PROTECT
Lighting applications present the designer with a unique set of challenges that
need to be overcome in order to protect the device and ensure efficient and
long term operation.
Lighting design using power LEDs is fundamentally different to building
conventional incandescent lamps. An LED light comprises multiple individual
emitters connected in series, and a suitable ballast or controller must maintain
a constant current to achieve the desired level of illumination. This has
implications for the capacitive and resistive components used in conjunction
with the semiconductor devices managing the current and voltage supplied
to the LED string.
Whereas components for conventional ballasts are typically chosen on price,
solid-state technology requires higher-quality products to withstand the very
high thermal loads. They also need to match the very long operating life of the
LEDs themselves.
Although LED lighting creates more light and less heat with the available
energy, it still generates a proportion of heat – quite a lot in the case of the latest
high brightness products. The small and delicate semiconductor devices at the
centre of an LED design have definite limits on their ability to tolerate heat.
Good thermal management remains as important for efficient LED applications
as it was with less efficient established sources.
To address these challenges, Avnet Abacus has a portfolio of circuit protection
devices, thermal management solutions, resistors, varistors, capacitors and
thermistors.

PROTECT
Power Passives and Protection
Avnet Abacus supply a complete range of passives
and protection devices for specialist applications
developed for the lighting market. This is in
addition to general commodity passive products.
Our team of experienced product specialists will
be able to assist in the best possible selection of
products for your specific application.
To address the challenges of high temperature
operation and the requirement for constant
current, Avnet Abacus has a complete portfolio
of resistors, varistors, capacitors, thermistors and
chokes in values and ratings suitable for solid-state
lighting applications.
14
w w w. a v n e t - a b a c u s . e u
Varistors
When installing solid state lighting systems it is vital to consider the vulnerability
of devices to overvoltage. Even voltage pulses of very low energy can produce
interference and damage. With its extremely attractive price/performance ratio, the
varistor is an ideal component for limiting surge voltage and current as well as for
absorbing energy.
Power Resistors
LEDs have a much longer life span than traditional incandescent light bulbs as long
as the temperature is adequately controlled. It remains essential to consider thermal
requirements at the onset of the design in order to create a reliable system, so the
simplicity of inserting a high power resistor that can limit current and dissipate power is
a tremendous advantage.
Thermistors
PTC thermistors and their pronounced change in resistance with temperature are ideally
suited to control the LED forward current in all kinds of lighting applications. They can,
for example, be used to realise a derating of the forward current at high temperatures to
protect the LED chip from damage or accelerated aging. Alternatively they can be used
to realise a simple over temperature protection.
Polymer Capacitors
In order to meet the increasingly demanding requirements of solid state lighting
applications, ultra low ESR and high ripple capacitors are essential for new designs. With
the often limited space constraints, polymer technologies are the ideal solution, ensuring
consistent decoupling performance over the full product lifetime.
Power Inductors and Chokes
Efficiency is key to LED lighting power supply design and so specifying the right
magnetics is crucial to avoid any EMC noise or power loss issues. Modern power chokes
and inductors offer high heat resistance, excellent DC bias characteristics and great
reliability at high temperatures with a high tolerance for vibration and very low DC
resistance.

INTERCONNECT
LED applications present a unique set of challenges and subsequent product
requirements. Fixture assembly and installation in the field demand a
versatile range of interconnection solutions enabling multiple individual
units to be connected. These units could be PCBs or standalone modules
for scalable applications such as architectural cove lighting, signage or
emergency lighting.
When selecting a connector for a particular application, electrical,
mechanical, and environmental performance requirements need to be
identified and considered to optimise the selection. Electrically, expected
current and voltage levels encountered during steady-state and transient
conditions need to be evaluated. Mechanically, physical size constraints,
mating direction, wire dress, and even latching techniques come into play.
The end environment that the connector will be exposed to is also critical
in selecting the right connector as it must be able to withstand thermal,
moisture and chemical conditions.
The Avnet Abacus lighting portfolio includes module-to-module, boardto-board, wire-to-board and wire-to-wire interconnects with current and
voltage ratings compatible with LED applications to enable space-efficient
assembly and installation. Working with our franchised suppliers and
specialist partners, Avnet Abacus also provides cabling solutions to custom
lengths as kits of components or complete cable/connector assemblies
ready to install in the field.

DEVICE
CONTROL
Each solid state application will have its own unique
demands when it comes to the requirements of the
device control. Whether the application requires the
ability to dim the light levels, change colours, run through
a pre-programmed sequence or even turn on and off
at a specified time or when triggered by movement or
changes in ambient light levels, Avnet Abacus has the
product solution to meet your needs.
From relays to sensors, from switches to keypads, our
exceptionally broad product offering and wealth of
expertise enable us to recommend the very best solution
for your application requirements.
24
w w w. a v n e t - a b a c u s . e u
Relays
Our extensive range of relay products include power,
automotive and solid state relays
Power relays are used to switch high currents and to safely
make or break the connection to the power source. They also
protect semiconductor parts from high peak inrush currents.
Solid state relays (SSR) can be used if the application demands
controllers that give logical commands such as traffic lights. SSR
will switch high currents as well as lower ones.
Automotive relays are useful if there is a limited voltage
(12/24VDC) and / or harsh environmental conditions. They can
switch very high currents without being damaged.
Switches
For Solid State Lighting (SSL) power rocker switches, power
rotary switches and pushbutton switches are likely to be a
first choice. For design reasons also toggle switches and full
metal pushbutton switches (i. e. anti-vandal versions) may
also be taken into consideration. Dimmer applications would
use either potentiometers for analogue inputs or rotary
encoders for fully digital controls. Specifying the appropriate
DC current contact rating for the switch is vital.
Sensors
Lighting applications will often require sensors to switch
or control the application. Commonly motion sensors or
ambient light level sensors will be used to turn a lighting
application on.

ILLUMINATION
Solid State Lighting (SSL) is being increasingly adopted across
numerous applications due to the increasing capabilities of
the technology together with its low heat generation, reduced
energy dissipation and long product life characteristics.
LEDs are available across an enormous range of brightnesses,
colours and voltages providing bright, true saturated colours
and a wide temperature range making each application
unique and truly bringing the product and product
environment to life.
Each application has a slightly different design requirement
and Avnet Abacus, together with our sister company EBV,
is able to deliver expertise through every aspect of your
SSL design. EBV can provide an exceptional level of service
and support for your complex illumination needs including
LEDs, LED modules, LED drivers, controls and optics from
some of the world’s leading LED lighting manufacturers.
This matched with Avnet Abacus’ expertise across the power
supply, protection, connection and electromechanical control
elements of your design ensures that you get the complete
solution for your design.
