This qualification is suitable for students who are expected to get grades A or A* in GCSE Mathematics and who are likely to progress to A-Level study in Mathematics and possibly Further Mathematics. It fills the gap for high achieving students by assessing their higher order mathematical skills, particularly in algebraic reasoning, in greater depth without infringing upon AS Level mathematics, thus preparing them fully to maximise their potential in further studies at Level 3. It offers the opportunity for stretch and challenge that builds on the Key Stage 4 curriculum and is intended as an additional qualification to the GCSE Mathematics, rather than as a replacement. It gives high achieving students an introduction to AS Level topics that will help them develop skills in: Algebra Geometry Calculus Matrices Trigonometry Function & Graphs Weightings of the course - % exam/ coursework/units etc.: Assessment is linear: Paper 1, the written paper (non- calculator) carries 40% of marks and paper 2, written paper (calculator) carries 60 per cent of marks Key assessment dates for students: Practise assessments during the year. Every week students are expected to learn 15 items of vocabulary, which can be found in their planners. Parents can help their children to learn this vocabulary by testing them. Students are also expected to complete exercises from a past reading examinations booklet and use the information in it to access listening exercises. Students should also be accessing Doodle every day to access Powerpoints, quizzes and interactive resources to help them reinforce what they have learnt in class. Put post-its with vocabulary to learn on items of furniture/kitchenware etc. Let him/her put revision post-its around the house Allow them to download foreign language learning apps (there are lots of free ones!) Allow them to download foreign music. Watch a TV channel in the foreign language, your favourite movies, Youtube clips or listen to foreign radio. Research has shown that the best way to learn a language is ‘little and often’. Encourage your son or daughter to learn in small ‘chunks’ and to revise on a regular basis. Learn 5 new words a day and ‘test’ vocabulary with him/her. Ask your son or daughter what topic they are working on – he/she will probably be pleased to try and teach you a bit. Encourage them to check their work carefully. Take an interest in French, German or Spanish events in the news and try to get them to pick up associated vocabulary. Let him/her talk to you in their foreign language – even if you don’t understand! Young linguists like to impress and ‘show off’. Take a trip to that country. Finally, many of our students are willing to do some independent learning but they all need to be encouraged to do so. Whatever you do, be POSITIVE, ENCOURAGING and do LISTEN TO and READ their work (even if you don’t understand a word of it). We run after school sessions every Tuesday to aid students with revision and preparation for controlled assessments. Refer your child to their class teacher for more information. Students also have controlled assessment and reading comprehension booklets to support their studies.
