Discrete Wire-to-Board IDC Connectors
The 917X Series of surface mount Insulation Displacement Connectors (IDC) were developed to connect individual
wires directly to a PCB ranging from 14AWG to 28AWG for automotive and industrial applications. The simplicity
of inserting a wire into the connector with a small tool allows a wide range of devices to be connected to the PCB
without the need for soldering.
In SSL applications specifically, these connectors are used to bring power and signal onto the PCB or are used
to daisy chain multiple boards together in a long string. While the IDC contact provides a gas-tight connection to
conductor of the wire, the housing has been designed to grab the insulation of the wire to provide a positive strain
relief even in the harshest conditions. In case of repair, the wires can be removed and replaced up to three times.
Features & Benefits
• IDC contact provides a gas-tight connection to the PCB for long term
reliability
• Current ratings range from 1A up to 15A
• Optional through and end caps lock in place to provide maximum
strain relief

AVX
The 9276 Series has been developed for a fast and reliable wire-to-board termination in a sleek 2.50mm pitch
SMT package for a general application in industrial and commercial markets. With almost every product on the
market today having to deal with a small number of discrete wires to connect components to a board, the 9276
Series connectors meets this challenge by simply stripping the wire and inserting them into the connector. This
makes the connector very termination friendly within the factory as well as in the field by electrical installers. The
dual contact design carries a maximum current rating of 6A with a minimal PCB footprint.
AVX provides a small insertion/extraction tool which will allow the wires to easily be replaced up to five times.
AVX

SMT Board-to-Board Connectors
The 9159 Series of board-to-board interconnect has been designed specifically for the unique Solid State
Lighting (SSL) market requiring coplanar (horizontal-to-horizontal) PCB mating with a 3A current rating in the
smallest package available. This solution permits two PCBs to be mated end-to-end creating strips of LED
lighting. These single sided SMT connectors are perfect for both FR4 and metal boards where you need to butt
the boards up together to minimise LED separation. Availability of both white and black insulation colors make
them perfect for lighting as well as industrial applications. With sizes from 2p-6p, these high reliability connectors
boast gold plated beryllium copper receptacle contacts for harsh environments.
Features & Benefits
• Single sided SMT; supports FR4 and metal PCBs
• 5.50mm mated width; minimises PCB space to decrease LED pitch
• Gold plated BeCu spring contacts; reliability for harsh environments
• Operating Temperature: -40ºC to +125ºC
• Heat endurance testing of 1000 hours at 125°C
• Voltage Rating: 125VAC
Applications
• Coplanar PCB mating in SSL products
• LED linear lighting strip

BOURNS
LSP Series LED Shunt Protector
Bourns® LSP Series protectors are electronic shunts that provide a current bypass when an LED element in an
LED series string fails open circuit. This ensures the remaining string of LEDs will continue to function. There are
many cases where high reliability of the LED lighting must be maintained, such as LCD backlighting, transport
lighting, avionics, intrinsically safe and low maintenance lighting.
Features & Benefits
• Fast switching
• Automatic reset
• SMB package DO-214AA
• Suitable for industrial lighting environments
Applications
• LED streetlights
• LCD backlighting

LED Lighting Solutions
The SMAJxxCA Series can provide voltage signal clamping and protection
against ESD, EFT and Surge transients applied within the circuitry.
The SRU1048 Series offers high-current handling and low DC resistance
in a compact form factor.
The CRA2512 Series are current sense resistors in standard 2512 chip
sizes with a high-power density (3W) and low TCR (75PPM). The surface
temperature of the resistor is lower than similar parts of the same size
from other manufacturers, reaching typically 48˚C under a load of 1W.
The PWR263S-20 Series are SMD resistors in D2PAK casings with very
low-inductance and high-power ratings. They can be used with linear
current regulators to limit the current especially in high luminosity LEDs
which consume a lot of current. These resistors also do not exhibit high
surface temperatures which is a requirement in many designs.
The Bourns® MF-MSMF075 Multifuse® polymer PTC provides overcurrent
and overtemperature protection.

