Product Bulletin 9100 Release B 3 3M ™Graphics PrintableWarranties Fabric 9100 Factors that Affect Graphic Performance Life The actual performance life of a graphic is affected by: • • • • • • • • the combinations of graphics materials used. complete ink drying or curing. selection, condition and preparation of the substrate. surface texture. application methods. angle and direction of sun exposure. environmental conditions. cleaning or maintenance methods. Graphics Manufacturing ! CAUTION Before using any equipment, always read the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation. Inkjet Printing Always read and follow the ink manufacturer’s written instructions on usage. Print Surface Fabric 9100 can be printed on either side, however, for best results 3M recommends printing on the inside wrap of the roll. Total Ink Coverage The maximum recommended total ink coverage when printed with all approved 3M UV inkjet inks: • 280% CMYK total ink laydown • 660% C,M,Y,K,Lc,Lm,Ly,Lk total ink laydown when printing color-white-color layers assuming the white layer is printed at 100% laydown. Do not exceed the recommended total ink coverage for the ink series used on this product. Having too high a total physical ink amount on the product results in media characteristic changes, incomplete drying, overlaminate lifting, and/or poor graphic performance. For additional details about total ink coverage, refer to the 3M Product and Instruction Bulletins for 3M inks. Completely Cure Graphics i IMPORTANT NOTE Insufficient curing can result in graphic failure including curling, increased shrinkage and adhesion failure, which are not covered under any 3M Graphic Warranty. See the ink’s 3M Product and Instruction Bulletin for more details. Laminating Graphic Protection Film to Printed Fabric Laminating printed fabric with 3M Graphic Protection film increases the durability of the printed fabric and protects the inks from fading. Generally, heating the fabric and/or laminate is preferred to allow the adhesive to flow into the fabric fibers. Without this adhesive flow, the graphic protection film will not develop sufficient adhesion to the fabric. Use of a lamination process that applies heat to the fabric and the vinyl laminate is preferred. Applying too much heat directly to the laminate may cause the laminate to stretch, putting unwanted tension in the fabric that may distort the fabric weave and prevent the laminated fabric from laying flat. It is recommended that heat be applied to the fabric allowing the heated fabric to heat the laminate film and adhesive. 4 Product Bulletin 9100 Release B ™ 3M™™ Printable ControltacFabric Graphic Film 3M 9100 Processing Condition Recommendations The following table includes all 3M Graphic Protection films approved for use with 3M Printable Fabric 9100. The laminator settings are suggested starting points for the roll-to-roll laminating equipment and may not be the optimal conditions for your shop, laminator or graphics. Manufacturers are responsible for testing, adjusting, and approving adhesion and appearance. Properly laminated fabric should lay flat after lamination. There should be no waves or other visible distortions in the overlaminated fabric. Table B. Warranty Period for Finished Graphics in a Standard U.S. Vertical Exposure. Graphic Protection Laminate contact Roll Fabric contact Roll Roll Pressure Speed 85 F (30 C) 210 F (99 C) 80 psi 1-3 fpm 9025UM i IMPORTANT NOTE - 3M recommends roll-to-roll lamination equipped with independently heated top and bottom rolls and speed controls with a minimum speed of 1 foot per minute. - Better, more consistent lamination can be achieved when the fabric wraps partially around the heated fabric contact roller - The laminate contact roll may heat up over time, resulting in inconsistent stretching and release of the liner from the laminate film. Caution should be used to monitor the temperature of the roll in contact with the laminate film. - Monitor the tension of the unwinding overlaminate film and fabric to reduce possibility of creating creases in the heated laminate. - If the temperature of the top/unheated roll exceeds 90 F (32 C), the vinyl laminate film may start to stretch, which may be seen as the peel line from the liner changes. - If the laminator will be idle for more than 30 minutes, be sure the heated nip is open and neither the printed fabric nor the overlaminate film are exposed to the heated roll. General Assembly Key Graphic Construction Tips Keep these key application tips in mind before and during application. 1. Clean the work area. Make sure the work surface and surrounding area are properly cleaned to avoid contaminating the graphics. 2. Temperature. Make sure the fabric, air and surface temperatures are between 60 and 100 °F (16 and 39 °C). 3. Seams and overlaps. See "Sewing Tips" on page 6. 4. Keep newly printed fabric in ambient shop temperatures for at least 24 hours. This allows ink to achieve proper cure. Seaming Constructions For most digitally-imaged graphics, you can create multi-panel signs. However, take these points into consideration: • • • • Digitally-imaged fabric may shrink after installation. Depending on the seam construction, if the fabric shrinks at a seam, there may be a gap or a hole in the fabric. The possibility of separation at the seams can be reduced by or eliminated by creating an overlap at the panel seams. Use only horizontal or only vertical seams, do not use a combination of seam directions. If you are making horizontal seams, lap the top panel over the bottom panel (rain lap). • Seams for the overlaminate should be offset from seams in the fabric. Do not place overlaminate seams on top of fabric seams. This practice creates a better sealing seam. Product Bulletin 9100 Release B 5 3M ™Graphics PrintableWarranties Fabric 9100 Cutting The following are common cutting methods for this fabric. For individual pieces, use one of these cutting methods: • Hot knife cut - cut with graphic face down to hide any minor discoloration caused by the hot knife. • Electronic cutter • Scissors Sewing Tips • Needle selection - ball point needle recommended. Use of sharp point needles may cut the fabric threads causing premature failure of the fabric. • Thread - use outdoor durable thread. Maintenance and Cleaning Cleaning Frequency Signs and awnings should be cleaned at least twice a year. Cleaning is easy and it helps maintain the luster, bright color, and the overall sharp appearance so your awning or sign facing looks good for many years. Dirt and dust accumulates slowly on signs and the day-to-day change may not be noticed. However, the change in color, visual appearance, and the loss of sign brightness from this accumulation can become significant in a relatively short time. Contaminants may also cause premature wear and staining of the product. Signs and awnings located in areas with heavy atmospheric pollution such as in dense industrial areas, or areas of heavy pollen and insects, may require cleaning at least four times a year. Washing Simple dirt can be removed by washing the affected area with a mild soap and water solution. Use of pressure washers is not recommended. The cleaner must be wet, non-abrasive, without strong solvents, and have a pH value between 3 and 11 (neither strongly acidic nor strongly alkaline). See 3M Instruction Bulletin 6.5 for details. Mold and Mildew The polyester fabric does not support the growth of mold and mildew. However, without regular cleanings, mold and mildew will try to grow on the dirt and debris that accumulates on the fabric over time. Wash your fabric with a solution of 1/2 cup of household bleach in a gallon of water should you discover any mold or mildew. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry. Oil Occasionally during production, installation, or post-installation some oil spotting might occur on the fabric. Clean the oil with a solution of mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry. Depending on the severity of the stain two or more washings may be necessary. 6 Product Bulletin 9100 Release B ™ 3M™™Graphics Warranties Controltac Graphic 3M Printable Fabric 9100Film Shelf Life, Storage and Shipping Shelf Life The shelf life is never more than 3 years from the date of manufacture on the original box. If you process the film, the shelf life is changed to 1 year from the processing date, but not later than the 3 year maximum from the manufacturing date. Storage Conditions • • • • • 40 to 100 F (4 to 38 C) Out of sunlight Clean, dry area Original container Bring the fabric to room temperature before use Shipping Finished Graphics Flat, or rolled printed side out on 6 inch (15 cm) or larger core. This helps prevent the overlaminate from popping off. Health and Safety !
