The involvement of the IMF and World Bank in Africa Many developing nations are in debt and poverty partly due to the policies of international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. Their programs have been heavily criticized for many years for resulting in poverty. In addition, for developing or third world countries, there has been an increased dependency on the richer nations. (Structural Adjustment – A Major Cause of Poverty by Anup Shah http://www.globalissues.org/article/3/structural -adjustment-a-major-cause-poverty) The International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Africa: A ’disastrous’ record This year marks the 60th anniversary of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Through their propaganda machines, both institutions will attempt to highlight their ‘assistance’ to Africa. But in reality, since the 1970s these institutions have gradually become the chief architects of policies, known as ‘the Washington Consensus’, which are responsible for the worst inequalities and the explosion of poverty in the world, especially in Africa.
