The October SkyRidge LED Encounter LED Connection 2013 3 WaveStream LED Series TM SkyRidge and Encounter TM TM Telecommunications Grounding & Bonding in the Telecommunications Room & Beyond The largest portion of grounding and bonding for telecommunications installers typically occurs in the Telecommunications Room (TR, aka closet). There are a number of industry standards that help guide installers by recommending best practices for installing a telecommunications grounding and bonding system that is reliable, standards compliant, and professional in appearance such as the ANSI/TIA-607-B, NECA/BICSI-607, and design manuals like the BICSI Telecommunications Distribution Methods Manual (TDMM). By: Gary Marret - Telcom Data Specialist - Fort Wayne The purpose of these systems is specific for each and cannot be used in place of the other. This article will be specific to the Telecommunications Bonding Infrastructure. Telecommunications Bonding Infrastructure The ANSI/TIA-607-B specifies requirements for a generic telecommunications bonding and grounding infrastructure, and its interconnection to other systems, for locations where telecommunications equipment will The NFPA 70 (National Fire Protection Associabe or are installed. The purpose (TBB) and its connections to busbars, known as the Telecommunications Main of the NEC is the practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the Grounding Busbar (TMGB) and the Telecommunications Grounding Busbar (TGB), use of electricity. The code contains provisions but also extends out from the busbars that are necessary for safety. Standards are in and through the racks right down to the IT place to insure quality of installation and consistency whereas the codes (NEC) are required for equipment itself in both Telecommunication Rooms (TR) and computer/server rooms. the safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity. There is a technical difference between “grounding” and “bonding.” The NEC defines “grounding” as being connected to ground or to a conductive body that extends the ground connection. Ground connections take place at the electrical entrance facility and power sources such as transformers. The rest of the system is actually “bonding”. The grounding wire inside of electrical plugs is part of the bonding system. So are the conduits and jumper wires that are used to connect equipment and structures together. Anytime a connection is made to establish electrical contiThe purpose of the telecommunications nuity, the connection is a “bonding” connection. grounding system is to create a low impedance path to earth ground for electrical Grounding Systems surges and transient voltages. They are functioning system that provides protection the Grounding Electrode System, Equipment Grounding System, and the Telecommunications for personnel and equipment. Bonding Infrastructure. The purpose of the TBB is to reduce or equalize potential differences between telecommunications spaces. The TBB originates at the TMGB and extends continuously throughout the building using the telecommunications pathways. The TBB should be built first and then bonded to the TGB that is present in each TR. The TMGB must be bonded to the building steel and the AC service entrance ground busbar that is bonded to the GES to earth ground. The ANSI/TIA-607-B states that the TBB shall be a continuous minimum number 6 AWG and up to a maximum size of 750 kcmil depending on distance. NECA/BICSI-607 requires two-hole compression lugs when connecting to the TGB and recommend using a compression HTAP when connecting the TGB with a jumper to the TBB. One-hole lugs can twist if bumped causing the bolted connection to loosen. Anti-oxidants should always be applied to mating surfaces. Each TGB should be bonded to the building steel and all metallic raceways bonded to the TGB. Continued on next page... The October Connection 2013 4 RAB Introduces ENTRA LED Doorway Lighting Telecommunications Room Bonding Once all the bonds from the TGB to the building steel, raceways, and TBB have been made, the TR is ready to have the racks and cabinets bonded to the TGB. When electronic equipment such as switches, routers, and other IT equipment are mounted on the rack, they should be bonded with a jumper from their lug ground pad to the rack with a two-hole lug. If the equipment does not have a ground pad, the next best option is to bond the equipment rack ears directly to the rack using the Panduit bonding screws above. When assembling the racks, verify that you have electrical continuity between all structure materials. Some manufacturers provide paint piercing washers with their racks so that the powder coated parts are bonded together when assembled. If paint piercing washers • are not provided, grind any paint off that may prevent continuity when assembling the racks. Anti-oxidants should always be applied to mating surfaces. Different options exist on how to bond racks to the TGB. It depends on the size and configuration of the installation. You can run the Telecommunications Equipment Bonding Conductor (TEBC) directly from each rack to the TGB for smaller installations. For larger installations you should run a continuous TEBC from the TGB down each row of racks making a bond from the TEBC to each rack utilizing a compression style HTAP. • • • • Inspecting The Telecommunications Bonding System Do a complete visual inspection of the bonding system. Verify you have physical continuity throughout the system starting at the Electrical Service entrance panel to the TMGB, TMGB to each TGB, and each TGB to its racks, metallic raceways, and building steel. Verify two-hole compression lugs are used on racks and busbars. Confirm that the equipment is bonded to the racks. Perform two-point resistance measurements between surfaces where bonds are desired. You should have less than 0.1 ohms. Check for excessive currents on the conductors