Introduction --------------------------------------------HEAD OF LEARNING – YEAR 11 Tel: 0161 446 8645 Mr R Crickett (email rdc@parrswood.manchester.sch) Year 11 Parents Evening – 27th January 2011 My name is Robert Crickett and I am delighted to be the Head of Learning for year 11. I have been leading a year group for six years now. I have just seen this Year 11 through to their GCSE’s, my main focus being the learning and outcomes of the pupils. My job is to oversee pupil progress and help the pupils achieve the best possible GCSE results next summer. This means that I also work closely with the faculties in ensuring the required support and challenge is being delivered in the classroom. We will be working closely together as subject teachers and Heads of Faculty to help meet the individual needs of all the pupils in the year group. I will also be leading my team of tutors who will be a vital link in supporting the pupils on all issues during this year, as well as delivering the Personal Development Curriculum. The tutors should be your first point of contact for any questions or information about your child, but please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns and I will do my best to help. GCSE FOOD TECHNOLOGY AQA Food Technology GCSE 4545 Director of Faculty: Ms G Slater (email ges@parrswood.manchester.sch.uk) Teacher of Subject: Ms E Foster (email exf@parrswood.manchester.sch.uk) The major focus for year 11 is coursework completion. Coursework is worth 60% of the final grade and it is important that pupils complete both design folder and practical work to achieve a C grade overall. Pupils are given feedback and guidance throughout the year to improve and develop their work and internal deadlines are set for each class with the class teacher. Pupils need to produce a design folder of up to 25 pages detailing their personal design progress from brief to evaluation. This is worth 20% of the final grade for the course. Practical work together with records of manufacture and ongoing evaluation make up a further 40% of the final grade. The written examination taken in June is the final 40% of the total grade. Pupils are entered for higher or foundation level, based on coursework marks and performance in the mock examination. The pupils receive a preparation paper for the focus of the examination during March of year 11. This becomes the focus for revision but cannot be taken into the examination. Topics studied this year Term 1 Pupils complete their design ideas and evaluate them against the design specification drawn up in year 10. Pupils then choose one or two of the ‘best’ ideas to develop into a final prototype food product, which answers the initial brief. Pupils need to complete six stages of development in practical sessions under exam conditions. At each stage pupils are required to test and evaluate until they have a final prototype design. Pupils then have to look at manufacturing the prototype in a food industry setting. Pupils are encouraged to attend after school help sessions on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings to boost exam grades and develop practical work to a high standard with teacher support. Pupils are responsible for keeping records of practical work in the form of sensory evaluations charts / profiles and written comments.
