The LED Show will drive luminaire
and specifcation discussion
We offer our special Fall 2014 issue of Illumination in Focus as a collection of articles that discuss the latest trends in lamp and luminaire development and how such products are being applied by designers and specifers. At the same time we have integrated the show guide
for The LED Show, at which you will fnd a conference and exhibitor base that will deliver a
message very much in line with the content in this issue. Let’s review both our content offering and what you can expect at the event.
The show guide kicks off on p. 19. The conference agenda will deliver insight on key developments that range from the light sources to applications. While you lighting designers
and specifers are focused on projects, we believe that the transition to LED sources requires
that you have a complete understanding of the implications of the new light source. So expect a fast-paced three days (including workshops) along with plenty of networking opportunities with your peers.
Particularly in the specifcation area, I’ll highlight some learning opportunities at the event.
You will have the chance to hear from the leaders of all of the major market-transformation programs such as Energy Star. There will be comprehensive discussion on color quality. Designers will present notable lighting projects from which you can learn. Controls will be a key
part of the program. And we will have a forward look into
lighting technology.
As for our issue content, you will fnd some very interesting material. We convened a roundtable to discuss some
of the trends in lamp and luminaire design. The discussion
ranges from market realities to the LED light source technology to the challenges the lighting industry faces in dimming, color tuning, and control.
Of course, your everyday work in projects is greatly impacted by regulatory guidelines
and market-transformation programs. We decided to focus on the toughest regulatory environment that you might face on upcoming projects; on p. 11 you will fnd what is essentially
a quick-start guide to understanding the requirements. Again you will fnd complementary
information at The LED Show.
Our cover, meanwhile, is project focused and covers the annual Cooper Source Awards
program. The accompanying feature article on p. 7 provides a compelling visual presentation
of some of the top projects in the industry along with an explanation of the goals of the design teams.
We hope you enjoy this issue of Illumination in Focus, and fnd The LED Show guide interesting. Moreover, we hope to see you in Los Angeles where the conference will be convenient
to the greater Southern California community of lighting designers and specifers.
I’d also like to welcome your input on future special issues of Illumination in Focus. We
would like to hear directly from designers and specifers as to what information you need.
Moreover, we need more of you to volunteer and contribute feature articles to our publication. E-mail me at mauryw@pennwell.com. ⊡

RETROFIT
Healthcare provider
slashes energy costs
with LED retrofit
The ThedaCare Health System located in Wisconsin has
been a leader in sustainability initiatives and late last year
also recognized that outdoor area lighting at a number of
its facilities was in need of an upgrade — both due to excessive maintenance requirements and uneven light quality. The organization has upgraded two of its facilities to
solid-state lighting (SSL). The healthcare provider projects
$40,000 annually in electrical and maintenance savings
based on its first outdoor SSL projects.
The ThedaCare outdoor areas and parking lots have
been lit by a mix of metal-halide (MH) and high-pressure
sodium (HPS) lighting with the result being non-uniform
light levels and disparate color temperatures as the top
photo illustrates. “Security staff was very concerned about
light levels for safety,” said Steve Jencks, construction project manager for ThedaCare. “They wanted to make sure the
new lighting would provide better visibility both on-site, as
well as through security cameras.”
Energy conservation was also a concern. “From my perspective, healthcare organizations must lead the way in reducing fossil fuels,” said ThedaCare sustainability leader
Paul Linzmeyer. “The first thing we are working on is to reduce demand. If we reduce demand, that is less pollution
going into the environment. While some of sustainability
work is about saving money, it is really about reducing the
amount of greenhouse gases going into the environment.”
The organization turned its attention to two of more

