Introduction System Benefits Storagebase, Wednesbury, UK Quality Assurance Kingspan strives to continually deliver the best quality products and, with this in mind, all panels are manufactured in production facilities which are certified to ISO 9001. Kingspan Insulated Panels sources its colour coated metal from several world class coating suppliers and the Guarantee includes a coatings protection against corrosion, chemical attack, ultra-violet radiation, humidity and abrasion for up to 40 years (in nominated geographic zones), so the building owner can be sure that the building will continue to look good year on year. The thermal efficiency and structural performance of the panels are guaranteed for periods in excess of 25 years. Kingspan Insulated Panels has attained certification to Environmental Management Standard ISO 14001 across most of its manufacturing sites globally and is currently working to complete accreditation for the remaining sites. The majority of sites have also achieved OHSAS 18001 (Health & Safety). Kingspan Insulated Panels’ unique FIREsafe PIR insulation core is tried, tested and proven by internal teams and external bodies for consistent thermal, structural and fire performance. Kingspan Guarantees In recognition of the many different demands that are placed on construction professionals today, Kingspan Insulated Panels guarantees not just one aspect of its products, but all of the key performance areas. Kingspan Guarantees are the only guarantees that cover the coating, durability, structural, fire and thermal performance of a product in a single, unique package. 13 System Benefits Ease & Speed of Build Site-assembled, Multi-component System Unlike traditional multi-component systems, Kingspan insulated metal-faced panels are single-component systems, delivered by one company. Site-assembled, built-up systems are more likely to experience delays in construction due to the scheduling of multiple trades and the ordering of multiple components. The systems can be quickly and easily installed with the aid of mechanical lifting equipment through a single-fix installation process. The rapid speed of installation can help to reduce the risk of accidents, as less time is spent working at height. It also means that the building is weathertight sooner, allowing internal fit-out and external finishing to commence earlier, minimising delays and the need for multiple trades, therefore achieving a significant reduction of overall build programme and cost. At the same time, guarantees, service support, site inspections and maintenance are also supplied by multiple sources which can lead to an increased risk of liabilities. Introduction System Benefits The easiest, fastest and most cost-effective strategy to reduce heating and cooling energy demand and construction costs is to use Kingspan insulated roof and wall systems. The excellent thermal performance of Kingspan insulated panels can result in energy savings of as much as 30% more than standard, cavity-based insulation systems. Superior U-values Guaranteed Airtightness & Weathertightness Kingspan insulated panels have a FIREsafe & FIBREfree PIR insulation core, uniquely designed in-house to guarantee a superior thermal performance in hot and cold climates. The panels are fitted to the exterior of the building and create a thermal skin that reduces internal temperature loss and provides a thermal shield against external temperatures. One of the biggest sources of building heat loss or heat gain is due to air leakage i.e. ‘leaking buildings’. The superior joints on our systems ensure that they remain both air and weathertight over the life of the building. We guarantee: ■ Insulation The closed cellular structure of the insulation provides zero moisture ingress with no air infiltration. This guarantees lifetime thermal reliability, without ageing or degradation. ■ Low continuity with no gaps or missing insulation; energy usage and operating costs; ■ Exceptional ■ Low ■3m3/hr/m2 Design Flexibility & Aesthetic Appeal Kingspan’s commercial and industrial wall and roof systems offer designers a comprehensive range of building solutions for vertical and horizontal wall applications and for flat and pitched roof applications. The wide range of fabrication accessories enables the creation of fully integrated, eye catching and unique architectural features. Available in multiple profiles, finishes, colour options and cover widths, Kingspan insulated panels provide customised building design and creative freedom. All our panels are easily integrated with traditional construction methods and building systems. 