SEASON 2015/2016
M ESSA GE F R OM THE CEO
Welcome to our 2015/16 season.
The Irish Chamber Orchestra
is a stellar ensemble, renowned
for its imaginative programming,
vibrant virtuosity and unrivalled
diversity. Its blend of programming
combines popular masterworks,
exciting and innovative cross-artform
collaborations alongside works
commissioned for the orchestra.
Following successes at home and abroad, the extraordinary Hungarian
conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy Principal Artistic Partner) and the
multi-talented clarinettist and composer Jörg Widmann (Principal Guest
Conductor/Artistic Partner) have extended their contracts, and will
continue to present a combined vision with two very distinctive styles of
programming until 2019.
In the 2015/16 season, Gábor Takács-Nagy shifts his focus from Haydn
to Schubert. Jörg Widmann has performed and recorded Mendelssohn
Symphonies with the orchestra and opens a new chapter on Weber,
Beethoven and Schumann alongside some of his own innovative
compositions. The ICO collaborates with some of the finest international guest soloists
in its 2015/16 season – including one of the world’s up-and-coming
pianists, Igor Levit. We are delighted to work once more with UK maestro
Jonathan Cohen. Irish artists are very much to the fore as we collaborate
for the first time with Irish Youth Opera and NI Opera in Handel’s comic
opera, Agrippina. Celebrated Mullingar-born soprano Ailish Tynan makes
two appearances in the season, as does pianist Finghin Collins.
In October he performs Haydn, and a week later performs as part of an
ICO ensemble at the Bualadh Bos Children’s Festival in Limerick (SaintSaëns’ Carnival of the Animals).
As international demand for the orchestra continues, the ICO embarks
on a US-tour with Hungary’s hottest cellist, István Várdai, conducted
by Gábor Takács-Nagy. 2016 heralds a significant landmark in the
ICO’s history as the orchestra commences a 3-year residency in
Heidelberg which allows the orchestra to perform several concerts at the
distinguished Heidelberger Frühling with Igor Levit. This is the orchestra’s
first international residency with further concerts beckoning in Cologne,
Würzburg and Zürich with Jörg Widmann and one of the great violists of
our time, Tabea Zimmermann.
Over many years, the orchestra has enjoyed fruitful relationships with an
array of Irish composers, and this season features works by John Kinsella
and Bill Whelan.
Adding to the orchestra’s already numerous CD recordings, the Orfeo label
will soon release a series of Mendelssohn’s Symphonies alongside works
by Jörg Widmann.
As always, ICO activities extend to myriad settings beyond the concert
hall, with a varied programme of work in schools, hospitals and a variety
of community settings.
The Irish Chamber Orchestra, resident at the Irish World Academy of
Music and Dance, has its own studio on campus at the University of
Limerick. It is generously funded by The Arts Council of Ireland/An
Chomhairle Ealaíon. Additional support from Culture Ireland contributes
significantly towards the ICO’s international touring initiatives. Our
sincerest thanks to all our Patrons and Friends for their continuing loyalty
and support of ICO endeavours.

The Irish Chamber Orchestra is Ireland’s
finest chamber orchestra, renowned for its
virtuosity, its intimacy, programme diversity and
outstanding musicianship. The ICO continues to
work with Gábor Takács-Nagy (Principal Artistic

Jörg Widmann and the orchestra begin a new
journey with Weber, Beethoven and Schumann.
As always, the ICO introduces some of the
finest international guest soloists in its 2015/16
season, including one of the world’s up-andcoming pianists, Igor Levit. We also expand our
long tradition of cross-artform collaborations: in
September Handel’s comic opera, Agrippina (the
first co-production between the ICO, Irish Youth
Opera and NI Opera) will play 6 performances
in four cities. UK maestro Jonathan Cohen
makes a welcome return as musical director of
this production. Celebrated Irish soprano Ailish
Tynan makes two appearances in the season,
as does Irish pianist Finghin Collins. The
ICO dedicates a concert to the 1916 Easter