than 30 hospitals and facilities in Wisconsin. The Theda
Clark and Appleton Medical Centers (AMC) have parking
lots measuring 861,000 and 916,000 ft2, respectively. The
Theda Clark facility is also adjacent to a residential area and
had generated complaints about light pollution.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING
ThedaCare partnered with Élan
Lighting to evaluate the impact that a
lighting retrofit might have on the operational costs. The analysis revealed that
lighting would deliver relatively quick
return on investment (ROI) and LED
lighting was the most efficient option.
“LEDs are the best solution right now for
lighting in general,” said Mark Zelten,
application and sales manager at Élan
Lighting. “It is certainly going to be the
light source for decades to come.”
ThedaCare and Élan Lighting worked
together to select the Acuity D-Series
LED luminaires from the Lithonia Lighting brand. The project primarily relied
on the area lights for outdoor parking
lots, although it also includes lesser numbers of D-Series wall packs, flood lights,
and parking garage luminaires.
The lumen output and uniform beam
of the LED products allowed the organization to reduce the total number of
luminaires. At the Theda Clark facility,
60 LED luminaires replaced 84 legacy
fixtures.
Still, the lighting is much improved
and the light-spill problem was also
mitigated. “You can see a vast difference
between newly lit lots with a more even
distribution, and the yellow from the
old lights that cast an ugly glow,” explained Jencks.
The healthcare provider projects that
its will save $89,500 in energy costs and
$58,600 in maintenance costs over ten
years. The LED lighting is projected for
10,000 hours of life and projected ROI is
five years. ⊡
GE Lighting delivers next-generation
LED-based canopy fixtures

Illumination In Focus www.illuminationinfocus.com
GE Lighting has announced the Evolve LED Canopy ECBA Light with
a new configuration that provides glare-free, uniform light distribution.
Available in 4000-, 8000-, and 13,500-lm versions and in 4000K or
5000K CCTs, the fixture family targets applications such as gas stations,
bank drive-through windows, restaurants, pharmacies, and truck stops.
“GE designed the ECBA fixture to have a recessed light engine and
a premium, diffused light source,” said Abby Mosher, product manager at GE Lighting. “By having the LEDs recessed within the fixture,
combined with GE’s reflective optic technology,
the light is not pixelated. Rather, it provides an optimal photometric pattern,
which provides a uniform, clean light for
customers under the canopy.”
The diffuser lens is essentially the lowest point on the luminaire as it is mounted
under a canopy. The channels around the
periphery are designed for air movement and
thermal management. Those channels are angled upward from the diffuser or light-emitting surface. GE characterizes the light engine as
being recessed, but that characterization is relative to the diffuser and not the
surrounding housing.
The fixture aligns with a trend that we have been following since
LightFair International 2013. At that fair, Cree announced the CPY250
fixture that utilizes a diffuser to reduce glare (http://bit.ly/1q5l0PO). Prior
to that point, most LED-based canopy luminaires exposed the individual LED sources, generally coupled to total internal reflection lenses for
beam control, because outdoor fixtures needed all of the lumens that
LEDs could produce and a secondary optic would add losses. The bulk
of roadway and parking-area luminaires still expose the LEDs. But the
lower mounting height under canopies increases the glare issue and uniform lighting is more important.
The mechanical design is optimized for thermal performance and
that allows GE to rate the fixture for 60,000 hours of life to L95 or 95%
of initial lumen output. The design also includes an accessible “power
cavity” that enables maintenance on the driver if required. ⊡

designs stand out
in Source Awards
Commercial applications dominated the
37th annual Cooper Source Awards announced at LightFair International this
year, although one very compelling residential application made the cut as well.
LED sources were more prevalent in the
entries this year, although legacy sources
still played a role where warm, highCRI lighting was required. And compelling, innovative design concepts and implementation overshadow the products
used in the projects. Adaptive and programmatic controls played a prominent

part in several of the projects.
For background on the Source competition and a comparison with prior
award winners, see our feature article
on the program from 2013 (http://bit.
ly/1kWlUSJ). The commercial entries
this year feature arguably more dramatic projects and several notable outdoor lighting designs.
The top award winners include the