15 U-value compliance and reliability; CO2 emissions; airtightness certainty at 50Pa. System Benefits Fire Performance The ability of buildings to perform well in the case of fire and to offer protection to both occupants and property are of primary importance to specifiers, owners, investors and insurers. Kingspan Insulated Panels takes this issue extremely seriously and therefore all products have undergone extremely rigorous testing to ensure that they not only meet regulatory standards, but in most instances go far beyond. These case studies cover the performance of various Kingspan PIR panel systems in different applications including an external arson attack. We have published every single case study that we have had done on our panel systems with the exception of those that the client has asked to remain confidential. In every case, the PIR core panels have been found to have performed very well with no evidence of contribution to fire spread. Independently-researched real fire case studies have proven the performance of Insurer Certified PIR panel systems in the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. Overall Conclusions We have been building up a library of real fire case studies over the years including the following independent fire investigations by Tenos, a leading fire engineering consultancy with global reach, based in the UK: ■ Wharfedale Transport, Ireland; ■ Crude Oil Pool Fire, Netherlands; ■ Clifton Comprehensive School, UK; ■ RA panels did not char significantly outside of the area of the main fire. ■ Dominant influence on fire severity was the contents of the building – fire severity not significantly influenced by the PIR panel. ■ No evidence to indicate that PIR panels increased the risk of fire spread. Kingspan’s sustainability vision is “to be a global leader in sustainable business and establish a leading position in providing sustainable, renewable and affordable best practice solutions for the construction sector.” The achievement is being prioritised at Holywell and Sherburn, UK, which are the largest sites. There are already small-scale renewable energy systems in place, including solar thermal hot water, wind and a large scale photovoltaic array, commissioned in 2011, that is currently delivering over 300,000kWh per annum. We don’t just manufacture and supply sustainable products, we also aim to operate within a sustainable business. A new energy performance contract is also in place at Holywell; partly funded by the UK Green Investment Bank and costing over £700,000, and is currently saving 1,130,000kWh of electricity use per annum. Sustainable Business Model Approximately 20-25% of the steel used in Kingspan insulated panels in Europe is recycled. Currently, core waste is recycled back into the manufacturing process at our site in Ireland, and systems and methodologies for responsibly dealing with waste insulation are in place at the other manufacturing sites. All our sites in the UK are zero waste to landfill. Kingspan Insulated Panels has recently achieved ISO 50001 Energy Management Certification for its Holywell site, in recognition of the continual improvement of energy performance. Sustainable Products Kingspan Insulated Panels has attained ISO 14001 for its sites in the UK and Ireland. All manufacturing sites have achieved BS EN ISO 9001 and the majority also have OHSAS / ISO 18001. All key suppliers are either working towards ISO 9001 / 14001 and OHSAS 18001, or have already achieved it. At Kingspan Insulated Panels, we provide both materials and services that can help a project to be more cost effective, sustainable and gain higher ratings in the different environmental assessment methods. In 2007, Kingspan was the first insulated panel manufacturer to put its key roof and wall panel products through a formal and independently assessed Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) by the Building Research Establishment and achieved a top A+ rating according to the Green Guide to Specification. These ratings were reconfirmed in 2010 and are currently being reassessed in combination with plans to certify a larger part of our product range. In 2012, Kingspan Insulated Panels became the first manufacturer of insulated metal cladding systems to be certified to the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard, which is designed to provide a robust, objective analysis of a company’s carbon emissions. In 2011, Kingspan Group embarked on a Net-Zero initiative. The target is to have all Kingspan facilities running on renewable power by 2020, with an interim target of achieving 50% by 2016. Kingspan Insulated Panels’ full range of products can make a significant contribution to achieve higher ratings in building certification methodologies such as BREEAM and LEED. Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions With the ever increasing demand for sustainable buildings and building methods, it is becoming essential to take into consideration what the options are at an early stage of the project. Introduction Why do we need Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions? The UK needs Cost Optimal Energy Saving Buildings to minimise the financial impact of rising fuel costs in buildings, therefore it is essential to reduce lifetime operational costs. For over 40 years, we at Kingspan Insulated Panels have pushed the boundaries of the building envelope, creating the world’s most advanced high performance systems. With a holistic building design that concentrates on the design of the whole building, rather than just focusing on a specific area such as the building envelope only, it is possible to design more accurately, more efficiently and at optimum cost. For example, enhancing the building envelope provides the opportunity to downsize internal building services, thereby often reducing the capital cost for the whole building when costs associated to the reduced plant size exceed the costs associated to the enhanced envelope. Through our knowledge, and innovation and world-class technical expertise, we can provide future-proofed Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions