It has been a spectacular year – starting with the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival where we won the Auckland and National Competition. Last week our two choirs competing in Kids Sing – the Chapel Choir (Junior School) and Virtuoso Voce (Year 7 and 8) both won elite Gold Awards at the Auckland Town Hall. Following on from this, our St Cecilia Singers won Gold at the Big Sing Competition and are competing in the National Big Sing Regional Finale in Dunedin this weekend. Over the last weekend, the Diocesan Chamber Orchestra achieved Gold and the Dio Symphony Orchestra was awarded a Silver award at the highly competitive KBB Orchestral Music Competition. The Chamber Orchestra progressed through to the National Finals for Chamber Music NZ. Diocesan is clearly achieving at the top in so many areas of the Arts. We are delighted to announce that we are about to embark on the final stages of that plan which includes the development of an Arts Centre. The Aquatic Centre, Turf and especially the underground car park projects were all part of the strategy and were organised carefully as enabling projects for us to seek resource consent for the Arts Centre. We have been engaged in initial concept designs and a full consultation process with teachers, stakeholders and expert consultants to prepare designs and to examine how the project can be staged over time to maximise teaching and learning. The first project will involve the construction of teaching/practice rooms and smaller performance areas followed by the building of a very large auditorium that will be able to accommodate the whole school. Facilities will include: a visual art gallery, dance studios, recording studios, orchestral performance areas, drama rooms, green room, changing and makeup rooms, huge storage and black box performance areas. It will be fantastic to host our senior prize giving, community events, school productions and world-class artists at our school. We are delighted to announce that we will continue to implement this project and will begin the resource consent process which we anticipate will take some time. We are very excited about the concept drawings that are still in various stages of development. We will make these available for viewing once we have refined and finalised them. The Arts Centre will be in front of the current Science Block and will stretch back towards the Chapel and be a very visible building from Clyde Street. The project will take a number of years to complete and will depend on available funding. We are working on a start date and will make further announcements in due course. Women2Watch Assembly On Monday 26 August, we were delighted to host the friends and families of two outstanding Diocesan Old Girls. The Women2Watch awards are awarded to high achieving women under the age of 35. Attending Diocesan for her final years of school, Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh is an accomplished musician and composer who has delighted audiences with her dynamic symphony. Annie’s works have been performed by leading musicians and ensembles in Australia and abroad. Her works have featured in numerous festivals and she was recently selected as a composition fellow at The Arts of Migration Festival (UC Davis, USA). The second award was presented to Kimberley Crossman, actress and dancer. Kimberley was a star when she appeared as a regular on Shortland Street and has appeared in numerous television programmes and films. Most recently she has appeared on NCIS - LA and is currently living in Los Angeles and attending comedic acting school. Kimberley is aiming to extend her already extensive career in film. Congratulations Annie and Kimberley for your great advice to our girls about following your dreams and being more than you ever imagined. The assembly was hosted by Jane Latimer with beautiful musical performances by the Diocesan Orchestra. Thank you to the Women2Watch team who plan and organise this event annually. Be more than you ever imagined 2 Issue 25 | 30 August 2013 Issue 25 | 30 August 2013 3 On Friday last week, we were delighted to host the patron of the Centre for Ethics, The Right Honourable Chief Justice Dame Sian Elias, to our Ethic’s Dinner. Guest speakers included Principal Youth Court Judge Andrew Becroft and the Very Reverend Dean Jo Kelly-Moore. The sumptuous dinner was excellent and wellknown journalist Rod Oram, was an outstanding MC. Judge Becroft discussed issues for the youth court and trends that he was noticing during his experiences with young youth offenders. Jo-Kelly Moore discussed the Christian perspective and challenges for youth today. Students Lily McLean and Amelia Retter joined Reverend Jo and Judge Becroft in a forum responding to questions posed from the audience. The evening was rivetingly interesting and engaging. Special thanks to our Centre for Ethics Director Catherine Syms and the Ethics Committee for their dedication and commitment to delivering an evening of challenging thoughts and discussion. The evening was everything we imagined in examining ethical issues. Best wishes Heather McRae Principal Information for Parents Diocesan Shop – summer uniform The summer uniform is currently available from the Diocesan Shop. Be more than you ever imagined Ethics and Youth in New Zealand 4 Issue 25 | 30 August 2013 Throughout the Western World there is now widespread acknowledgment of the high levels of stress and anxiety experienced by school students of all ages; over timetabling, social media and the pressure to succeed contributing to these record high levels of stress. The .b Mindfulness in Schools programme is designed not only to give students practical strategies to deal with difficult issues but also to help them flourish and succeed in their academic, sporting and cultural endeavours. The programme was developed by experienced classroom and mindfulness teachers at two of the UK’s leading independent schools, and Diocesan is the first independent school in New Zealand to offer the programme to their students. The programme is currently run as an optional course of eight 40 minute classroom lessons. The course is taught using animated slides, video clips and practical mindfulness exercises by Dr Nick Penney PhD, an experienced mindfulness teacher who is currently the only .b certified teacher in New Zealand. A free introductory information session will be held on Tuesday 3 September at 3:30pm in the Junior School Hall. The session is open to all interested students and parents, with the next .b course to start in Week 1 of Term 4. Further information is available is available at www.mindfulnessinschools.org or on Dr Penney’s web site www. mbsr.co.nz or please call Vaisi at Integrative Pain Care in Remuera on 522 9240. Brett Lee’s presentation on internet safety A number of you were at Brett’s presentation on Monday night – thank you for your support. For those who weren’t and would like to see the presentation – it is now on the Dio Portal. Brett’s presentation, in my opinion, is outstanding. If you’ve got children, or know anyone who has, then his messages will be of value. Brett’s complete presentation is long – around 100 minutes in total. So, watch it over time and enjoy it. There is also a four page handout that Brett has made available and this too might be of value for many.