bonded to the TMGB and TGB with a clamp on ammeter at the busbar. You should have less than 1 amp with AC currents and less than .5 amps with DC currents. The conductors used in bonding the racks to the TGB should be insulated with a green jacket to indicate that they are being used for grounding purposes. In most TRs the use of #6 AWG TEBC is sufficient due to the limited length required within the closet space. Mechanical connectors are allowed for bonding the TEBC to racks, but compression lugs are recommended to prevent loosening. Always use thread forming screws to pierce the paint in the treaded holes or scrape any paint off the rack to complete the connection. Anti-oxidants should always be applied to mating surfaces. BlueWave Security is most commonly used in retail, commercial, government, healthcare and institutional entities. This product can be used in multiple sites, with an unlimited amount of access points and users. The April issue of the Connection introduced BlueWave technology and how it is typically used. In this issue we will be looking at some new applications using the same technology. I was recently asked by a maintenance manager, “Do you have something that I can use to tell me who opens my control cabinet doors in this facility? I want to know who they are, what time they were in the cabinet, and when they left.” This is not the first time I have been asked this question. Industrial plants have many skilled workers, all of who have different levels of expertise. For instance, once trained, a machine operator may be allowed to reset an overload or reset a fault in a cabinet, an engineer may be given permission to make programming changes, or an electrician to replace a failed component. Sometimes, a person may try to do more than what they have been trained to do, all with good intentions, but this often leads to issues which could take even longer to resolve. In an effort to reduce the amount of downtime and to track the time to repair, these types of issues can be measured and used in order to help improve troubleshooting techniques and procedures. Have you ever thought of BlueWave Security as your solution to provide this feedback from the factory floor? We often think of access control for applications such as turnstiles and doors for secure locations. With BlueWave Security, we now have a great solution for your control cabinets! BlueWave Security can also use the same proven technology in industrial applications for access control. These components connect to a small controller and then can be networked over the plant network. Or if you prefer, you can install your own local network connected to a central computer. You can then gather the information to track activity in and out of the cabinets. This information can also be matched with downtime events within the facility, if desired. Continued on next page... A second application we are exploring is using this technology to aid with the issue of more expensive test equipment or tools such as vibration monitoring equipment, IR test equipment, and scope-meters. The technology could be used with a cabinet that has individual compartments with secure doors storing each piece of equipment, similar to a locker. The ability to use the same equipment as in the previous application in conjunction with a camera makes it possible to identify who is checking out a piece of equipment along with the ability to record the time. We are investigating a method either using a key or RFid tag attached to each tool to track the tool return inside the compartment. At this time, we are still exploring this application, but it looks promising. From traditional access control using turnstiles and doors to monitoring access in control cabinets or managing tool and equipment assets, BlueWave Security can accommodate your needs. The October Connection 2013 7 Lutron Wireless Occupancy Sensors By: Kevin Feltner Account Manager Benton Harbor More than likely, you have looked at energy saving ideas of one kind or another. One thing you might not know about yet is the Lutron wireless occupancy sensors. Lutron has a line of in-wall sensors that you can use to replace your ordinary wall switch. One of their newest products is the wireless occupancy sensor. If you want to put in a ceiling mounted sensor but don't want to run the wires to it, this is an option you should consider. You can have your sensor installed in the time it takes to change out a wall switch and put a couple of screws in the ceiling. The Radio Power SavrTM has ceiling mount and wall mount style sensors. Both sensors can be used with the Lutron switch or dimmer if you still would like to have lighting level control in, for example, a conference room or class room. The ceiling sensors can cover up to a 26' x 26' area on a 12' high ceiling. The wall sensor can cover a 30' x 50' area at just a 7' mount height. The October Connection 2013 9 Fiber Optic Choices & Systems Selection Today, fiber optic cable is widely used in data transmission due to its many advantages over copper cable. Fiber optic cable consists of a glass core that transmits photons instead of electrons. Optical attenuation is much lower than the attenuation of electrical signals. Fiber optic transmissions do not radiate RFI and are not susceptible to interference from other electrical forces. For these reasons, fiber optic cable is the most sensible choice for secure communications. There are several choices when selecting a Fiber Optic cable for data network connectivity. The selection process boils down to three main factors: • Desired rate of data transmission • Distance the data needs to travel over the fiber optic cable • Installation environment By: Kirk Ritter - Datacom Specialist - Muskegon Multi-mode fiber optic cables are categorized by “OM” ratings (optical multi-mode.) OM1 62.5/125 (core/cladding dimensions) fiber and OM2 50/125 are