MARKET PREVIEW
US: U.S. stocks fell broadly on Wednesday extending losses
from one day earlier, as Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen
warned of the potential dangers from high stock valuations in
equities markets.
Asia: Asian stocks fell, with the regional benchmark index
heading for a one-month low, following declines in U.S. equities
and as shares resumed trading in Tokyo after a three-day
holiday.
India: The Indian equity market witnessed a perpendicular fall
in yesterday’s trade. Crude oil continued to rise and is at its
2015 peak, raising concerns about the trade deficits and
currency. This will impact India Inc performance. All the
sectoral indices were hit badly to close below their respective
support levels. Bankex and Capital Goods tanked more than
700 points each. Auto and Healthcare indices also witnessed a
fall around 500 points. While Mid-Caps and Small-Caps also
sapped their outperformance and fell by more than 350 points
each. The Nifty closed below its 200 day EMA level, fell by 227
points and closed at 8097 while Sensex was down by 722 points
and closed at 26717. Market is expected to open on a negative
note and likely to remain under pressure during the day.
Economy: European lenders on Wednesday dashed Greece's
hopes for a quick cash-for-reforms deal in the coming days,
leaving Athens in an increasingly desperate financial position
ahead of a major debt payment next week.
Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen on Wednesday said high
equity valuations could pose potential dangers but that stability
risks across the U.S. financial system remained in check.
The European Union's foreign policy chief said that she was
confident Britain would remain within the bloc as it was in the
interests of both the EU and Britain, which goes to the polls on
Thursday.
Commodities: Crude oil prices fell in Asia on Thursday as
investors took profits on overnight gains in a market that
remains oversupplied.
Gold prices held nearly steady to a tad weaker on Thursday in
early Asia with overnight comments by Fed Chair Janet Yellen
overhanging the commodity as investors again tried to estimate
what they may mean for the timing of a widely expected rate
hike this year.
Currency: The U.S. dollar declined against its Canadian
counterpart on Wednesday, reapproaching a nore than threemonth low as data showing that U.S. non-farm private
employment rose less than expected in April fuelled concerns
over the strength of the U.S. labor market.