Seattle, WA; and the Morningstar residence located in Aspen, CO with design
work done by Robert Singer & Associates of Basalt, CO. We found the Honorable Mention Nashville, TN Omni Hotel project, by GWA Lighting of Naberth,
PA, very compelling — leading to its position on the cover of this issue. Moreover, Award of Recognition projects at
the Los Angeles International (LAX) airport and the Cuyahoga County Public Library in Garfeld Heights, OH were
worthy recipients of recognition.
Restoration Hardware
The Restoration Hardware entry was notable for the lighting design and its status as an iconic building along Boston’s fashionable Newbury Street retail
and restaurant district. The building
originally housed the Museum of Natural History dating to 1863 and now
serves as the fagship retail location for
Restoration Hardware, yet it retains museum-like qualities indoors and out.
Indeed, the outdoor treatment is especially compelling. The designers stated
the intent to create a “light from nowhere”
effect on the building façade; as Fig. 1 illustrates, the mission was accomplished
with all of the exterior fxtures concealed
from view. On second foor ledges, Cooper io Line Series 2.0 symmetric luminaires, with a narrow beam distribution,
ensure dark-sky compliance while grazing columns and highlighting cornices.
Asymmetric versions of the fxtures on
the second and third foors highlight balconies and windows while warmer IRiS
P3LED sources inside make some of the
merchandise visible from outside.
Morningstar residence
Moving to the residential winner, controls were a key part of the design story.
The project implemented a whole-house
dimming system. More signifcantly, the
controls include preprogrammed scenes
to allow the residents simple manipulation of the multiple layers of lighting
used throughout. Each room includes a
control panel allowing for scene selection or customized settings.
The nearby photo (Fig. 2) depicts the
great room in the home. The steel freplace was highlighted with vertical LED
fxtures from behind, making the freplace appear to foat in space away from
the stone wall. Uplights graze the stone
from below while IRiS P3MR downlights highlight the upper portions of the
wall and the seating areas.
Omni Hotel
Still, it was the Omni Hotel and Convention Center project that most impressed
our staff despite not winning a top award
from Cooper. In part, the broad scope of
the hotel project is eye-catching because

The project also utilizes a network and
controls throughout the facility. Indeed,
the design includes preprogrammed dimming scenes in all of the public spaces for
different times of the day. Each area also
includes local controls that can override
the programmed settings. The controls
were important both for guest comfort
and a reduction in energy usage.
Awards of Recognition
Moving to the two Awards of Recognition,
each deserves attention for vastly different reasons. The LAX project in the curbside area of the Tom Bradley International
Airport was designed by Horton Lees
Brogden Lighting Design of Culver City,
CA. The project includes LED-based light

roadway. But it’s the sculptural roadway
lighting that really stands out as both
functional and artistic (Fig. 4).
The design team worked with Cooper to deliver a custom product with an
asymmetrical look that delivers the required lighting to both upper and lower
roadways. The team specifed the custom fberglass pole confgurations and Yshaped mounting arms to integrate Cooper Linear LED LightBAR modular light
engines. The pole system doubles as a
heat sink, and the result delivers the desired artistic look and what the designers
termed a “swoosh of light.”
Controls, meanwhile,
were especially critical in the
Cuyahoga library project designed by Tec Studio of Columbus, OH. The new 30,000ft2 branch was designed for

Lighting control
requirements will
drive building
energy reduction
Buildings consume nearly 40% of the
world’s energy, and in the past 20 years
the building industry has focused on
sustainability, effciency, and practical
energy-saving solutions for both new
construction and retrofts. Energy for
lighting represents a disproportionately
large share of building energy consumption. The lighting industry is making
steady progress toward sustainability via
effcient LED-based products and networks and adaptive controls. Still, lighting designers and specifers are faced
with meeting ever-more-stringent regulatory standards for lighting projects.
We will discuss the most demanding requirements here — particularly in terms
of required controls and the ASHRAE
90.1-2013 requirements.
As the building industry moves slowly
toward zero net energy — the goal of the
Architecture 2030 (architecture2030.org)
program and key in the roadmap of the
US Department of Energy (DOE) — the
industry is recognizing that lighting controls play a crucial role in energy conservation. According to the DOE, lighting is
by far the largest end user of electricity in
commercial buildings. It consumes 38%
of a building’s total electricity use — approximately the same as space heating,
cooling, ventilation, offce equipment,
and computers combined, according to
a US Energy Information Administration
(http://1.usa.gov/1vh5jNC)
study published in 2008.

