Baltic Fuel Company (BFC, St. Petersburg, Russia) has made a bargain on purchase of four river
tugs of the same type. Tugs of 2400 h.p. capacity each are intended for pushing vessels including oil
tankers used for transportation of over 60оС C oil products flash point. The price of the same class
vessel in the international market amounts to about 200 thousand euros. The first serial tug, onedeck twin-screw push boat EvroStar-2, has sailed to the Russian sea port of Rostov-on-Don and is
under registration procedure nowadays. Tugs will be transported from the ports of Rostov-on-Don

and Azov through the Russian Federation inland waterways to the port of St. Petersburg till the
end of this August. In St. Petersburg, the tugs will be equipped with drawbars, purchased by BFC
from Taisei Engineering Japanese Corporation, for making barge-tug connection apparatus.
General Director of BFC Stanislav Korneev: - This year our company has started to develop a new
business - transportation of oil products in Russian inland waterways. This February we placed the
order at the Baltiysky plant (St. Petersburg, Russia) for construction of four oil barges of 24000 c.m.
total capacity. During the construction, we decided to modernize the said barges in strict
complying with the requirements of such organizations as BP-Shipping. Nowadays Marine
Engineering Bureau (St. Petersburg, Russia) is finishing the modernization project. According to
Stanislav Korneev, barge-tug connection apparatus will start operating during 2012 navigation in
the Russian Federation inland waterways. Oil products will be delivered from the refineries of the
largest Russian oil companies to the Big Port of St. Petersburg. (Source: Shipbuilding & Energy)

At the moment we are not so
happy with the heading course.
The weather is getting worse and
worse. But to avoid the “pirates
territorial” waters we have no
other choice. Tomorrow we reach
a critical position so we have to
blindfold all the windows. This is
one of the safety measures we take
to become no target. This will last a
few days and then we are back in
safe waters. But bad weather gives
you also the opportunity to make
some spectacular pictures. On this picture you see the London, our neighbour for already 2
months, rocking the see. (Source: Marc Biemans o/b Singapore)

26 tugs on deck, carried the ENSCO 105 jack-up rig from Malta to Singapore. Willem Out,
Fairstar‟s Chief Operating Officer, said: "Fjord and Fjell crossed wakes around the Cape of Good

complex submerging and loading operations. I am relieved to report that our intense focus on
safety and safe practice resulted in an incident free quarter for our crews, ships and cargoes.” Chief
Executive Officer Philip Adkins stated: “In spite of achieving full utilization for our fleet, our
profitability for the quarter was marginal at best. The current price environment in the spot
market is intensely competitive. We are encouraged by the increase in tender activity for 'Red Box'

As reported in Shipfax,
McNally Construction has
been purchased by Weeks
Marine, Inc of New Jersey.
McNally will continue to
operate under its current
name as a wholly owned
subsidiary. As the largest
marine
construction
operation in eastern Canada
(Ocean Group is probably a
distant #2) McNally has a
substantial fleet of work
barges, scows, dredges and
about 20 tugs. There is
unlikely to be any outward change in the look of the fleet in the near future, but some of the older
plant is certainly due for replacement. One of McNally's hard working tugs is Mister Joe, built in
1964 by Russel-Hipwell in Owen Sound, ON as Churchill River. After a career in James Bay and
Hudson Bay, it worked on Hibernia for a time, before its acquisition of Beaver Marine (a McNally
subsidiary that was folded into the larger company) in 2000. The twin screw tug of 750 bhp is
named for Joe McNally, one of the company founders. Smaller tugs include Carl M, built in 1957 as
Louis M (renamed in 1975) and acquired from the now defunct McNamara Construction rates 475
bhp. Whitby (also a former McNamara tug) was built in 1978 and rates 474 bhp. (Source: TugFax;

The Groupe Océan tug
Océan A. Simard (ex

the job in Baie Comeau,
QC. After an extensive
refit at Industrie Océan
shipyard
in
Ile-auxCoudres, QC this spring,
the tug went to Quebec
City for a time, but in late
June it transferred to Baie
Comeau. That port is
home to the tug Pointe
Comeau, owned by the
Cargill Grain Co, but
operated under a long term contract with Svitzer. It is the only tug in Baie Comeau and serves
ships at Cargill's grain berths, Alcoa's import and export berths and Abitibi Bowater (although
most of that traffic is now handled by rail.) Pointe Comeau has apparently gone for a refit at the
Vérreault shipyard in Méchins, and Océan A. Simard has been brought in to substitute.
Interestingly both Océan A. Simard and Pointe Comeau are Voith Schneider tugs, so ship handling
will be carried out in the same way for the berthing masters. Océan A.Simard looks quite splendid
in its new Groupe Océan livery of blue hull and white house, with aqaua blue trim, which can
only be seen from certain angles. Pointe Comeau was built in 1976 by Marystown Shipyard and is
rated at 3500 bhp. Due to its age, it is very likely that it is undergoing a very thorough refit, which
may last several months. (Source: TugFax; Photo: Mac Mackay)

A crane toppled over a barge and
splashed into an inlet in Jamaica Bay
Monday, officials said. The top part of
the crane crashed down into Gerritsen
Inlet in Brooklyn just before 2 p.m. No
one was injured in the mishap, said Fire
Department officials and a Coast Guard
spokesman. The crane was on a barge
being pulled by a tugboat when it hit
the bridge and fell into Gerritsen Inlet.
The barge belongs to a company in the
dock construction business, Fire
Department sources said. It was not
immediately clear what was being done
with the crane at the time or what caused the splashdown. A private company was hired to clean
up about 10 gallons of fuel that spilled into the water, according to Coast Guard spokesman

ZONE
(ASTORIA, Ore.) -- The Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers are responding to stabilize a
runaway barge on the Columbia River. The 80- to 100-foot derelict barge broke away from its
mooring 3 miles downriver from the Dalles Dam at approximately 9:12 a.m., Sunday, and drifted
about 5 miles before grounding near mile marker 184 at 3 p.m. The barge was recently inspected
and was found to be free of any hazardous materials by Coast Guard personnel. It presents no
pollution threat, but does pose a potential threat to safe navigation on the Columbia River. Wasco
County Sherriff's Department reported the runaway barge to Coast Guard Sector Columbia River
in Astoria and monitored the vessel while Coast Guard personnel were dispatched to the scene. At
2 p.m., Sherriff's Department personnel reported the barge was aground but at risk of floating back
into the river. The barge broke free again at 8:45 p.m., Sunday, before grounding approximately 12
miles east of the Hood River Bridge near Lyle, Wash. Contractors arrived with a tug to secure the
barge at 11:32 p.m. Army Corps of Engineers and Coast Guard officials will assess the barge's
condition Monday morning before determining a safe location to secure it away from the
navigational channel. Coast Guard Sector Columbia River has instituted a Safety Zone around the
barge and directs all vessels transiting within a mile of the barge's location to contact the Coast
Guard for the latest safety information. (Source: USCG)

that this type of vessel problems
often reoccur. Thirty minutes
later the master reported that
the main engine failed again.
The tow was reconnected. The vessel is being towed to 70 nautical miles offshore and we await to