COOPER BUSSMANN
Inductor Selection for LED Driver Designs
COOPER BUSSMAN
The LED needs to be properly driven to ensure optimal performance and long life.
Designing and implementing an effective driver with suitable topology is the key to
successful LED lighting circuits.
The topologies used in present day LED drivers are:
• Buck • SEPIC • Boost • Flyback • Forward • Buck-Boost
Each topology is selected according to the required power level and cost.
Semiconductor companies have developed Integrated Circuits (ICs) to drive LEDs.
Typical Circuits for LED Driver Applications
Buck Circuit
Boost Circuits
Boost circuits are power converters
with an output DC voltage greater than
its input DC voltage. Boost circuits
generally require one inductor.
A buck circuit regulates input DC
voltage down to a desired DC voltage.
Buck circuits generally require one
inductor.
Buck Boost
Flyback Circuits
The Buck-Boost circuit generates an
output voltage that is either higher or
lower than the input voltage. The
polarity of the output is opposite to that
of the input. Buck-Boost circuits
generally require one inductor.
Single Ended Primary Inductance Converter
(SEPIC) Circuit
The SEPIC circuit is a popular
Buck-Boost topology that allows the
output voltage to be higher or lower
than the input voltage. The SEPIC
output polarity is the same as the input.
SEPIC circuits generally require two
identical inductors that can be individual
inductors or a dual-winding inductor.
The Flyback transformer combines
isolation, energy storage, and voltage
scaling. The Flyback allows multiple
output voltages as well as can provide
plus and minus outputs by using tapped
windings. Flyback circuits require a
custom-designed flyback transformer.
Coiltronics designs and makes custom
and semi-custom transformers to match
flyback circuit design requirements.
Forward Circuits
The Forward transformer only provides
isolation and voltage scaling. The
Forward allows multiple output voltages
as well as can provide plus and minus
outputs by using tapped windings. A
separate energy storage device
(inductor) is needed.
Forward circuits require a customdesigned forward transformer and an
output inductor. Coiltronics designs
and makes custom and semi-custom
transformers to match forward circuit
design requirements as well as has a
number of output inductor offerings.

PLED Open LED Protectors
PLED Series open LED protectors provide a switching
electronic shunt path when an LED in an LED string fails
as an open circuit. This ensures that the remaining string
of LEDs will continue to function if a single LED does not.
PLED series devices were designed to enable higher
reliability in outdoor LED lighting applications such as
street lighting, outdoor signage, aircraft runway lighting,
roadside warning lights and other applications. Compatible
with one, two and three watt LEDs that have a nominal 3V
forward characteristic, PLED Series devices are available
in two surface mount packages, the DO-214 and the Quad
Flat Pak No-lead (QFN). The QFN’s low profile, chip scale
package (CSP) is ideal for dense board applications.

OHMITE
Light Fantastic
Lighting technology is changing fast. LEDs, organic LEDs, superbright LEDs and whatever the next
generation of lighting may bring. Ohmite’s designers are working just as fast to ensure that your lighting ideas
can be brought to life with solutions which will match the most demanding applications and specifications.
From resistors through to sophisticated heatsinks, Ohmite has the components which will make your lighting
project the success you want it to be. Here are some other successes we are proud to be associated with.
Medical
Surgeons and dentists require reliable, high-intensity light sources to do
their jobs. A company which provides the light sources these professionals
need uses fibre optic light sources which include xenon, metal halide, LED
and halogen solutions. Keeping the light source cool, for longer life, is a
constant problem. Fans are helpful, but must run very quietly, especially in
the operating room setting. To solve this problem, they use a combination
of fans and heatsinks to make their system run cooler. With the recent
introduction of custom-made AH heatsink extrusions, Ohmite was able
to offer a solution. This heatsink has a very high aspect ratio (number of
fins per inch of heatsink cross-section) and had five holes drilled to suit
customer specifications.
M Series Heatsink
EMS, Fire, Rescue and
Defence
Everyone knows that above all, the emergency services are totally
dependent on reliability from their personnel right down to the tiniest
component used in the manufacture of their vehicles and equipment. We
are proud to supply one of the world’s largest specialist distributors with
rheostats which are used in lighting controls.

PC-58 Series
OHMITE
The consequences of failure in this type of equipment do not need to be
explained. That is why major European manufacturers choose to use
Ohmite PC-58 Series wirewound resistors.
Industrial Lighting
By its very nature this lighting needs to be both rugged and cost efficient.
Manufacturers across the world have specified our 40, 80, Slim-Mox, WH
and MCS resistors in order to meet the rigours of this tough environment.
MCS Series
LED Heatsinks
Ohmite S Series LED Heatsinks are low cost and easy assembly
heatsinks designed for ‘star’ power LED modules supplied by companies
such as Cree, Lumileds, Osram and others. This simple heatsink can
hold LED modules and can be mounted simply using thread forming
screws. The heatsink has two types of surface finish, black anodised or
degreased, and can be used in either natural (free) or forced convection
applications.
S Series Heatsink
Military Applications
Ohmite rheostats were first developed in 1932. They are arguably the
world’s longest surviving electronic component made to its original
specification and design and they are still being designed into new
projects. Their environmental ruggedness for withstanding high
temperatures, shock and vibration without failure make them the preferred
voltage control for military applications. We supply a tandem Model E
rheostat assembly (made up of 2 rheostats bracketed together) which
is situated in the cockpit of attack helicopters. They provide illumination
control for the cockpit LEDs and the infrared landing lights.

We don’t need to tell you how important this application is – lives depend
on it. Our custom-designed heatsinks ensure that these headlights
provide the bright illumination and superior performance perfect for the
operating room when the surgeons require premium performance.