Garrett Sholdice, John Kinsella, Linda Buckley,
Elaine Agnew, Míchael Ó Súilleabháin, Frank
Corcoran and Sam Perkin. The orchestra has successfully toured across
Europe, Australia, South Korea, China and

orchestra (Berlin 2007), Jörg Widmann has
injected an unprecedented energy which
has seen the orchestra appear at De Singel
Antwerp (2011), the Konzerthaus Berlin, the
Rheingau and Lichfield Festivals (2013). The
ICO undertook a 13-city US tour with flautist,
Sir James Galway (2013). In 2014, Widmann
and the ICO performed at the Storioni Festival
Eindhoven, the Heidelberg Frühling Festival,
the Mozartfest Würzburg, in addition to
concerts in Bregenz, Austria and Wiesbaden,
Germany with Ailish Tynan. This November
the orchestra embarks on a 4-City US tour with
Principal Artistic Partner, Gábor Takács-Nagy
and celebrated Hungarian cellist, István Várdai. 2016 marks a significant year for the orchestra
as it commences its first international (3-year)
residency in Heidelberg, resulting in several
concerts at the distinguished Heidelberger
Frühling with Igor Levit. In addition, the ICO
will perform in the Philharmonie, Cologne as
well as returning to the Mozartfest Würzburg
with acclaimed violist Tabea Zimmermann. The
orchestra makes its debut at the Tonhalle Zurich
(2016) and the Konzerthaus Vienna (2017) in
addition to a return London performance at the
Wigmore Hall in the 2017/18 season.
Adding to the orchestra’s already numerous CD
recordings, the Orfeo label will soon release a
series of Mendelssohn’s Symphonies combined
with works by Jörg Widmann, as directed by
him.
Outside the concert hall, the Irish Chamber
Orchestra stimulates minds and hearts with
vitality unmatched by other ensembles. Its
Sing Out with Strings programme provides free
tuition in singing, song writing, violin and cello
tuition to 300 children throughout Limerick city,
developing not only musical skills, but also key
life skills using music as a tool for tangible social
change.
The Irish Chamber Orchestra is resident at the
Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the
University of Limerick and is funded by the Arts
Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.

Music in London.
“The charismatic, ebullient Gábor Takács-Nagy..brought
their brilliant best out of the players in the Irish Chamber
Orchestra… Takács-Nagy’s loving respect for the music drew
astonishing ethereal playing in addition to huge aggression,
brilliant dancing rhythms and sublime majesty from the ICO.” The Irish Examiner

(an opera by George Frideric Handel)
The Irish Chamber Orchestra looks forward to its first collaboration with Irish Youth Opera.
With a libretto full of intrigue, deception and humorous escapades - scintillatingly set to music - Handel’s Agrippina
is a gem!
In an Irish premiere production, the IYO is bringing Handel’s stunningly beautiful masterpiece to Limerick before
touring to Galway, Dublin and Armagh. It will be performed in an English translation prepared by Amanda Holden for
English National Opera in 2007.
In a co-production with Northern Ireland Opera, in association with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the Lime
Tree Theatre Limerick, IYO has assembled an incredibly exciting creative team featuring award-winning baroque
conductor Jonathan Cohen, NI Opera’s Artistic Director Oliver Mears and acclaimed Irish designer Annemarie
Woods. IYO’s Agrippina cast is brimming with the very best of Irish singers some of whom make their full-scale
professional operatic debut in this production.

Mozart combined the first two movements of the overture to his opera La Finta
Giardiniera (KV 196) with a third movement in the style of a rustic dance (KV
121), to form the opening Symphony in D major (“No. 51”). The programme
concludes with his Symphony No. 29: a crystallization of the young Mozart’s
revelatory self-confidence in ever-expanding musical structures.
In between, two works by Stravinsky feature. His neo-classical Concerto in D
is virtuosic and unparalleled in the repertoire for string orchestra. In his Septet,
we meet the exploratory Stravinsky: a melody generated from a single series of
notes unifies and informs this remarkably ingenious composition.
Haydn’s D major Concerto featuring Finghin Collins is a tour de force of fluency,
warmth and taste for the soloist. This highly attractive and satisfying work also
promises audiences a taste of the exotic: the Finale is a dazzling Gypsy-Rondo.

Carnival of the Animals
Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals is one of the greatest musical delights children can enjoy.
A child prodigy himself, Saint-Saëns was renowned as a virtuoso pianist of wide-ranging tastes as
well as being a prolific composer.
Carnival of the Animals - a witty, 14 movement Grand Zoological Fantasy - was written while on
vacation in Austria. Intended as just a bit of fun for friends, Saint-Saëns requested that it was
never published or performed during his lifetime as he thought the work would tarnish his ‘serious’
image! Despite only allowing ‘The Swan’ to be published in his lifetime, the work has now become a
cornerstone of the classical repertoire and his most popular work. Carnival of the Animals is beautiful,
funny and clever all at once – enriched by witty verses from Ogden Nash.
Narrator Louis Lovett is Ireland’s most experienced and critically acclaimed actor for young audiences.
This is one for all the family!

