Dear Parents
Supporting Dio Sport – The Ultimate
After Match
Throughout the year, a team of enthusiastic
volunteers raises funds to support a range of
sporting activities at Diocesan. Dio Sport is chaired
by Jenny Cade and amongst other things they
contribute to girls who achieve elite sporting status. They also provide great
support for our codes in many ways and are soon to host a major event. Dio Sport’s goals are to support our athletes and develop sport in general
at Diocesan. We encourage you all to participate in this fun night - The
Ultimate After Match - which will be hosted by James McOnie from Prime
TV’s The Crowd Goes Wild. The Dio Sports News will be presented by the illustrious sports
commentator, Hamish MacKay, and we will profile some of our new sports
uniforms. This will be great entertainment for a casual night out with silent
auction and clubroom games challenge. We look forward to seeing you at

KBB and Big Sing success for Diocesan Choirs, Orchestra
and Symphony
This year is a great year for the Arts at Diocesan. It has been a spectacular
year – starting with the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival where we won
the Auckland and National Competition.
Last week our two choirs competing in Kids Sing – the Chapel Choir (Junior
School) and Virtuoso Voce (Year 7 and 8) both won elite Gold Awards at the
Auckland Town Hall. Following on from this, our St Cecilia Singers won Gold
at the Big Sing Competition and are competing in the National Big Sing
Regional Finale in Dunedin this weekend. Over the last weekend, the Diocesan Chamber Orchestra achieved Gold
and the Dio Symphony Orchestra was awarded a Silver award at the highly
competitive KBB Orchestral Music Competition. The Chamber Orchestra
progressed through to the National Finals for Chamber Music NZ. Diocesan
is clearly achieving at the top in so many areas of the Arts. Our Concert
Band and Jazz Bands also received commendation and participation
awards. •Gold at KBB Festival

We are also generating a great deal of outside interest and next Friday our Chamber Orchestra will be guest
performers at Alberton at a high profile function, in the company of dignitaries and the Prime Minister,
John Key. This is great publicity for the School. John Eady has also asked our musicians to perform at his
showrooms. Here are some of our performances for you to enjoy. Congratulations to Shelagh Thomson, Director of the
Performing Arts and Andre Worsnop, Head of the Arts Faculty and his team. We are very proud of the huge
amount of practice and effort that girls have contributed to these excellent achievements. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l83vRdRXVfA

The Arts Centre – A dream turning to reality
Over recent years, Diocesan School for Girls’ Board, School and community have been working to achieve
the 10-year Master Plan designed to provide a world-class campus to support excellence in education. We
are delighted to announce that we are about to embark on the final stages of that plan which includes the
development of an Arts Centre.
The Aquatic Centre, Turf and especially the underground car park projects were all part of the strategy and
were organised carefully as enabling projects for us to seek resource consent for the Arts Centre. We have
been engaged in initial concept designs and a full consultation process with teachers, stakeholders and expert
consultants to prepare designs and to examine how the project can be staged over time to maximise teaching
and learning.
The first project will involve the construction of teaching/practice rooms and smaller performance areas
followed by the building of a very large auditorium that will be able to accommodate the whole school. Facilities will include: a visual art gallery, dance studios, recording studios, orchestral performance areas, drama
rooms, green room, changing and makeup rooms, huge storage and black box performance areas. It will be
fantastic to host our senior prize giving, community events, school productions and world-class artists at our
school.
We are delighted to announce that we will continue to implement this project and will begin the resource
consent process which we anticipate will take some time. We are very excited about the concept drawings
that are still in various stages of development. We will make these available for viewing once we have refined
and finalised them.
The Arts Centre will be in front of the current Science Block and will stretch back towards the Chapel and be a
very visible building from Clyde Street. The project will take a number of years to complete and will depend on
available funding. We are working on a start date and will make further announcements in due course. Women2Watch Assembly
On Monday 26 August, we were delighted to host the
friends and families of two outstanding Diocesan Old Girls. The Women2Watch awards are awarded to high achieving
women under the age of 35. Attending Diocesan for her final
years of school, Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh is an accomplished
musician and composer who has delighted audiences with
her dynamic symphony. Annie’s works have been performed
by leading musicians and ensembles in Australia and abroad. Her works have featured in numerous festivals and she was
recently selected as a composition fellow at The Arts of
Migration Festival (UC Davis, USA).
The second award was presented to Kimberley Crossman,
actress and dancer. Kimberley was a star when she appeared
as a regular on Shortland Street and has appeared in
numerous television programmes and films. Most recently
she has appeared on NCIS - LA and is currently living in Los
Angeles and attending comedic acting school. Kimberley is
aiming to extend her already extensive career in film. Congratulations Annie and Kimberley for your great advice
to our girls about following your dreams and being more
than you ever imagined. The assembly was hosted by Jane
Latimer with beautiful musical performances by the Diocesan
Orchestra. Thank you to the Women2Watch team who plan
and organise this event annually.

