President’s Message
Welcome to another excellent edition of Sidelights, a newsletter that
is raising the bar and being noticed. A great communication medium to
share with others and also advertise in.
At the risk of labouring (pun deliberately intended) the point, the October long
weekend, Friday 2nd, is the IESANZ New South Wales Chapter annual lighting
awards dinner. Don’t forget!
Yes, we know it may be a little inconvenient but the options were to either to
hike the prices significantly to cover increased costs closer to Christmas or
hold the event in September which clearly was unworkable in a year when the major SPARC event
occurred. On the positive side it is an excellent opportunity to market and socialise with clients
(refer to
of the 2014 event to refresh your memory). Don’t forget the engine that drives your
business: your staff, a simple reward for all that extra effort.
Also, engines really run well on 98 octane and she is the fuel that keeps those engines running.
‘Happy wife, happy life’ and some spouses and partners like to understand what is happening and
they chat and socialise. It is difficult for anyone to put a $ value on that, however, consider the cost
of high staff turnover, depression or divorce? Invest wisely; take out a gold or VIP sponsorship.
You may not be aware but the national office administration is now being provided by a different
business located in St Leonards, it is no longer the Lighting Council of Australia office in the ACT.
Invariably, with any handover, there is a learning process and I am hearing indirect reports that some
members are not receiving recognition in publications etc. Please do no mutter in the corner or stew
in silence and become disgruntled. I may pretend to be visually impaired and have selective hearing
but send a brief email about the situation and allow me to me mutter or stew in the corner whilst we
sort it out. I need to know it’s broken so we can fix it.
Remember, black and white October 2nd IES New South Wales annual awards dinner, STAR events centre.
Invest wisely, invest in your future and sponsor a table or two. Good health!

Technical Meeting Sydney
Sydney International Airport Facilities Tour
June 25, 2015 Sydney
The Sydney International Airport Tour - another great
NSW Technical Meeting was held on Thursday 25th June,
starting at Rydges Airport Hotel.
Although numbers were restricted to 25, for this presentation
and walking tour, the attendees were engrossed with the
content.
On this rainy winter night, we were off to a great start with
drinks and canapés outside our function room where
Ibby Kanalas and Sarah Bhardwaj of Northrop, explained how
they lighted the Sydney International Airports T1 car park and drop off area from vision to realisation.
Their aim was it not only to comply with AS/NZS1158, P11a, but also provide a feeling of safety and
provide an attractive appearance.
The existing, 1kW MH floods were replaced using LED flood-lights from
30M masts. The LED floods were also used on the more conventional height
poles, all with a careful choice of optics to light the car-park with great
uniformity and vertical illumination levels. The Entry / Exit underpasses
were lit to 160 Lux (AS/NZS1680)by use of linear, diffused LED luminaires
for the use by visitors, attendants and CCTV cameras.
The end result was a very large area lit to perfection by the carefully placed
4,000K light, uniform where it needs to be, but with great use of contrast
where possible, for visual stimulation and safety. There is also no light
above the horizontal, which keeps both airport authorities and Dark Sky
activists happy.
During the tour, which was expertly guided by Ibby and Beng from SACL,
the sky opened and drenched everyone, but maybe a last sign of a great
night was that the Sydneysiders along with visitors from both ACT and VIC kept laughing and smiling to the end.
Thank You’s go out to the night’s sponsors, NORTHROP, DOME LIGHTING SYSTEMS and ADVANCED LIGHTING
TECHNOLOGIES who provided for the fantastic food, drinks and shelter before the presentation and tour.
Everyone enjoyed an informative and fun night - see you at the next IES NSW Technical Meeting!

Mt Stromlo Tour
June 29, 2015, Mt Stromlo Observatory
We had hoped for clear skies for the tour of the Mount Stromlo observatory, but unfortunately poor weather .
prevented us from a night of star gazing. Instead, Brad E Tucker gave us a tour of the undercover facilities at
Mount Stromlo. Before the tour we heard from Caleb King of Erco (the evening’s sponsor) about the difficulties
in lighting near observatories. Tim Shotbolt, one of the board of directors, gave us a run-down on the
Dark Sky Association and what they have in common with lighting designers.
Caleb talked us through his experience with the lighting near
the Mount John observatory on the south island of
New Zealand in the Mackenzie Basin. This observatory is
located close to several resorts that, like the observatory,
benefit from the fantastic stargazing properties of the area.
Caleb explained that when lighting this area, particular
attention was taken to avoid spill light which would detract
from the night views. One method that was employed was
the use of low lit bollards on paths that were used as more of
a signal light to the direction the path. Typically a path would
be lit using pole top luminaires that flood the path and
surroundings in light.
A well-known lighting designer in the Sydney region, Tim
pointed out the unity between good lighting design and
the intentions of the Dark Sky Association. A good design
uses light appropriately and without waste; the Dark Sky
Association is working to reduce light pollution.
The Dark Sky Association is struggling internally with its own
title. The Association’s aim is not for the sky to be dark, but
rather to reduce the light pollution on the night sky such that
the impact of the stars can be seen. Tim recalled growing up
in country NSW where he could see a sky full of stars at night.
This is in contrast to Sydney where light pollution makes
star gazing difficult.
One way that Dark Sky has tried to reduce light pollution is
by encouraging manufacturers to create luminaires that limit
light spill. This is done by creating a ‘Dark Sky Compliance’ for
fixtures if they have the appropriate light distribution.
Tim notes the issue with this is that a luminaire could be re-oriented in such a way that would negate the
advantage of this distribution.