occupant comfort and productivity. They provide fexible
control over the lighting in a space,
and support energy savings by reducing
the amount of power or time the lighting system is in use. Energy is the multiplicative product of, in this case, lighting power and the power-on time during
which it is used. Lighting controls can
reduce both power and time.
Energy codes and standards
One of the nation’s top three building
energy codes and standards — Part 6 of
Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations, the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and ANSI/ASHRAE/
IES Standard 90.1 — is used by nearly
every state as the basis for local building
energy codes. These provide the minimum acceptable energy performance
requirements for new construction or
major renovations of commercial buildings. They refect the importance of using lighting controls to conserve energy.
They have similar mandatory lighting
control requirements for new construction or major renovation projects.
Sometimes referred to as America’s
primary commercial energy code, the
latest version of ANSI/ASHRAE/IES
Standard 90.1 was published in October
2013 and is known as
Standard 90.1-2013. The American
Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and
Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)
partners with the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) to produce the
standard. It provides the minimum requirements for the energy-effcient design of buildings, other than low-rise residential buildings.
Rita Harrold, director of technology
for the IES, said achieving the stringency
goals established for the 2013 standard
presented a challenge in reducing the requirements for lighting. “While interior
lighting power densities (LPD) were reevaluated and most lowered, there continues to be an ongoing concern about
maintaining quality of lighting installations for occupant satisfaction and comfort while achieving energy savings,” said
Harrold. “The focus in the 2013 standard, therefore, was not just on lowering LPDs but on fnding ways to achieve
savings by adding more controls and
daylighting requirements as well as including lighting limits for exterior applications based on jurisdictional zoning”
ASHRAE 90.1-2013 and California Title 24
The ASHRAE website is an excellent resource for existing standards such as
ASHRAE 90.1-2013 along with future work by the organization (https://www.ashrae.
org/home). Indeed, work is underway on new standards. You will also fnd resources
such as handbooks and compliance forms for all of the organization’s standards.
Meanwhile, California Title 24 guidelines are often ahead of ASHRAE requirements
and foreshadow future ASHRAE guidelines (http://www.energy.ca.gov/title24/). The
Title 24 escalations range from requirements of more effcient lighting to more demanding control levels to even the type of projects covered by the standard. For example, 2013 standards require compliance even when a commercial retroft affects
only 10% of the luminaires in a building. — Maury Wright

