It’s never been easier to get the right instrument in the right hands, right away. 02 SPOTLIGHT Low-power device design and test: The three criteria your power supply must meet Today’s R&D and design validation engineers find themselves working more and more on low-power devices, modules, and products. That’s particularly true now that the burgeoning Internet of Things promises to connect more than 50 billion devices by 2020. These designs use battery power or DC power from a small AC adapter and often include wireless communications to transmit operating data. But as your designs change, so should your DC power supply. Modern low-power designs call for power supplies that meet new requirements for device protection, low noise, and low-current measurement. That’s why Keysight engineered the compact E36100 Series programmable DC power supplies—to power your designs safely and quietly during manual tests or automated sequences. Device protection Low-power devices under test (DUT) are more susceptible to excess voltage and current. These DUTs require both overvoltage (OVP) and overcurrent protection (OCP) to prevent damage. OVP shuts down the power supply when the voltage exceeds nominal values; OCP does the same during a short circuit or overcurrent event. With traditional power supplies, engineers frequently designed external circuits for DUT protection. But with the E36100 Series, the output starts to drop less than 1.5 ms after an overvoltage or overcurrent condition occurs. At the same time, built-in over-temperature protection keeps your power supply safe. In addition, by displaying multiple settings simultaneously instead of burying them in menus, the E36100 Series lets you see your exact overvoltage and overcurrent settings—before you turn output power on and potentially destroy a valuable DUT, along with your project schedule. Low noise Power supply noise, in the form of added and unwanted electronic interference, can also impact a DUT’s behavior. With traditional larger power supplies, engineers often use external circuits to filter noise. But thanks to their diminutive size, the 2U ¼-rack E36100 Series models inherently produce a lot less noise. The power supply itself is also acoustically much quieter, meaning it’s easier for you to live with on your bench. Low-current range One other critical issue is that traditional power supplies often cannot accurately monitor current in a low-power DUT. Engineers previously used a DMM to measure such low current—but doing so meant extra wires, an additional instrument, two displays, and two instrument setups. The E36100 Series offers a low-current range that lets you measure a few mA of current, which isn’t possible on the standard range. This low-current range enables fast measurements without the hassle, space, or expense of extra equipment. Table 1 shows the E36102A power supply specs for both ranges.