Mozart‘s Figaro overture sets the scene for the hilarity that ensues. The frenetic Presto tempo, breathless figuration and
drawn-out crescendos all add to the energy of this four-minute sprint. Mozart‘s Serenade No. 12 for winds (sometimes
referred to as Nacht Musique) shows the composer’s ingenious way of mixing a light serenade tone with an artful
descant model.
In each of his 5 string quartets, Jörg Widmann explores a different aspect of the most intimate of sound worlds. His
Quartet No. 1 is the first movement of the cycle – each quartet follows a traditonal form of setting, almost like separate
movements of a vast, five movement work.
Sándor Veress’s three movement Sonatina for Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon is a favourite of Widmann’s and is fun-filled for
the listener. A jaunty opening Allegro giocoso and a good-natured Finale encloses a central movement slightly more serious
in nature.
The winds, horns and timpani shine once more through the texture of Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No. 8 (in the
subsequent symphonic orchestration by the composer), as we hear the young genius coming fully into possession of his
powers and, aged 13, already expanding the boundaries of the Classical style.
18 SEASON 2015/2016
“The ICO played a blinder under Widmann, stiffening the spine
of the young Mendelssohn’s muscle-stretching excercises,
negotiating the asperities of the Prokofiev Quintet with
aplomb and skilfully handling the stark chiaroscuro of some of
Widmann’s own duos for violin and cello.”

Christmas concertos were very popular and performed during the festivities in Italy. Corelli’s concerto, commissioned by Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, one
of his influential patrons, is one of a set of twelve Concerti Grossi. Filled with beautiful pastoral references, the Pastorale from the Christmas Cantata by
Scarlatti (sung by soprano Ailish Tynan) is one of the most popular Christmas works of the baroque era. Corelli and Scarlatti were both employed by the
exiled Swedish Queen Christina, bearing out our Scandinavian theme.
Rautavaara’s The Fiddlers is a fabulous ode to folk music, based on old Finnish traditional tunes. The composer extracts a vast amount of variety and
emotional nuance from them, using the basic material in surprising ways. Grieg’s romantic songs mirror his artistic and personal development more
intimately than any of his other music. Ailish Tynan sings a selection of love-songs, many of which were written for Grieg’s wife, Nina. His much-loved
Holberg Suite, recalling musical styles and forms from the past, is one of Grieg’s crowning achievements. Ailish Tynan concludes the programme with a
selection of Christmas carols, starting with Koppången, one of Sweden’s finest carols. In Scandinavia, St. Lucia’s Day (13 December) marks the beginning
of the Christmas period, and the celebration of light begins with the beautiful carol Sankta Lucia. Finally, Oh Holy Night is the icing on this Christmas cake!

Pergolesi’s musical career spanned only six years, during which he produced liturgical music of astounding beauty. His
exquisitely emotive Salve Regina, with soloist Ailish Tynan, is pure in tone, expressive and poignant.
Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ opens with a solemn Introduction, a movement suffused with sorrow and beauty
based on the Crucifixion. The final sonata underscores the momentousness of the close of Christ’s life as the Earthquake
heralds the Resurrection.
Schubert’s church music is among his finest. He set the Latin Salve Regina no less than 4 times during his short life. In
the setting performed by Ailish Tynan, the music progresses from veiled grief to genuine tragedy. Mozart’s Kommet her
ihr frechen Suender is based on Psalm 66 and presents a bereft mother, Mary at the foot of the cross as her son is being
crucified.
Schubert’s electrifying Death and the Maiden is one of the pillars of the quartet repertoire bringing together his two talents:
his natural instinct for melody and song. In the slow movement, Schubert uses the theme from his original song and builds
variations on it, creating a pattern where the dark and powerful opening is met by the soft lyrical reply of the maiden and
clearly shows us how the saddest of music can truly enrich our emotions. The Finale is a relentless Tarrantella of utmost
virtuosity.