to help architects and design teams realise affordable, energy efficient and sustainable buildings. Holistic Building Design Inputs Cooling system Building orientation Geographical location Demands Building envelope Hot water system Heating system Auxillary (different zones) Lighting design What are Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions? (fans, pumps, etc) Low / zero carbon technologies Kingspan Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions can offer: ■ Less Capital Cost: Kingspan has proven that the integration of an enhanced building envelope, with a holistic design approach that identifies the most cost-effective whole building specification, often results in a reduction in capital cost. Building designs that reduce both whole building capital cost and lifecycle operational cost. Buildings designed with Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions provide many compelling advantages to the different property stakeholders; they consume less energy, they emit less carbon dioxide and they are environmentally responsible over their lifetime, but the perception is that these types of buildings carry substantial capital cost premiums. ■ Higher Return on Investment: Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions that have a capital cost uplift provide significant operational cost reductions and offer rapid return on investment. ■ Lifetime Operational Cost Savings: Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions feature envelope systems that maintain their thermal performance over time, limiting the occupiers’ exposure to escalating operating costs over the lifetime of the building. Kingspan Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions can deliver minimum capital and lifetime operation costs for a building. ■ Future-proofed Buildings: Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions drive higher rental income, maximise occupancy levels, reduce operating costs, enhance asset value and minimise the risk of rising fuel costs to provide ‘future-proofed’ buildings. ■ Enhanced BREEAM/LEED Ratings: Additional BREEAM / LEED credits can be achieved, enhancing green building credentials and providing market differentiation. 20 Exemplar Case Studies Introduction Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions Kingspan Insulated Panels has carried out extensive research in conjunction withAECOM, a world leading building design consultancy, to identify the positive impact of more efficient building envelopes for buildings in various parts of the UK. Return on Investment (ROI) is a performance measure used to evaluate the efficiency of an investment, or to compare the efficiency of a number of different investments. To calculate ROI, the benefit (return) of an investment (net of initial cost of investment) is divided by the cost of the investment; the result is expressed as a percentage or a ratio. Each scenario was calculated using three starting building fabric standards: backstop, notional and enhanced. ■ Backstop: Less Insulation Roof = 0.25W/m2K / Wall = 0.35W/m2K ■ Notional: Medium Insulation Roof = 0.18W/m2K / Wall = 0.26W/m2K Net Present Value (NPV) is the difference between the present value of cash inflows and the present value of cash outflows. NPV is used in capital budgeting to analyse the profitability of an investment or project. ■ Enhanced: More Insulation oof = 0.15W/m2K / Wall = 0.20W/m2K R Results are dependent on various parameters such as building type, location, orientation, etc. Internal Rate of Return (IRR) is the discount rate often used in capital budgeting that makes the net present value of all cash flows from a particular project equal to zero. Generally speaking, the higher a project’s internal rate of return, the more desirable it is to undertake the project. As such, IRR can be used to rank several prospective projects a firm is considering. Assuming all other factors are equal among the various projects, the project with the highest IRR would probably be considered the best and undertaken first. Having applied an envelope, a building specification is assigned based on cost-effectiveness (applying the most cost-effective changes first) to develop the capital cost model. Lifetime operational costs are then calculated. It is then possible to recognise financial benefits of various building specifications over others in terms of Net Present Value (NPV), Return on Investment (ROI) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). For further information see: http://www.kingspanpanels.co.uk/why-kingspan/value-proposition/ 21 Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions We have now entered into an era of energy efficiency and financial returns, where energy saving buildings are designed, constructed, operated and maintained with minimal cost. The envelope must offer thermal performance suitable to the local climate but it is not just the building envelope that must be considered at this stage, it is important to take a holistic approach to the energy efficiency of internal plant. Important elements such as a building’s daylighting design must always be carefully considered, taking location and climate into account. Kingspan’s daylighting systems can be incorporated into building designs to further decrease energy consumption, by reducing the need for electric lighting. Energy efficiency