Before entering the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology program (ComET major), students usually complete an associate degree or its equivalent from a community college or regionally-accredited technical institute. At that level, the student should have completed basic courses in DC and AC circuits, electronic devices and circuits, digital electronics, and introduction to programming (C++ preferred). 2. This program option meets the needs of students who are interested in the design and operation of computer and web based systems. ComET provides the skills for career success in designing, building, and installing computer systems of all descriptions including hardware, software, and networking / web operations. Students begin with a core that provides a basis in computer-oriented hardware including electronics, digital systems, and microprocessors. This hardware core is integrated with a series of courses offered by the Department of Computer Science including programming and problem solving, data structures, and software engineering. Graduates find employment as network managers, computer system engineers, and network designers. 3. The Electrical Engineering Technology program is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET). Graduates of this program are eligible to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam in Virginia and many other states. 4. There are not any transfer equivalencies for ENGT 111 in the VCCS. Program Directors will review students’ transfer credits and make substitutions if there are appropriate alternative courses. ITE 119 is an acceptable substitution, but should only be taken if necessary after review of existing transfer credits by Program Director. 5. As part of the major, ComET students take the courses required for a minor in Computer Science. This minor satisfies the University’s upper division general education requirement. 6. CS 333 may be substituted for CS 150 and 250. The prerequisites for CS 333 are an introductory programming course similar to CS 150 but not necessarily using C++ and Math 163 or equivalent. This is a web-based course, which requires significant maturity of the student. . Course prerequisites are strictly enforced. Please refer to the University Catalog for prerequisites of all Electrical Engineering Technology and Computer Science courses. EET 480W is normally taken in final semester; students who have completed most other EET courses may take EET 480W earlier with permission of Program Director. In order to satisfy a computer science prerequisite for a computer science course, the prerequisite grade must be a C or better. 7. For EET Senior Electives, students choose from the following: EET 405, 410, 415, 420, 460, and 470. CS Senior Electives may be any 400 level CS course; in addition, CS 381, 330, and 390 will count as CS Senior Electives. 8. The general education requirement in language and culture is met or waived for students who: Completed high school before December 31, 1985 (also applies if GED received after a scheduled graduation of December 31, 1985 or earlier). Completed the third level of one foreign language in high school. Completed the second level in each of two foreign languages in high school. Earned a university-parallel associate’s degree approved to meet all lower division general education requirements. Earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited institution prior to admission to ODU as a second degree student. Have a native language other than English. If the requirement is not met by one of those means, students must successfully complete the 102F or 111F level of a college foreign language course. American Sign Language is accepted by Old Dominion University to meet the general education requirements in language and culture. The Writing Proficiency requirement is satisfied with the completion of the following courses with a grade of C (2.0) or better: ENGL 110C, ENGL 211C, and EET 480W. 9. . Students are held individually responsible for the information contained in the University Catalog http://catalog.odu.edu/ Failure to read and comply with University regulations will not exempt students from whatever penalties they may incur.
