battery. See Indicators on page 7 to
identify the charging status.
Using the scanner
9
Step 3: Inserting a memory card or connecting a USB
flash drive
Insert an unlocked (writable) memory card
into the memory card slot, or connect a USB
flash drive to the USB socket of the scanner.
NOTE:
• If both a USB flash drive and a memory
card connected to the scanner, the
scanner will only send the scanned image
to the USB flash drive, as the USB flash
drive has a higher file storage priority than
the memory card.
• The scanner only accepts FAT16 and
FAT32 file systems. NTFS and other file
systems are not supported.
• See Supported memory card types on
page 16 for all supported memory card
types.
• Refer to Inserting a USB flash drive on
page 13 for more information on how to
connect a USB flash drive.
Step 4: Turning the scanner on
1. Press and hold the Power button for 1
second. The Power and Status indicators
blink.
NOTE: For more information on the
indicators, see Indicators on page 7.
2. Wait until the Power indicator stops
blinking and then goes off. The Status
indicator will light up instead, indicating
that the scanner is ready.
NOTE: Do not insert an original into
the feeding slot when the Power
indicator is blinking. The original will
not be scanned.
10 Using the scanner
Step 5: Making a scan
1. With the side to be scanned facing upward
and in the correct orientation as indicated
by the orientation mark, place one edge of
the original on the scanner and adjust the
paper guide so that the original is aligned
with the left side of the feeding slot.
Insert the original into the feeding slot.
WARNING: Do not scan glossy
photos in humid environments
(humidity higher than 70% RH).
Otherwise the surface of the photo
will become sticky and cause the
scanner to jam.
Align left
2. The original will be fed into the slot and
scanned automatically. The Power
indicator blinks while scanning.
NOTE: See More information on
page 15 for how to insert photos and
other types of originals.
3. When the scanning is complete, the Status
indicator will keep blinking for a while,
indicating that the scanner is processing the
image and storing the file.
Wait until the Status indicator stops
blinking before inserting the next original.
WARNING:
Insert only one sheet at a time. Insert the
next original only when the previous one is
done. Otherwise the scanner will fail to
function normally.
Using the scanner 11
NOTE:
• Do not remove the memory card or USB flash drive (if
connected) while the indicators are blinking.
• A fully charged battery can sustain up to 150 scans of 4” x 6”
size photos to the memory card. This is a factory test value for
your reference, and actual battery performance may vary.
• This scanner only supports output images in JPEG (.jpg) format,
and the date/time attribute will not be added.
• Although this scanner accepts FAT16 and FAT32 file systems, it
is recommended that you use the FAT16 file system whenever
possible, as it allows the scanner to read/write data faster.
• For more information on how this scanner names and stores the
scanned image files, see File naming and storage rules on
page 16.
• If the memory space is nearly full (below 1MB), the Status
indicator blinks (see Indicators on page 7). Delete some files or
move files elsewhere if necessary.
Step 6: Turning the scanner off
To turn off the scanner after all originals are
scanned, press and hold the Power button for
1 second. The Power indicator will blink and
then go off.

The scanner follows the rules below to store scanned image files:
• If the memory card or USB flash
Root
drive is used with the scanner for the
directory
first time, the scanner creates a folder
named IRIS_IC1 in the root
directory to store the scanned image
files. Each image file has a prefix
IMG followed by a 4-digit serial
IMG_0001.jpg
number in the sequence the image is
IMG_0002.jpg
stored.
• If the file name reaches
IMG_9999.jpg
IMG_9999.jpg in the IRIS_IC1
folder, another new folder named
IRIS_IC2 will automatically be
created to store subsequent new files,
IMG_0001.jpg
and so on.
IMG_0002.jpg • If the root directory already contains
folders created by the scanner, the
IMG_9999.jpg
scanner will store the images in the
last folder created.
• There can be up to 9 folders
(IRIS_IC1, IRIS_IC2... IRIS_IC9)
in the root directory. If exceeded,

Care and maintenance
Cleaning the scanner
In order to maintain the best image quality and prevent dust
accumulation, clean the outer casing, image sensor and roller inside
the scanner regularly (about every 50-100 scans, or whenever
unwanted vertical/horizontal lines appear on scanned images).
WARNING: When cleaning, use only the recommended and
supplied tools. Do not use any tools other than those supplied
to clean the image sensor inside the scanner. Otherwise it will
be permanently damaged.
Cleaning the outer casing
Please follow the instructions below to clean the outer casing of the
scanner when necessary.
1. Use a suitable dust blower to blow off the dust on the scanner.
2. Use a slightly dampened cloth to wipe off any smear on the
surface of the scanner.
3. Wipe the scanner with a dry and clean lint-free cloth.
WARNING: Do not use any solvents or corrosive liquid (for
example, alcohol, kerosene..., etc.) to clean any part of the
scanner. Otherwise the plastic material will be permanently
damaged.

