in China. Every year, more than 60
students participate in the program and teach
in local schools in three Chinese provinces.
The program was founded and began eight
years ago by Don Dworet, Associate Professor
of Education. More than 400 teachers have
benefited from this exciting Chinese training