Lutron stairwell fxtures support dimming
capabilities and wireless interfaces to
allow sensor-based autonomous or
programmatic controls.
Focus on ASHRAE 90.1-2013
Following are some of the mandatory
lighting control requirements in the new
Standard 90.1-2013.
Local control. Each interior space
must have at least one lighting control
device (such as a manual switch or a
dimmer) to control the lighting in that
space. Each control device shall be readily accessible and located so the occupants can see the controlled lighting and
can only override any scheduled lighting
shut-off by a maximum of two hours.
Automatic shut-off or scheduled
shut-off. Lighting in these spaces must
be automatically shut off, typically using vacancy sensors, within 20 minutes
of vacancy:
• classrooms and lecture halls
• conference, meeting, and training
rooms
• employee lunch and break rooms
• storage and supply rooms between
50 ft2 and 1000 ft2
• rooms used for document copying
and printing
• offce spaces up to 250 ft2
• restrooms
• dressing, locker, and ftting rooms
Lighting in all other spaces must have
either an automatic lighting shut-off control (i.e., occupancy sensor) that turns off
the lights within 20 minutes of vacancy,
or scheduled lighting shut-off during periods when the space is scheduled to be
unoccupied typically using a time switch
(i.e., timeclock).
www.illuminationinfocus.com
Illumination In Focus
Manual-on or partial automatic-on.
Lighting in most spaces must have either a manual-on lighting control or an
automatic-on lighting control confgured to turn the lighting on to no more
than a 50% light level. This effectively
requires manual-on/automatic-off controls or up to 50% auto-on capability for
automatic controls. These controls also
turn the lights off automatically after occupants leave the space. The controls are
commercially available and referred to
as “vacancy sensors” or “multi-level” occupancy sensors. Automatic-on to full is
allowed in some spaces, including public
corridors and stairwells, restrooms, primary building entrance areas and lobbies, and areas where manual-on operation would endanger safety or security.
Bi-level lighting control. Most areas
in commercial buildings must provide
at least one light level between 30% and
70% of full lighting power in addition
to off. This can be done by continuous
or stepped dimming, or stepped/dual
switching of luminaires or lamps, while
maintaining a reasonably uniform level
of illumination throughout the area.
Automatic daylight responsive control for side and top lighting. An automatic reduction in lighting power in
areas where daylight can help illuminate the space will be required in most
areas that are side-lit with windows or
top-lit with skylights. General lighting
in daylight areas using more than 150W
of power shall be controlled using continuous dimming or with at least one
control point between 50% and 70% of
design lighting power, a second control
point between 20% and 40% of design
lighting power, and a third control point
that turns off all the controlled lighting.
Automatic partial-off. Lighting in
stairwells and corridors shall be reduced by at least 50% after 20 minutes
of all occupants leaving the space.
Exterior lighting control. Permanently installed outdoor lighting must
be controlled by a photosensor or astronomical time switch (timeclock) that
automatically turns off lighting during
daylight hours. The new standard also
requires that façade and landscape lighting be turned off between midnight and
6 AM, or in conjunction with business
opening and closing times. Other outdoor lighting, such as advertising signage, must operate at 70% percent (or
lower) between midnight and 6 AM, or
in conjunction with business closing
and opening times, or when no activity
has been detected for 15 minutes.

lighting control (automatically reduced
lighting power when daylight is present and/or during periods of vacancy),
energy monitoring (to monitor wholebuilding energy usage and breakout

Lastly, the standards provides additional lighting power allowances for

minimum mandatory controls for that
space. The energy use attributed to
these allowances represents typically

DC-power grids help deliver zero net energy
Controls, daylighting, and effcient light sources are key in the drive toward zero-netenergy buildings but power distribution can come into play as well. We recently examined DC-power-grid technology and a specifc project at a Florida bank branch offce. Indeed, the case study demonstrates how all of the above technologies can be
combined in the quest to reduce both lighting energy use and the energy used by
other building systems including HVAC and IT departments. — Maury Wright

one half of the expected energy savings from these advanced lighting controls. The additional lighting power allowance may be used anywhere in the
building, not just in the space with the
additional controls.
Lighting controls are vital components for helping us meet the increasingly stringent energy code
requirements — requirements which
help our nation meet its energy conservation goals in an energy-starved world.

Illumination In Focus
While it’s clear that the lighting industry is rapidly transitioning to LED
sources for most mainstream product types, little else remains clear as
what has been a staid industry rides
the semiconductor rollercoaster for the
frst time. With The LED Show looming and solid-state lighting (SSL) vendors preparing their wares for exhibit,
we asked a number of industry executives to share their views on the state
of lighting technology. The following
roundtable includes insight into areas
such as dimming and controls while
also covering market developments and
the evolving LED light sources.
Because we hoped to discuss both
the light source technology and developments in lamps and luminaires, we
specifcally looked for participants with
knowledge of both the enabling component and SSL sectors. The participants included Chris Bohler, director
of innovation in Eaton’s Cooper Lighting Business; Uwe Thomas, vice president of product management at LED
Engin; Brian Terao, director of solidstate lighting for Osram Opto Semiconductors; David Bay, corporate engineer
at Osram Sylvania; and Gary Trott, vice
president of product strategy at Cree.