the oldest type of multi-mode fiber used widely in the past years in premise applications inside of buildings for short economical connections. OM1 and OM2 fiber optic cable support data rates from 10 Mbit/s to Gigabit Ethernet. OM3 50/125 laser-optimized mulit-mode fiber is capable of data rates up to 10 Gig Ethernet for approximately 300 meters. At the top of the multi-mode cables is OM4 50/125. OM4 laser-optimized fiber is capable of 10 Gig Ethernet up to 550 meters. Indoor applications in less hostile environments not subject to outdoor elements, are typically manufactured using a tight buffering process. This 900-micron buffer is a plastic coating directly applied to the core/cladding of the fiber optic cable. This strengthens the fiber and makes it much easier to connectorize. This coating, however, does not provide protection from water migration and does not isolate the fiber optic cable from the expansion and contraction of other materials and temperature changes. Tight Buffered cables are often called Premise or Distribution cables and are suited for indoor installations. This Chart represents the International Standard ISO/IEC 11801 for Transmission Standards of OM fiber Optic cable: LAN (Local Area Network) fiber optic systems typically operate using multi-mode fiber. Multi-mode systems are less expensive than single-mode systems due to multi-mode fiber using less expensive LED or VCSEL (vertical cavity surface emitting laser) light sources making the transmission electronics much less expensive. WAN (Wide Area Network) fiber optic systems typically operate using single-mode fiber. Single-mode systems require the use of laser light sources in the electronics, making the cost of the single-mode system more expensive even though single-mode fiber optic cable is typically less expensive than multi-mode fiber. Do you also need to perform inspections that a color sensor can’t? Try the Cognex In-Sight IS7010C And for a limited time save with this special offer. Single-mode fiber optic cable is classified by the ISO/IEC as OS1 and OS2. These standards do not reflect data transmission speeds but rather their attenuation characteristics. OS1 is to have a maximum attenuation of 1db/km . OS1 is used in office premises not exceeding 2000m. OS2 is used to support transmission distances of 5000m to 10k. It has attenuation of 0,4 db/km. Single-mode fiber has a higher transmission rate and much higher distance capabilities than multi-mode. Singlemode fiber has a much smaller core than multi-mode. The small core and single lightwave eliminate most of the distortion that could result from overlapping light pulses, providing the least signal attenuation and the highest transmission speeds of any fiber cable type. Single-mode distances can reach up to 100km. In some cases, the installation of a fiber optic cable will need to run from the inside of one building and then outside, in order to enter and run inside another building. A few years ago, this installation would require two indoor cables spliced onto the outdoor cable at each building entrance. Today the design and materials have evolved to meet the needs of “Indoor/Outdoor” applications with several cable choices. There are now riser and plenum rated loose-tube, gel-filled cables that offer outdoor protection. The riser and plenum ratings allow these cables to be ran inside of the buildings. Indoor and outdoor cables can also be ordered with a metallic armor encasing the cable. This armor protects the cable from rodents underground and physical impact damage inside of industrial environments. The armor also acts as a barrier to protect the bend radius limits of the fiber optic cable. Connectorizing fiber optic cable is another story. I will save that for another article. Once the desired data rate has been selected and the distance of the transmission is known, the core of the fiber optic cable can be selected. At this point, careful consideration has to complete bundle is available to you at a Please contact your Kendall Electric Account be taken to select the correct physical protecspecial discount for a limited time only. The IPLCD player lets you communicate realtime information when you don’t need LEDs superior viewing distances. It works with any standard Plasma or LCD TV or LCD Monitor that supports either HDMI or DVI-D (with adaptor) input at 720P resolution. These smart LED signs can intelligently pull information from a multitude of sources, or receive information pushed to them, to display anything from production data to productivity results or safety information. IP Displays uses Internet Protocols (IP) and Web services to communicate and collect information needed to populate the signs with dynamic, real-time data. Features Include: •No middleware or server needed •Get data from PLC’s or machines •Get data from SQL server, Access, or other databases •Get data from Excel •Quick implementation Each unit has its own microprocessor with a RJ45 connector. When you power the unit up, it will display its model number and generate an IP address that you simply put into your web browser and connect to the unit via an Ethernet cable. The software and screen configuration data resides on the unit itself. After you have finished your communication, you then go to the settings tab and turn off the DCHP option and setup a static IP address or configure your network settings. You can then start creating different screens and different fields within those screens to populate data. You can set the order the screens display in and the duration that each screen appears, along with font size, color, scroll options, enter and exit options, etc. The units come with some standard graphical industrial bitmap images that can be used. Some examples are: a stop sign, fork lift, pallet, and caution signs. You can also create your own bitmap images and save them. The first step in managing