Today, we look at Rome in a way that
is seen by few but that will be very
enjoyable. We see Rome via some of
its major basilicas such as St. John
the Lateran and St. Mary Major.
These basilicas were founded at the
end of the Roman Imperial period
with St. John’s being the oldest of all
of the proud basilicas. Both basilicas
will allow us insight to a crumbling
empire, into a growing religion, and
were where many great leaders of the
early church held sway. Afterwards,
we will leave the confines of central
Rome to visit one of the main
catacombs. Catacombs were where the first Christians gathered and where the earliest of
Christian history in Rome played out. This is a can’t miss when visiting the ancient city.
Afternoon and evening are on your own. Your Italy Revealed Tour Director can again
give you some great suggestions as you desire.
Overnight in Rome
Day 06: Provincial Rome (Tivoli Gardens and Imperial Villas)
Rome was more than the city
center, it also boasted a great
“country” lifestyle as well. After
breakfast, we head out to visit
some of the most impressive villas.
We will first visit Hadrian’s villa.
The emperor Hadrian expanded
the empire to its largest limits and
was known to live in grand style.
Even 1,900 years later, you will be
amazed just how grand noble
Roman life really was. Afterwards,
we go on to Tivoli for a visit of the
Renaissance villa known as Villa
d’Este. This villa was created by the Cardinal d’Este in the XVI century. It is world
famous for its fountains that abound in Renaissance and mannerist form and are still a
hydraulic wonder. Set in an intriguing garden, the Villa d’Este has inspired gardens and
fountains worldwide for centuries and may inspire you! Afterwards, we return back to
Rome.
Afternoon on your own. Evening, for those who wish, your Italy Revealed Tour Director
will lead a walk of the Santa Maria in Trastevere area. This neighborhood is eclectic,
trendy, and has some wonderful monuments from late imperial times to the modern age.
