5.6B Circuits and Electricity Student Expectation The student is expected to demonstrate that the flow of electricity in circuits requires a complete path through which an electric current can pass and can produce light, heat, and sound. Essential Questions that students will be asked How does electricity travel? Electricity can be transformed into which other forms of energy? What is necessary to have energy flow through a circuit? What happens if some parts of the circuit are missing? Key Concepts that need to be understood to answer essential questions Electricity flows in a closed path to form a circuit and stops when the circuit is broken. We can demonstrate that electricity can produce light, heat, and sound when flowing through a circuit. Many everyday devices use electricity to produce light, heat, and sound. Give some examples of how we use electricity. 2) How do you think electricity travels through wires? 3) How does it produce other kinds of energy like light, heat, and sound? 4) Explain and describe how an electrical current flows throw a circuit. Included when the circuit is complete and incomplete. 5) What is a generator? How does this work? Draw a picture of at least two type of generators. Label the parts 6) How does a battery work? Find and draw at least one type of battery. Label the parts 7) Do a double bubble for conductors and insulators- Give examples of both 8) Explain what a load or device portion of circuits does. Give three examples that you find at home, two examples from school, and one from your community. 9) What is the function of a switch? Paired Questions A What do you think Look at the images on page 27 and decided whether each would best be uses as a conductor, an insulator, or a load. Explain B Explain how you would test the strength of an electromagnet. Stretch Activity- Connecting with your Child- Do with a parent, guardian, or another adults Record the information that is requested in the directions. Draw and label any appropriate pictures. Included answers to the following questions. Where do you think the circuits are located in each device you listed? What would happen to a device if part of the circuit were missing or broken? What kind of information do you think an electrician needs to know in order to do his or her job?