must always be addressed before considering renewable energy. In order to achieve a cost optimal energy saving building design it is essential that annual energy consumption is minimised before incorporating low or zero carbon technologies. Taking a holistic approach, the envelope and internal heating and cooling system should be designed simultaneously while always considering cost. The size of the heating and cooling system depends very much on the building envelope and it has been found that improving the efficiency of the building envelope reduces the size of internal systems and hence reduces their cost. This also results in heating / cooling energy consumption reduction. This approach often results in a lower capital cost for the building envelope and heating / cooling system combined. “By applying Kingspan’s threestep process of EnvelopeFirst & Optimised Building Services, Insulate & Generate and Net-Zero Energy Buildings, it is possible to achieve a Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solution.” STEP 1 Route to Net-Zero Energy Buildings Energy efficient internal building services with intelligent controls should also be included at this stage. Kingspan Insulated Panels’ building envelope products and solutions provide enhanced thermal conductivity with low air permeability to ensure thermal performance robustness throughout the building’s lifecycle. Our wide range of Kingspan roof, wall and façade insulated panel systems, including daylighting, come in various colours and finishes to suit any design requirement. EnvelopeFirst & Optimised Building Services The first step, EnvelopeFirst & Optimised Building Services, optimises the insulation, airtightness, heat loss / gain and daylight design of the building envelope for its intended life, whilst ensuring the building’s services are geared to energy efficient operation. It is of utmost importance that the building envelope is appropriate before embarking on other energy efficient measures as the building envelope tends to last the life of the building. It is mandatory to get the design correct to ensure low operational cost for the entire lifetime of the building. Step 1 EnvelopeFirst & Optimised Building Services Building envelope optimisation plus building services geared to efficient operations. 22 Route to Net-Zero Energy Buildings Introduction Cost Optimal Energy Saving Building Solutions STEP 2 Insulate & Generate - Integrated LZC Technologies STEP 3 The second step is called ‘Insulate & Generate’. At this stage, additional enhancements to the building fabric and / or internal duct / pipework are introduced and low or zero carbon technology systems are added to further reduce the overall energy footprint. Low or zero carbon technologies such as Kingspan Roof Mounted PV Systems are perfectly suited to help reduce energy bills for buildings with large roof space. Net-Zero Energy Buildings The final step is called Net-Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs). The purpose of this stage is to ensure that the overall annual performance of the building balances out. This usually involves enhancing the renewable energy producing technologies incorporated in the building, and may require investment in off-site energy saving schemes called ‘allowable solutions’ in the UK. Having applied the steps above to reach a given target, it is necessary to calculate the lifetime operational cost by incorporating the cost associated with rising fuel costs and replacement of internal plant (keeping in mind an improved fabric will reduce the cost of internal plant). If the process is completed to reach different carbon targets, it is then possible to calculate a Return on Investment (ROI), Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). Likewise, Kingspan Sol-Air, a thermal air heating insulated panel system that channels passive solar heat gain into the heating system hence reducing its energy consumption, is perfectly suited for buildings with fresh air requirements. Other buildings may require different solutions, including solar thermal, wind and even heat pump technologies, all of which are available from one of Kinspan’s other divisions. The energy saving solutions selected at this stage depend on a number of variables, including cost effectiveness, building type, internal demands, orientation, geographical location and climate. Kingspan Energy, a sub-division of Kingspan Insulated Panels, offers businesses and building owners the opportunity to maximise the use of the roof space thus reducing their energy costs and enhancing the value of their property without the need for any upfront capital outlay. These systems are guaranteed for 25 years with lifetime monitoring and maintenance. “Kingspan provides global, sustainable, energy saving building solutions for all sectors.” Backed by over 40 years of technical experience, rooted in customer service, and steeped in industry knowledge, we are leading the way on the journey towards a collective sustainable future, and are perfectly placed to support customers, the industry and society as a whole as we all progress towards a true net-zero energy future. Step 2 Step 3 Insulate & Generate Net-Zero Energy Buildings EnvelopeFirst & Optimised Building Services plus integrated low or zero carbon technologies. Insulate & Generate plus renewable energy enhancements & / or off-site energy saving schemes. 