Illumination in Focus: What are the
most important market and technology
trends that you see in mid-2014 in regard to LED-based lamp or luminaire
design? We’d like to hear about topics ranging from product design strategies to features of the end product to the
enabling components and technologies
embedded in SSL products.
Gary Trott: It really feels like — for a
lot of the big applications such as residential and commercial lamps, street
lights, area lights, downlights, and troffers — that LEDs are a no-brainer now.
The adoption is happening at such a
rapid rate both for us and the entire industry. There are so many companies
heavily engaged. I was on a long drive
today and saw a somewhat rundown
convenience store; and I look up and see
one of our CPY250 LED canopy fxtures.
When I see that, I know LED lighting
is mainstream. It’s no longer a question
of “Should we do it?” but “Which LED
product should I use?”
Chris Bohler: Historically, SSL penetration has primarily been driven by

Trott: Intelligence and networks were
mentioned here. There’s a real change
where the lighting industry used to be
all about hardware. Control systems
were challenging to use and infexible.
When you work on the software behind
the light as hard as the light itself, you
can enable some pretty amazing things.
Consider what we did with Smartcast.
Our biggest effort on that project was
dealing with bits and bytes. The way
that you can really enable a better end
use experience is through software and
what the lights can do beyond just delivering light or in how the lights are commissioned and set up. We took hours,
days, or weeks out of the commissioning process relative to a complex control
system. The industry has only begun
to touch the edge of the convergence of
hardware and software.
IIF: Dimming is often considered an inherent strength of LED-based lighting
products, especially when digital controls, as opposed to phase controls, are
involved. But the industry has no standards for light-level output relative to
settings on a dimmer. Moreover, many
products lack dimming granularity at
the bottom end of the scale where lowlight adjustment is very important in applications such as hospitality. How big of

New Frontiers in LED Lighting – Today and
in the Coming Decade
LED lighting adoption has accelerated rapidly in the past
several years; however, total overall conversion is still less than
1% of available sockets. Growth has been slowed by many
factors including market inertia, risk aversion, and because the
economic justifcation was not there for many applications.
This discussion will demonstrate how simple math and history
prove that incumbent technologies should no longer be used in
the majority of applications. Real world application case studies of LED lighting installations will show how the technology is
being rapidly adopted in categories that were once considered
impossible for LED lighting. These applications demonstrate
astonishing economic and human advantages for applications ranging from 1000W and higher replacements to simple
A-lamps.
SPEAKER: Eric Haugaard, director of product
technology, Cree
Eric Haugaard is the director of product technology for Cree Lighting, a position he has held for the
past eight years. Previously, Eric was engineering
manager of new product development for 11 years,
and mechanical design and product development engineer for

technology programs to diverse audiences throughout the world,
including a strong focus on LED luminaire technologies. Eric
holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering
from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, with Post-Baccalaureate Program studies completed at NASA/Ames Research