Lighting
With the built-in reliability of our 200 Series, 270 lugs, 90 Series axials, 89
Series, and Slim-mox resistors, this product does an important job, often
in the most difficult circumstances.
LED Bulkhead Lighting
Our 40 Series and 10 Series are the resistors selected for use in LED
dome lights for mobile applications where operation in rugged conditions
is often necessary.
Slim-Mox
10 Series
Lighting Control Panels
Commercial lighting control panels provide rich and cost-effective lighting
control for maximum energy savings. Ohmite’s Engineers assisted in the
selection of our LVK and TDH Series resistors for these applications.
Power Saving Emergency
Lighting
TDH Series
Emergency beacon lights have very low power consumption which can
reduce power needs by up to 96%. To aid this function Ohmite’s 20 and
89 Series resistors are used.
Electronic Ballasts
20 Series
Programmable energy saving digital ballasts are the perfect choice
for energy efficient high-intensity discharge lighting, whether metal
halide or high-pressure sodium types. Compared to magnetic ballasts
these environmentally friendly, digital programmable ballasts provide
dramatically reduced energy consumption of up to 60%. To achieve this
Ohmite’s Metalohm and 40 Series resistors are used.
Metalohm
LED Vehicle Light Bars
Constantly flashing high brightness LEDs require some serious power
control. Manufacturers choose Ohmite RW and LVK resistors to ensure
that, in an emergency, lighting would be one less thing to worry about.
Xenon Strobe Lighting
RW Series
These lamps and controllers feature the high-intensity, precisely
focused beam angle and flexible modular design needed for
numerous direct illumination applications including license plate
illumination on moving vehicles, night time surveillance and industrial
machine vision applications. Ohmite’s TAP600 resistors are selected
for this particular use.

PHOENIX CONTACT
SMD-Connectors for LED applications
Phoenix Contact created a generation of small connectors that help lighting manufacturers to simplify the wiring of LED modules. The PTSM Series
connectors are easy to integrate into existing SMT processes and feature fast, reliable connection technology.
When it comes to solid state lighting, more and more manufacturers use high-power LED boards for modular designs. A popular solution for these
applications is to mount the high-power LEDs on a metalcore printed circuit board (MCPCB). The metal layer in these boards provides an excellent
means to disperse heat from the LEDs but also has an adverse effect: Conventional through-hole connectors which ensure fast and easy wiring of the
board cannot be used anymore.
Suitable push-in connectors for LED boards in surface-mount technology are still hard to find on the market. Therefore, it is common practice that the
connection wires are often soldered to the MCPCB in an additional, sometimes even manual, process. Soldering to metal core boards is an energyand time- consuming procedure that increases unit costs. Pressure of costs, quality issues and the unpleasant appearance of the connection drive
manufacturers to look for better connectors for their LED boards.
PTSM Connector
PTSM/PTPM Plug & SMT Header Systems
Smaller, More Compact, Faster to Connect
The PTSM connector measures only 5mm in height and offers a wide
range of beneficial features. Its housing is made from LCP (Liquid Crystal
Polymer) to withstand the heat during the reflow process. Rugged SMD
style anchors enable multiple wire termination and disengagement cycles.
The connector is approved for stranded and solid wires and allows for
cross sections up to 0.75mm2. Operation of the spring connector is
comfortable and simple – a small screwdriver is the only tool needed for
wire insertion/extraction.
The PTSM spring cage plug connector with a 2.5mm pitch can conduct
6A at a voltage of 160V. Flexible and rigid wires can be connected with
a cross section of between 0.14mm2 and 0.75mm2. The pierce contact
PTPM plug connector also with a 2.5mm pitch conducts 4A at a voltage
up to 160 V. The connector can clamp flexible conductors from AWG 26 to
AWG 22. A range of only 5mm high THR and SMD headers are available
for these plug connectors. The LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymer) enclosures
ensure that these headers can be easy handled in SMT processes.
Daisy chaining of LED modules is a popular method of arranging LED
boards. This in turn means the supply current is getting higher with the
number of modules connected together. Featuring a current rating of 6A,
this small connector is more than sufficient for most applications using
daisy chaining. Available in horizontal and vertical versions, the PTSM
connector supports various design approaches.
These miniature plug connectors are especially suitable for connecting the
power/data supply to LED boards which are used in lighting applications.
In addition, hardware developers can choose between two mounting
technologies: SMT for MCPCBs and pin-in-paste for ordinary PCBs.
All products are wrapped in tape on reel.

Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are typically used for transient overvoltage
suppression in AC line voltage applications. Lightning, inductive load
switching, or capacitor bank switching may cause transient overvoltage
conditions. In these applications, there also exists the potential for a
sustained abnormal overvoltage/limited current condition that may cause
the MOV to go into thermal runaway, resulting in overheating, outgassing
and possibly fire. New thermally enhanced MOVs help protect a wide
variety of low-power systems against damage caused by overcurrent,
overtemperature and overvoltage faults, including lightning strikes,
electrostatic discharge (ESD) surges, loss of neutral, incorrect input
voltage and power induction.