energy is understanding how much energy is used and when it’s used. To discover how much and when energy is used, you need a power logger. The logger captures voltage, current, power, power factor and energy, displays the measurements, and in logging mode stores them over time. Then, using software, you can graph the measurements and highlight times when extreme or unexpected energy consumption is happening. For example, if energy is being consumed at night or on weekends, the HVAC system may need to be re-programmed. Once you have this kind of power and energy profile, you can highlight potential areas for energy savings. The new Fluke 1730 Three-Phase Electrical Energy Logger introduces a new simplicity to discovering sources of electrical energy waste. Discover when and where energy in your facility is being consumed; from the service entrance to individual circuits. Profiling energy usage across your facility helps you identify opportunities for energy savings and provides you with the data you need to take action. The new Energy Analyze software package allows you to compare multiple data points over time to build a complete picture of energy usage, which is the first step to reduce to cost of your energy bill. When a piece of equipment is operated, it instantaneously consumes a specific amount of power in watts or kilowatts. This power is accumulated over the operating time and expressed as energy consumed in kilowatt hours. Energy is what your electric utility charges for; there will be a standard charge from the utility per kilowatt hour. Utilities may have other additional charges, such as peak demand over a defined period of time, often 15 or 30 minutes. There may also be power factor charges, which are based on the effects of inductive or capacitive loads in the facility. Optimizing peak demand and power factor often results in lower monthly electricity bills. The 1730 Three Phase Electrical Energy Logger has the capability to measure then characterize these effects enabling you to analyze the results and save money. In order to determine the type of energy survey you need for your plant, you’ll first need to determine what will be most effective. For instance, if your manufacturing floor operates 24-hours a day, for five days a week, with two days of downtime, it might be most effective to perform an analysis over a 7-day period. If your manufacturing facility operates 24/7, you may only require a one-day analysis, as long as there are no prolonged periods of scheduled maintenance. Granted, we have written our share of fluorescent hi-bay projects. (Many are T5HO, some are T8). In fact, I’m working on an industrial project now where we are able to replace 250MH with 6-lamp FO32T8. With this project, light levels will climb from 10FC to more than 30FC. Replacing outdated HID (MH, HPS) systems have been the low hanging fruit everyone has been chasing. Now what? Many facilities aged 10+ years still contain countless old generation fluorescent T12 fixtures. The best solution may be T8. -Fluorescent hibays (typically 24’-28’ mounting height or less) -Recessed layins in the offices, training and conference rooms -Strips and industrials in the plant, warehouse and storeroom -Task lighting Did you know as much as 90% of Sylvania’s linear fluorescent lamps are manufactured in the USA? (Versailles, Kentucky) The US mandated out fluorescent T12 lamps (7/12) and related magnetic ballasts (7/10), yet today many facilities continue to purchase what little T12 supply is available. As the T8 lamp technology (performance + life) improves, it’s costing you more and more not to convert. Now is the time. Energy Efficiency is a huge reason to convert. As much as 82% of the total cost to maintain a lighting system is energy. What about the Cost of Maintenance? The dollars may be less, yet this may be your biggest challenge. Fixtures in hard-to-access locations may require scaffolding and/or shutting down a complete process to maintain the lighting. Long-life lamps and ballasts will earn their keep. With Fluorescent T8 in mind, why not get the most bang for your buck? The up-front cost may be an additional 30%, 40% or 50% for the extended lamp life, but when considering they have twice the lamp life, it’s a worthwhile conversion to begin. StratixTM 5900 By: Don McSween - Account Manager - Grand Rapids As Ethernet continues to evolve as the main industrial network, security concerns over protecting the plant floor network from unwanted influences and sometimes intentionally destructive programs have caused manufacturers to research for safeguard measures. Rockwell Automation® and Cisco® have been collaborating for years on Ethernet managed switches – and now have developed an industrial firewall which provides unified threat management. The Stratix 5900 UTM (Unified Threat Management) security appliance is a ruggedized all-inclusive UTM with features such as firewall, secure routing, virtual private network (VPN), intrusion prevention, network address translation (NAT) and content filtering. The firewall services can provide segmentation and isolation to create a barrier between plant floor and office environments or to create a barrier from cell to cell. This barrier protection is a rugged demilitarized zone (DMZ) that will prevent intrusion and yet allow for a dynamic multipoint VPN for OEMs to be able to communicate with their equipment out at an end manufacturing site. The device allows for the remote access to occur with encryption and data integrity over a secure channel. The StratixTM 5900 also allows for traffic logging and event or historical memory…..trends are recorded as behavior enforcement and application intelligence/awareness are easily configured within the windows based programming software. The hardened device built for challenging environments can withstand shock/vibration, humidity, splashing water, temperature, and dust.
