Eaton’s Versatility Guides Ship Building Safety, Reliability and Efficiency at
NOR Shipping 2013
HENGELO, The Netherlands … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton will be attending
Nor-Shipping, an exhibition and conference for the maritime sector that takes place from 4 to
7 June in Oslo, Norway. On stand T02-02 Eaton will present its broad portfolio of systems
and product solutions for the marine and offshore industry. Here, visitors can see a
demonstration of the company’s expertise in providing reliable, high-performance energy
distribution and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems as well as automation solutions
that enable safe and comfortable voyages.
With the growing demand for innovative technologies, more complex electronics and
intensive on-board power demands, the requirements for reliability, sustainability and safety
are increasing in the marine and offshore industry. Eaton offers equipment for switching,
distribution, protection, metering and control of electrical energy that meet these demands.
A core competence at Eaton for marine applications is power quality. Thanks to over 50
years of experience in the design, production and delivery of advanced marine UPSs to
cruise lines, ferries, ice breakers, LNG carriers, cable ships, dredgers and oil rigs, Eaton is a
global leader in this area. The comprehensive portfolio comprises of units that protect safety
and cruising related systems, commercial applications on cruise lines, special systems on
board vessels as well as UPSs that guarantee the smooth operation of on-board business
management systems. In addition to its marine certified small (0-3 kVA), medium (8-160 kVA)
and large systems (225-1,100 kVA), Eaton offers complementary power management
solutions with software and connectivity products.

Another technology highlight in Oslo will be the Power Xpert UX, part of the company’s
proven medium voltage switchgear portfolio which recently received Lloyd’s General Design
Appraisal (GDA) marine certification. Eaton’s primary and secondary switchgear are ideal for
the marine industry because the units are sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) free. As a result, the
units match the need for high performance and environmentally friendly technology on-board,
because there is no risk that toxic gases could be released in the vessel.
Eaton’s range of low voltage systems is designed for optimised energy management as well
as for safety and flexibility. For example, the marine certified low voltage distribution and
motor control centre Capitole 40 handling up to 6300 A/ 690 V has a completely arc-free
design by creation of a fault-free zone, and thanks to its plug-in and withdrawable units
accommodates quick on-site changes. Other low voltage systems integrate the arc-fault
protection system ARCON, which not only detects an arc fault, but a special quenching unit
also extinguishes it in less than 2 ms.
“Eaton brings 100 years of power management expertise and decades of marine industry
experience to increase the electrical safety, reliability and efficiency of the shipbuilding
industry” said Oscar Rivella, Segment Manager Marine & Offshore, Eaton. “The industry is a
committed focus for Eaton, and NOR Shipping is an important platform for us to intensify our
relationships in the European shipbuilding market. We are excited to participate and
demonstrate the value of our solutions at the event.”
Visitors to Nor-Shipping 2013 in Oslo can find out more about the company’s broad range of
products and solutions, as well as Eaton’s global service network comprising over 1,200
professionals and selected authorised service partners worldwide.
With the acquisition of Cooper Industries at the end of 2012, Eaton will also be represented in
Norway through Cooper Hernis, a world leader for advanced camera based surveillance
systems, that presents its CCTV solutions at stand C01-31g.