During his involvement with the Dark Sky Association, Tim has discovered various issues with LEDs for outdoor
lighting. Initially the Association preferred LEDs for outdoor lighting as this would reduce energy and spill light.
However, local councils have responded to this technology by increasing lighting levels due to the lower energy
cost and increasing the number of outdoor lighting installations. The Association is encouraging the appropriate
use of LED technology.
The blue content of LED light is a significant factor in the light pollution issue as it diffuses in the atmosphere
more than other parts of the visible spectrum. Caleb noted that LED manufacturers are reducing the blue
proportion in LEDs, so this problem should reduce over time.
Later in the evening Brad E Tucker headed our tour of the Stromlo facility. This facility was one of the first buildings
in the region. In 1924 it was established as the Commonwealth solar observatory. During these early days,
the observatory was one of the only places in the region that was able to accurately calibrate timekeeping devices.
The observatory now has many beautiful old clocks from this era that were donated.
On a wall near the entrance, there is a copy of Brian Schmidt’s Nobel Prize.
This award was for the ‘Accelerating Universe’ discovery he made at the Stromlo observatory. This discovery paved
the way for recognizing that 95% of the universe is not observable.
During World War Two, the optics skills of the observatory were put to use creating the sights for commonwealth
arms. Since World War Two, the observatory has been rebuilt twice. In both 1952 and 2003, local fires burned
down the buildings and equipment. Each rebuild has allowed a redesign and repurpose of the facilities.
The facilities are now used to detect space junk, and hopefully soon, push this waste out of orbit using strong
lasers. There are also onsite facilities for creating and testing satellites, including one enormous piece of kit
known as the Wombat XL. This device is used to thermal test parts at the temperature of space.
The Mount Stromlo facility was an exciting facility to tour. With its rich and diverse past, it will be interesting
to see the next impact this facility will have on the global scientific community. Hopefully as members of the
lighting industry we keep them in mind when illuminating Canberra. If we don’t, the Dark Sky Association will
continue to remind us of the best lighting installation which we will be missing out on.

Future city lights: art & information or light pollution
July 30, 2015, The University of Sydney
The first of our panel discussion format meetings was held on, Thursday 30th July at the New Law Building,
Lecture theatre 024, The University of Sydney.
The speakers were Dr Martin Tomitsch, Senior lecturer at the University
of Sydney and director of the Design Computing programme.
Dr Matthias Hank Haeusler, Director of computational design at the
University of New South Wales. Tim Shotbolt, president of the
Dark Sky Association and Emeritus Professor Warren Julian.
The meeting was well attended by over forty members, guests and
students. Each speaker was given 15 minutes to state their case, for
or against; media facades, electronic billboards, illuminated signage
and the like. Then it was opened to the audience to participate in the
discussion. Simm Steel of Steensen Varming, did a wonderful job
moderating the crowd and making sure it didn’t get too heated.
A very big thank you, goes to our generous sponsors, The
University of Sydney Henry Halloran Trust and Cities Network.
It was an enjoyable night and great format, which we will
repeat next year in July. Any suggestions for a topic will be
considered, please email them to: iesnswtechnical@gmail.com

Technical Meeting Sydney
Sorting out the basis of general lighting practice
August 20, 2015, iGuzzini showroom Sydney
It was our pleasure to have Christopher ‘Kit’ Cuttle back
on our shores, to present this month’s IES technical
meeting at iGuzzini.
A large crowd gathered on Thursday 20th August,
to hear Kit’s presentation on the issues of existing metrics
and how a new metricmay improve indoor lighting.
“The metrics that we use for specifying illumination levels
in buildings do not relate well to the aspects of
appearance that that determine peoples’ assessments of
how brightly-lit or dimly-lit indoor spaces appear to be.
This has become an issue of intense discussion in some
quarters because as new developments in technology
are being directed towards satisfying current lighting
standards, they are being diverted away from delivering
their full potential for developing lighting performance.
Kit has proposed new lighting metrics to overcome
this problem for indoor lighting. This involves a metric
to give reliable indications of peoples’ assessments of
the brightness or dimness of lighting, and then using
this metric to specify minimum lighting levels for
various indoor spaces.
This proposal has stimulated new research into the
concept of perceived adequacy of illumination, which
has the potential to significantly change the basis of
lighting standards, and with it, our notions of effective
and efficient applications of general lighting practice”.
This informative talk stimulated conversations, as the
crowd mingled after the presentation and enjoyed
amazing food and drinks, which is symphonious with
the character and style of the evenings sponsor,
iGuzzini
Thank you Rino and all the team for the wonderful venue and evening.

University Education
Graduate Certificate / Diploma / Masters
Design Science (Illumination Design)
We’re evolving
The University of Sydney Illumination Design program continues to evolve in response to
the changing field of lighting and the Australian higher education landscape.
At the beginning of 2015, the Design Science offerings were replaced with Architectural Science degrees.
New students can enroll in the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, or Master of Architectural with
a specialisation in Illumination Design. Much of the lighting curriculum remains as it was, but repetition
of content between units of study has been minimised and coursework on the subjective and aesthetic
aspects of lighting design has been added. For students wishing to earn a degree with a double-specialisation,
Audio and Acoustics, High Performance Buildings and Sustainable Design can also be studied.
All required Illumination Design units of study are taught in intensive sessions
(five full days of instruction per six credit point unit), with many classes on weekends.
