Sustainable solutions
for a life on the go
English
Showing the way in
sustainable food service
board packaging
The pace at which people lead their lives in the modern world means they
have less spare time than ever before. As a consequence, packaging needs to
provide convenience for a busy life on the go.
In addition, the range and diversity of food products
continues to grow, making it increasingly important
for brand owners to clearly differentiate themselves
from competitors and ensure their products stand out
on the shelf. Packaging plays a fundamental role in
communicating brand personality and the promise of
the product experience. It is the face of the brand, the
‘silent salesman’ on the shelf, defining the brand and
helping maintain and grow market share.
to show they share their customers’ concerns and
are acting on them. Stora Enso has a long history of
close collaboration with the food industry packaging
converters in developing safe, ecologically friendly
packaging.
Fibre-based packaging is the sustainable option,
providing optimal performance in protection, branding,
product safety and recyclability without compromising
its positive environmental effects.
As consumers become increasingly concerned about
their carbon footprint, resource sustainability and
recycling, it is becoming critical for brand owners

establish their green credentials.
The exceptional quality of Stora Enso baseboards, and
an extensive range of polymer coatings, combine to
make Cupforma, Trayforma and Primeforma products
an excellent choice for a wide variety of food and
beverage-related applications.

Coatings for enhanced
performance and
protection
The barrier coating of packaging boards means applying polymers in extremely
thin layers on the baseboard. The main function of the coating is to protect the
contents against humidity, oxygen and grease.
What’s more, the creative use of different coatings
in combination with the right baseboard, optimises
package performance, ensures high visual quality,
saves materials and simplifies both converting and
packaging. Ultimately, of course, it helps to reduce
the food waste.
Coating Options
Biopolymer
PE
Stora Enso produces a wide selection of boards for the
food service market and provides the largest variety of
polymer-coatings including PE, compostable biopolymer, high-barrier and heat-resistant coatings.

High-barrier
Heat-resistant
(PET)
PE-LD Low-density polyethylene
PET Polyethylene terephthalate
EVOH Ethylene vinyl alcohol
Here is a brief description of them:
The key feature of PE-coating is humidity protection. It is
typically used in liquid packages, drinking cups, frozen food,
ice cream and yoghurt, and for many moisture sensitive dry
foods.
Stora Enso also offers PE-Green coating, which is made
of renewable raw materials. The coating is made from
sugarcane, which means that none of the raw materials come
from fossil sources and the barrier provides the necessary
protection for the contents.
Our compostable biodegradable coating option is available
for a number of our board grades. Biopolymers are tailormade biodegradable coatings offering humidity and grease
barriers, as well as sealability. Biopolymers are based on raw
materials that come from natural crops or from fossil sources, or
combinations of these. Biopolymer coated paperboard breaks
down to humus and CO2. Compostability is one option to
recover packaging waste. In recycling schemes, biodegradable
products are primarily sorted into the collection of compostable
materials. In case there is no composting infrastructure,
recycling and recovery of biodegradable materials together with
PE-coated materials are viable options. Recycling schemes of
used cartons vary in different countries and regions.

baseboard offering purity and versatility for all your needs.
Outstanding performance
The Cupforma family
All cupstock grades offer outstanding performance in
such vital areas as strength, formability, convertibility,
printability and runnability. The middle layer can also
be enhanced with CTMP (Chemi-Thermo-Mechanical
Pulp) which translates into lighter basis weight and
thus better material efficiency.
Products made of Cupforma boards are used for a wide
variety of food service and food packaging applications.
Cupforma baseboards offer uncoated and clay-coated
options for cups and plates. They can also be coated
with thin layers of polymer compounds to create a
unique range of individual and integrated applications.
This includes serving hot and cold beverages, ice
cream, yoghurt and other dairy products, dry foods
and even portioning the most aroma-sensitive spices.
All food packaging materials produced by Stora Enso
are safe and food-contact approved. Production sites
have certified hygiene management systems.

Cupforma Natura offers a really economical and ecological alternative for drinking cup manufacturers.
Cups made of the Cupforma Natura are light but their
functionality is good, thanks to the new structure of
the board.
Cupforma Natura PP is a board grade for microwaveproof cups. Both the board and the coating of Cupforma
Natura PP are crafted to withstand heat, which makes
consumption and serving of such foods, soups and
drinks very convenient.
Another useful member of the family is Cupforma Dairy,
a specially developed two side PE-coated dairy board
that ensures full product protection and offers excellent
sealing properties with paper-based, or other lid materials.
More convenience
Double wall cups have
great insulation against heat
The superb performance is reached via an air gap that
maximizes insulation. The double wall cups are rigid,
safe – yet light – resulting in great user convenience.
Stora Enso offers various material options for the outer
wall, depending on the desired look – matte, glossy or
embossed.
Cupforma Ice is a paperboard for attractive ice
cream packages in a range of sizes. The advanced
construction of the board provides a lower weight
than usual, which helps cut back on raw materials