Quantifying the Value of SSL
Standardization
Supporting the development of SSL standards—including
minimum performance, communication and safety standards,
methods of measurement, voluntary specifcations, and related
technical memoranda—may appear to some as fnancial liabilities providing little beneft. At times, the costs associated with
developing standards may appear to outweigh the perceived
benefts derived from these efforts. However, make no mistake—SSL standards are valuable assets beneftting all lighting
market actors including end users, enabling ever-accelerating
adoption of LED technology. Associated with more than half a
billion dollars in annual fnancial incentives for lighting products,
programs like ENERGY STAR® and the DesignLights Consortium® normally receive the credit for creating standards-related
cash fow. However, as this presentation will explore, it is the
industry standards referenced by those programs—existing
and forthcoming—that are creating enormous value for the industry. With a unique perspective from the voluntary program/
regulatory side of the industry, the presenter will make a case
for further investment and active participation in SSL standards
development and maintenance.
SPEAKER: Chad Stalker, regional marketing manager,
Philips Lumileds
As the regional marketing manager for Philips
Lumileds Mr. Stalker is responsible for working
directly with fxture manufacturers, lighting designers and other market infuencers to support the
adoption of SSL technologies. He has been working in the LED lighting industry for over ten years. Prior to joining
Philips he worked in a variety of sales, marketing and technical
roles with LED and lighting companies such as Luminus Devices,
OSRAM and Color Kinetics. He has been directly involved across
the lighting value chain from working on new LED component
solutions, to partnering with fxture manufacturers to bring
LED-based lighting solutions into the market, to supporting LED

The Need for More Collaboration Between
Manufacturers and Lighting Designers
Session 2 – Energy Star – DLC –
Certifcations
Manufacturers have largely retroftted legacy products with
LED technology and very few have moved to innovative design
forms and optical patterns to fully enable LED technology. With
the rapid rise of control technologies, the time for a better exchange of ideas for the future of smart lighting is now.
10:45AM – 12:30PM
In contrast to traditional lighting, LED can be imagined into any
form factor. It can be integrated into structural elements and
rendered less intrusive as a fxture source. It can be dimmed
or color controlled to match ambient needs within the environment; institutional or hospitality lighting can change throughout
the course of the day to enable documented health benefts of
proper lighting.
Designers can provide unique input into the future of lighting.
The ability to design lighting that integrates into a uniform architectural design is liberating. Eliminating the reductive logic of
relying on stamped steel and cast bodies is a big step forward.

Product qualifcation and truth-in-labeling programs have a
signifcant role in shaping the SSL market, promoting product
quality and energy effciency and connecting quality products
to utility incentive dollars. However, there is often confusion
about what these programs do, how they work together, and
what distinguishes them from each other. This session will
cover two key SSL product qualifcation programs (U.S. EPA
ENERGY STAR® and the DesignLights Consortium®) and one
truth-in-labeling program (U.S. DOE LED Lighting Facts®).
Representatives from each program will discuss the programs’
objectives, outputs, structure, and testing requirements. A utility representative from ComEd will address the role that these
programs play in informing utility incentive programs as well as
end-user product purchasing decisions. Attendees will leave
the session understanding the three distinct roles that the ENERGY STAR, LED Lighting Facts, and DLC programs play in the
SSL market and how they can each be leveraged by product
manufacturers.

LED Lighting – Creating a Cohesive Design
in Hospitality
Founder and Principal John Sofo of Los Angeles-based design/build frm uses LED lighting in his restaurant and nightclub
projects for theatrical purposes, to meet the ever restrictive
electrical codes, to be environmentally sensitive to electrical
usage, and to sculpt and highlight the architectural design of
the space. Lighting design is an extension of Built’s philosophy:
Sofo and his creative director Sormeh Azad believe that it is
a must to design an entire space from start to fnish without
relying on purchased shelf solutions, always allowing for a cohesive and successful design. Sofo fnds that LED lighting can
be a great asset to the creation of a space. The key to its use is
to not only rely on the light fxture, but to use creative solutions
in its implementation. That way, an LED light can serve many
purposes from utilitarian to theatrical with an ability to create a
range of moods, energies and atmospheres.
SPEAKER: John Sofo, president and founder, Built

I experienced a fickering and corpse-like experience. I shook
my head in disbelief. I had designed my frst commercial LED

same color rendering and dimming problems then...I had to ask
myself, have we come very far?
Integrated Design Philosophy for
Commercial Lighting
Lighting systems were historically designed around a consumable and replaceable lamp. As a consequence, early LED
lighting systems emerged from the established production
infrastructure. These systems incorporated many layers of
components leading to redundancy, costs and often sub-optimal performance. Today, as mainstream commercial lighting
applications begin to adopt LED lighting products, lighting
designers are fnding ways to increase performance and lower
costs by integrating components more effectively along with
raw materials including metal, semiconductor, polymers and
phosphors. This philosophy and design approach and the
resulting improvements in effcacy, light quality and lower costs
promise to lead to rapid adoption and displacement of the last
remaining conventional lighting systems.