23 24 Standing Seam Systems Standing Seam Systems A unique high performance standing seam insulated roof panel system offering premium aesthetic and that is zipped on-site to create a weathertight solution. 25 Standing Seam Systems KingZip IP KS500/1000 ZIP IP St. Thomas Primary School, Swansea, UK KingZip IP is a unique insulated standing seam roof panel, which gives a secret-fix appearance unrivalled in the composite panel market. Sol-Air works by absorbing incident solar radiation and converting it, through the medium of air, into heat energy.* Product Features Profile: Five Crown Fixing detail:Through-fix Metal type:Steel Colours:Most efficient colour is Kingspan XL Forté Symphony Anthracite. Other colours are available on request Application: Vertical application Lengths:Lengths from 1.8m up to 15m Cover width:1000mm Environmental rating:May be Green Guide A+ rated, subject to project specific assessment Fire rating: LPCB approved Product compatibility:Integrates seamlessly with Five Crown insulated wall panel Seals: * Also available as perforated single skin version (Sol-Air Transpired), featuring as an additional building envelope layer. 56 Site-applied side and end lap sealant Insulated Roof & Wall Panels Sol-Air KS1000 SA How it works? Sun shining on the outer skin of a Sol-Air panel causes the collector temperature to increase. This heat is transferred to the air inside the collector void. Insulated Roof & Wall Panels Low energy fans incorporated within the HVAC or building ventilation system create a negative pressure, which draws external air into the collector. As the air travels towards the top of the collector void it continues to absorb heat energy before exiting at the top of the elevation. Heated air is transferred from the collector into the building via the HVAC system or alternatively through a high level ventilation system. An automatic control system with in-built temperature sensors constantly monitors the collector supply air temperature and modulates fan power to ensure the collector is operating to an optimum efficiency and effectively supplementing the building heating and ventilation needs. FAÇADE & ROOF SYSTEMS BENCHMARK BENCHMARK ENGINEERED FAÇADE SYSTEMS INTEGRATED FAÇADE SYSTEMS BENCHMARK Engineered Façade Systems comprises three engineered systems that have been designed to display a large range of metallic and non-metallic façade options. BENCHMARK is proud to present its latest and most innovative product within its range, BENCHMARK Kreate, a fully integrated cassettes façade system using insulated panel technology. Fully bespoke and completely inspirational, BENCHMARK Kreate is made to order to the specifier’s free design. Engineered Systems: the range comprises three preengineered insulated panel systems, BENCHMARK Konnect, BENCHMARK Karrier and BENCHMARK Wall Liner, all of which utilise the same advanced insulated panel technology to deliver high performance envelopes. Once the panel systems are installed the building is fully weathertight, allowing internal fit-out to commence and removing the façade from the critical path. The relevant secondary support/railing system required for the chosen façade is fixed directly to the outer skin of the panel systems, removing all risk of cold bridging. The three systems will vary in span, railing systems and façade options. It is the first integrated insulated panel and aluminium façade system of its kind, offering a world of benefits compared to traditional rainscreen systems. Each high performance insulated panel is made of multiple cassettes with smooth rounded corners that are cleverly integrated into each panel. The façade’s design is truly bespoke, in terms of the amount of cassettes, their arrangement along with their individual size and colour. The cassettes are finished in a post powder coating, which is available in any BS or RAL colour (chromide-free finish with Qualicoat assurance). Façade Options: BENCHMARK offers a wide choice of façades in colours and textures without any limitation. The product range includes metallic, glass, ceramic, fibre cement, HPL and timber. As a forward-thinking company, we are constantly investing in new technologies and today we are very pleased to provide our customers with services such as Building Energy Modelling (BEM) and Building Information Modelling (BIM). Each course covers as much as possible to provide best value for the customer. The team will also provide training on customers’ own premises. All training is recorded and all participants are issued with certificates of completion and compliance to prove that they have the required skills to install Kingspan Insulated Panels products. BIM pulls together multiple data streams to allow a design team to generate a comprehensive virtual 3D model of a building. This means that accurate specification, costing and quantities of materials can be identified, and better facilities management in future maintenance and operation of the building is ensured. We have recently released BIM objects for all our core products, in all the file types required for the main CAD packages such as Archicad, Bentley and Revit as well as the native IFC format. The Kingspan Field Service team will carry out follow up assessments on site, checking that the training has been assimilated and that installations are being carried out correctly.