On Friday last week, we were delighted to host the patron of the Centre for Ethics, The Right Honourable
Chief Justice Dame Sian Elias, to our Ethic’s Dinner. Guest speakers included Principal Youth Court Judge
Andrew Becroft and the Very Reverend Dean Jo Kelly-Moore. The sumptuous dinner was excellent and wellknown journalist Rod Oram, was an outstanding MC. Judge Becroft discussed issues for the youth court and
trends that he was noticing during his experiences with young youth offenders. Jo-Kelly Moore discussed
the Christian perspective and challenges for youth today. Students Lily McLean and Amelia Retter joined
Reverend Jo and Judge Becroft in a forum responding to questions posed from the audience. The evening was
rivetingly interesting and engaging. Special thanks to our Centre for Ethics Director Catherine Syms and the
Ethics Committee for their dedication and commitment to delivering an evening of challenging thoughts and
discussion. The evening was everything we imagined in examining ethical issues.
Best wishes

Issue 25 | 30 August 2013
Throughout the Western World there is now widespread acknowledgment of the high levels of stress and
anxiety experienced by school students of all ages; over timetabling, social media and the pressure to succeed
contributing to these record high levels of stress.
The .b Mindfulness in Schools programme is designed not only to give students practical strategies to deal with
difficult issues but also to help them flourish and succeed in their academic, sporting and cultural endeavours.
The programme was developed by experienced classroom and mindfulness teachers at two of the UK’s leading
independent schools, and Diocesan is the first independent school in New Zealand to offer the programme to
their students.
The programme is currently run as an optional course of eight 40 minute classroom lessons. The course
is taught using animated slides, video clips and practical mindfulness exercises by Dr Nick Penney PhD, an
experienced mindfulness teacher who is currently the only .b certified teacher in New Zealand.
A free introductory information session will be held on Tuesday 3 September at 3:30pm in the Junior School
Hall. The session is open to all interested students and parents, with the next .b course to start in Week 1 of
Term 4.
Further information is available is available at www.mindfulnessinschools.org or on Dr Penney’s web site www.
mbsr.co.nz or please call Vaisi at Integrative Pain Care in Remuera on 522 9240.
Brett Lee’s presentation on internet safety
A number of you were at Brett’s presentation on Monday night – thank you for your support. For those who
weren’t and would like to see the presentation – it is now on the Dio Portal.
Brett’s presentation, in my opinion, is outstanding. If you’ve got children, or know anyone who has, then his
messages will be of value.
Brett’s complete presentation is long – around 100 minutes in total. So, watch it over time and enjoy it.
There is also a four page handout that Brett has made available and this too might be of value for many.

Gold at KBB Festival
Congratulations! The outstanding success of Chamber Orchestra last weekend has created a buzz around the
music scene in the Auckland region.
This is the biggest ‘Large Ensemble’ Competition in the country – the Awards ceremony at the Town Hall was
packed at the weekend. The standard of the top performing groups was staggeringly impressive – from Jazz
Bands, Concert Bands, Symphony Orchestras to Chamber Orchestras.
For a small school we have seriously punched above our weight and those in the music world have noticed and
commented. All great publicity for our Dio community!
Thank you to all who have supported the 100 girls who have been seriously involved in the KBB Festival over

It was great for our community to receive the very positive email about the new Performing Arts Centre –
so exciting! After Ms McRae’s official announcement the other day, it seems we are really generating some
momentum with our continuing success at national and regional level this year.
This is clear evidence that Dio is achieving success in so many areas of the Arts – and the high profile that
accompanies these achievements is great for Dio and its students.
Andre Worsnop is doing a fantastic job with our Facebook page and the You Tube channel - he posts up links
‘hot off the press’ and this is great publicity for the School.
Big Sing Finale 2013
Our St Cecilia Singers choir is competing over three days in the Big Sing Finale.
They have travelled to the cold South - to Dunedin - for this very exciting and prestigious event.
We wish them all the very best!
Anyone can watch the performance live from the Big Sing on their computer, tablet or internet capable phone. Here is the link to send far and wide - http://www.r2.co.nz/20130829/
Please circulate this link as widely as possible, to people in as many countries as possible. The more views we
have of the live coverage, the more chance there is of obtaining the funding received for this service in the
future.
This year we are streaming in HD. Please be aware that due to R2 travelling from Wellington for The Big Sing, it
will take a few days to upload the performances for you to replay/view your recitals from the R2 site.

University Applications
If your daughter has applied to a university outside Auckland, have they also applied for a university in
Auckland? When they receive their results in January and then are thinking, “So what do I want to do?”
and “Where do I want to do it?”, if they have only applied to one university they will not have the option of
considering something else. They can’t apply for a university place after they receive their results.

In this entertaining evening which spans 13 billion years and travels the lengths of the globe you’ll learn all kinds
of amazing things about where families come from, how we got to this stage, and what the future might hold.
It’s a complex and fraught issue trying to go from one family, to a new and different shaped one with different
players and the blending of different histories and ideas about how things should be done. Nigel presents an
evening of evidence-based opinion and simplifying common sense. Just because the problem is complicated,
doesn’t mean that the solution has to be.
