The work experience is the highlight with some excellent progress being made. This is where students have the opportunity to really try out a career, experiencing ‘real world’ hours and building links to employers and ITO’s. It is an opportunity to gain experience and employer references for job applications along with making a start on future qualifications. www.roncalli.school.nz 03 688 6003 PO Box 138, Timaru There is no expectation of paid employment or apprenticeships at the end of the programme but it is often an outcome. Two of our students have been offered apprenticeships already this year as a direct result of their Gateway work experience and another is in full time employment; Thomas Gibson has left school to begin a plumbing apprenticeship, Jordyn Ellis has been offered an apprenticeship with Rickie Shore Building and will be leaving school at the end of term 2 to start his 90 day trial and Sam Auton is working full time as a butchers assistant. We wish them all the very best and well done. Student Profiles: Penny Livesey Before I started Gateway I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do I knew I wanted something to do with food which is my passion. I researched careers such as a chef, baker and kitchen hand, but it took me a while to find out what I really liked doing. My taster days were helpful as they helped me to find out what I really would enjoy doing. I went to a cafe, restaurant, retail store and two bakeries. I loved the bakery work. For my work placement I go every Wednesday to Bernies Bakery. The job involves preparing the ingredients for the baking, icing biscuits and slices and packaging the baking once it is ready for sale. Some of the things I have made include, white chocolate and raspberry muffins, belgium biscuits and chocolate chip cookies. I really enjoy making tasty food and working with the people who work there. I have two assessment booklets to work through from Skills4work, which are practical and I work on them at the bakery. Each unit standard is worth 12 NCEA level 2 credits. I have also completed health and safety and first aid. When I leave school I plan to do a Polytechnic Course to get a Certificate in Bakery. Drew Richmond-Guile I thought Gateway would be a great way to find out about different jobs. I went for a taster day at Todd Mudie Group and tried out plastering but I realised it wasn’t what I really wanted to do. I then chose to look at the transport industry and truck driving and because I enjoyed my taster day doing this, my weekly placement is now at Mainfreight. At my work placement I help with loading and unloading trucks and delivering freight around Timaru. Each week I get to work with different people and visit different companies. Later in the year I am going to undertake a forklift driving course and a dangerous goods course which will help me in my work at Mainfreight. Through Gateway I have also passed the Health & Safety course and gained my First Aid certificate. At the end of the year I would like to leave school and hopefully get a job in the transport industry. Hamish Workman My thoughts before starting Gateway this year, I was a bit scared of what I was getting myself into but at the same time excited. At first I didn't know what the programme was about but when I got involved it was better than what I expected. The first thing I tried was firefighting it was great but not what I wanted to do on Gateway. Secondly I tried panel beating and once again I liked it but not what I really wanted to do. Lastly I tried plumbing and found this is exactly what I want to do - it’s a great job working with great people. My weekly work placement is at Breen Plumbing and the things I do here include, digging drains, laying pipes and other general plumbing tasks. I am also studying some plumbing unit standards, some of these will be assessed in the workplace and some have an external exam. I would like to leave school at the end of the year and hopefully get an apprenticeship. www.roncalli.school.nz 03 688 6003 PO Box 138, Timaru Brodie Watts Gateway is a good subject if you want to leave school and get a job. At the start of the course I researched careers and mainly searched for jobs that involved building. The places I went for taster days were Rickie Shore Building, Thompsons Construction, Rooney Earthmoving and Dimension Building which is my permanent placement. My job involves building houses. I am working through BCITO unit standards and if I pass them all I will achieve 19 level 3 credits. Some of these unit standards are theory and some are practical and have to be assessed in the workplace. They also count towards a future apprenticeship I am leaving school at the end of the year and hope to get an apprenticeship but if I don't I will probably go to polytech and do the pre-trade building course Michael Stuart-Martin Before I started Gateway I had very mixed emotions about the course. I was nervous, excited, overwhelmed and very happy as I realised I was starting my ultimate future and of all things it was just the beginning of my career. The careers I researched and taster days trialed were Light Automotive: Smallbone Holden and Vaughan Motors, Heavy Automotive: HDPS Washdyke and Collision Repair: Brown and Shipman For my work placement I chose Light Automotive Technician. I go to Smallbone Holden once a week; the tasks at Smallbone Holden involves vehicle servicing eg draining oil from engines and refilling, safety checks e.g. brake pads, suspension units, main parts of engine and chassis etc, filling window washer liquid, checking tyre tread and pressure etc, installing parts on vehicles and repairing or replacing parts on vehicles. The learning program I am going through at the moment is the Level 1 Light Automotive introduction course through the M.I.T.O. (Motor Industry Training Organisation). Next year I would love to gain an apprenticeship but if not I will go to Ara Polytechnic and do the Pre-Trade Course for Level 3 Light Automotive Technician.