This concert celebrates the beginning of a three-year collaboration with one of the world’s up-and-coming pianists, Russian-born Igor Levit. The first leg of
the ICO’s residency in Heidelberg (April 2016) sees the orchestra performing Mendelssohn and Mozart piano concerti with Levit.
Adding to the almost completed the cycle of Mendelssohn’s mature Symphonies and String Symphonies directed by Jörg Widmann, this programme features his
String Symphony No. 12 – the last of the series, composed when Mendelssohn was just 14 years of age. His Piano Concerto No. 1, written aged 21, was wildly
popular during his lifetime, and remains so today. This concerto is vivacious music of the kind only Mendelssohn could write – with more than ample opportunity for
Igor Levit to display his pyrotechnics! The fifteen year-old Mendelssohn’s obscure Sonata for Clarinet and Piano remained unpublished until 1987. Widmann has
arranged its stunning middle movement, an Andante, for string orchestra.
Widmann’s Jagdquartett (Hunting Quartet) is rough, wild and exciting, brimming with energy. The four players are required to traverse fields and forests of
notes and sound effects, reaching a climactic, killing conclusion. From the ‘innocent’ opening to the chase and the chilling final scream, this gallop will have
you chomping at the bit!
Weber’s virtuosic Symphony No 2. In C major is a fine example of his style, written by the 21-year-old in less than a week.
It demonstrates what Debussy aptly described as Weber’s ability to ‘scrutinise the soul of each instrument’.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
The Irish Chamber Orchestra has developed a comprehensive community
engagement programme. Every time you buy an ICO ticket, you support
our programme, bringing live music from the concert hall directly to the
community.
Sing Out With Strings
The ICO provides weekly workshops in singing, song-writing and violin
tuition for 300 children across Limerick city. The project was established
in 2008 by the Irish Chamber Orchestra as a Community Engagement
Programme working within Limerick’s regeneration process. It includes
four schools, Galvone National School, Southill Junior School, St.
Mary’s National School and St. Enda’s Community School. Inspired by
El Sistema, the Venezuelan model of music education, which provides
free instrumental and vocal tuition countrywide, Sing Out With Strings
has gained a significant place within the musical fabric of primary music
provision in Limerick’s regeneration process. This important work has
attracted local and national attention and recognition as an excellent
model of instrumental music provision with primary schools. The project
addresses issues of inclusion, equality of access and provision and
highlights the numerous benefits that a long-term project of this nature
has on the children, staff, parents and the wider community. Both at
individual and collective levels the project is uniting communities, building
local pride, creating vehicles for expression, stimulating emotional
responses and developing tangible musical knowledge and skills. Sing
Out With Strings aims to continue to expand, contribute and strengthen
the social, cultural and creative capital of communities within Limerick’s
regeneration process.
34 SEASON 2015/2016
Academos Irish Chamber Orchestra Academy
The ICO is resident at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at
the heart of an emerging college of Performing Arts at the University of
Limerick. The Academy boasts a respected MA in Classical Strings, a fulltime two-year Masters in Classical String Performance which is operated
jointly by the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the Irish World Academy,
UL. Central to the course is the Irish World Academy String Ensemble,
Academos which is tutored by members of the Irish Chamber Orchestra
and offers students extensive opportunities to perform publically in
orchestral and chamber ensembles. Master-classes and workshops by
internationally acclaimed visiting directors, soloists, and guests of the ICO
are a unique feature of the programme.
Music Factory
Music Factory is the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s summer camp for
children aged 8-12 years. Children participate in a range of activities
from dance, drama and drumming to singing, song-writing improvisation
and visual art.
ConCorda
ConCorda is an exciting international chamber music course for
young string musicians run by the Irish Chamber Orchestra and Irish
Association of Youth Orchestras. Now in its 22nd year, ConCorda
provides a rare platform for students from fourteen years upwards
to discover and explore all aspects of string chamber music in an
uncompetitive and inspiring environment.
Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin;
Composition Project
Irish composer Ian Wilson worked with ICO
musicians with support from the Arts Council
of Ireland. Together they have produced a
piece for string quartet and soprano based on
the experience of stroke. This composition
was performed in the Adelaide and Meath
Hospital with soprano Deirdre Moynihan, as
part of the National Centre for Arts and Health
Concert Series.
Irish Chamber Orchestra Community Visits
Throughout the year, ICO musicians allow time to
visit local voluntary organizations and charities
and perform for audiences who are unable to
attend concerts. Performances at St Gabriel’s
School for Children with Special Needs, St
Paul’s Nursing Home, The Children’s Ark in
Limerick Regional Hospital, Sisters of Charity,
Milford Hospice and St. Camillus Hospital have
garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback.
Ceol na Mara
Ceol na Mara takes place in July in the very beautiful Kylemore Abbey,
Connemara and is designed to give string players of all ages and
standards the opportunity to meet and play music together under the
guidance of ICO’s Oonagh Keogh, Director. The course includes master
classes, chamber music and workshops in Irish traditional music.
Saturday Strings at the ICO
An innovative string programme run by ICO violinist Diane Daly on
Saturday mornings at the ICO Studio. The programme includes preinstrumental classes for 4-7 year olds, beginner strings, continuing strings
and chamber groups.