output slot.
4. Repeat step 3 five or six times
consecutively.
NOTE: Do not apply too
much force on the swab.
5. Slide the sensor cleaning swab to
the left end of the output slot,
and then remove it from the slot.
Store the sensor cleaning swab in
a safe place and keep it away
from dust.
Calibrating the scanner
If scanned images look fuzzy or there are unwanted lines on them,
then the scanner needs to be calibrated in order for the sensor to
resume its original precision. To calibrate the scanner:
1. Follow the instructions on page 17 to clean the image sensor.
2. Turn on the scanner and then insert
the calibration card as shown. The
scanner will scan the pattern on the
calibration card and calibrate the
sensor inside automatically.
NOTE: Make sure that the
calibration card is inserted in
the correct direction. Otherwise
the calibration won’t work.
Care and maintenance 19
Storing the scanner
If the scanner will not be used for a long time, follow the
instructions below to store the scanner for future use.
1. Disconnect the scanner from the computer.
2. Place the scanner and accessories in a box or bag to keep them
from accumulating dust.
3. Place the box or bag in a cool and dry place where it is
inaccessible to small children.
After long-term storage, it is recommended that you clean and
calibrate the scanner before use.
Battery maintenance
This scanner has a built-in Li-Polymer rechargeable battery. The
capacity of the battery normally decreases by time. Nevertheless,
you can still follow the suggestions below to extend the battery
lifetime as long as possible:
• Use the scanner at least once per week.
• Charge the battery regularly. Never leave the battery fully
discharged for a long time.
• Keep the battery fully charged when not in use. If the scanner will
not be used for several weeks, partially-discharge the battery
before storage.
• Keep the scanner and battery away from heat.
If the scanner only works when it is connected to a computer,
contact your dealer to replace the battery.
WARNING: Do not attempt to replace the battery yourself.
Incorrect handling of the battery or using a wrong type of
battery may cause damages to the product or result in
personal injuries.
20 Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting
Problem: There are strange lines on the scanned image, or the
image is not clear.
Solution: Please ensure the following:
• Are there scratches on the original, or is the original
clean? Remove any stains or dust from the original
before scanning.
• Has the scanner been used for a long period of time
without cleaning and calibration? Refer to Cleaning the
scanner on page 17 and Calibrating the scanner on
page 18 to clean and calibrate the scanner and then try
again.
Problem: The original gets stuck halfway in the feeding slot.
Solution: Press the Power button. The original will be ejected from
the scanner for 10 seconds so you can remove the jammed
original.
Problem: The Status indicator blinks rapidly and scanning is
not possible.
Solution: Check the following:
• If a memory card is used, is it locked (set to writeprotect)? Unlock the card.
• If a memory card is used, is it full? The indicator blinks
when the free space on the memory card is below 1MB.
Use another card if necessary.
• If a memory card is used, is it in NTFS or other file
system? The scanner only accepts memory cards in the
FAT16 and FAT32 file systems.
• Is the USB flash drive connected properly to the USB
socket? Re-connect the drive and try again.
• Did you insert the next original before the scanning
process of the previous one is completed? Turn off and
on the scanner and try again. Make sure that you scan the
next original only after the scanning process of the
previous one is completed
• Does the length of the original exceed the maximum
acceptable size? Refer to Suitable and unsuitable types
of originals on page 15 for more information.
Troubleshooting 21
Problem: The scanner feels warm to the touch.
Solution: It is normal for the scanner to emit a small amount of heat
(around 30-45 C) after prolonged use. However, if there
are strange odors coming out from the scanner or the
scanner feels hot to the touch, disconnect the scanner
immediately from the power supply or the computer/
digital photo frame.
Problem: The scanner does not respond to any operations.
Solution: An internal error may have occurred. Insert a suitable
object (like an extended paper clip) into the Off button
hole on the bottom of the scanner to turn the scanner off.
Turn on the scanner and then try again.
Problem: The scanner’s startup (initialization) time becomes
long.
Solution: Try the following:
• If you have formatted the memory card (if used) to the
FAT32 file system, it is recommended that you re-format
it to the FAT16 file system for the scanner to work faster.
Note that re-formatting will erase all data in the memory.
• If a memory card is used, the read/write speed of the card
will also affect the startup time. Use a card with a faster
read/write speed whenever possible.