Dealing with the LED Misfts and
Rationalizing the LED Application Challenge
White LEDs are formed when a blue LED chip is covered with
a layer of phosphor during the packaging process. The tiniest
variation in the phosphor layer and packaging assembly will
lead to different color temperature and brightness.
Currently, creating a batch of LEDs at a uniform color temperature and brightness is a big challenge because it is not possible
to perfectly control LED properties during mass production.
Thus, the binning of LEDs is a practice used by LED manufacturers to manage the variation of LED performance and color at
the end of the mass production process.
Manufacturers and designers who want more precise control
of color temperature can use traditional methods of cooling
or warming the light such as dichroic flters, theatrical gels or
applied coating. This seminar will present the pros and cons of
these methods.
The DesignLights Consortium Qualifed Products List and
Energy Star’s Qualifed Products program have helped utilities
and specifers to identify the most energy-effcient LED lighting
products, in the categories that both programs have defned;
but what happens if your product does not ft within those nice
and neat predefned categories? What do you do with all of
those outliers and misfts? The Lighting Design Lab in Seattle
offers an alternative LED product qualifcation program that is
specifcally designed to provide a qualifcation vehicle for all
of those misft and niche application products that don’t have
homes in the categories established by the DLC and Energy
Star. Kurt Nielsen, manager of the Lighting Design Lab will
provide an overview of the LDL’s LED product qualifcation
program.
Additionally, while the LED product qualifcation programs have
excelled at identifying the most energy-effcient LED lighting
products, they fall short in helping users determine which products will perform optimally in their specifc application. LDL has
been developing a new LED applications tool that is intended to
aid specifers and utility programs in identifying which products
are appropriate for common applications. Based on criteria
captured from actual lighting projects this new LDL program
aims to reduce much of the guesswork involved in selecting an
appropriate LED product for your application.

Adaptive, or multi-level, lighting controls maximize the effciency, life span and amenity of LED lighting in indoor and outdoor
applications, giving LED technology an advantage over other
sources. LEDs’ tuning and dimming capabilities make them
well suited for use with scheduling, daylight harvesting and occupancy controls.

Wireless networked lighting control systems provide the greatest degrees of fexibility and control, sending and receiving
signals from point to point. This connectivity allows facility
managers to pre-program lighting communication points, make
real-time adjustments, and receive maintenance alerts, all from
a mobile device.
Many networked systems meet California’s latest Title 24, Part
6 requirements for adaptive function and automated demand
response, which support broader adoption. This presentation
will offer case study fndings from indoor and outdoor networked LED lighting installations, including end-user feedback
and energy savings data that demonstrates an up to 90%
reduction in lighting energy use over incumbent systems, depending on application type and occupancy patterns.

edge technology, but are fnding the effort daunting. This is an
accumulation of observations spanning 33 years of lighting and
8 years of the deep dive into solid-state lighting, expressed with
a little humor, while offering insight into bottlenecks that have
detoured many from the super highway of LED revolution into
blind alleys and rough pathways.

Session 7 – Controls & Dimming
2:00PM – 3:30PM
Achieving Perfectly Smooth LED Dimming
Perfectly smooth dimming from dark to full brightness is a
continuing challenge for LED lighting. Increasing bit resolution
doesn’t always help and can actually make things worse. Dimming curves can improve linearity, synchronize light output of
disparate fxtures, or provide smooth and precise control over
an intensity range. What they cannot do is everything at once.
This session explains trade-offs among bit resolution, fade time,
and PWM frame rates. We also revisit the ubiquitous dimming
curve, explaining the effect of changing from incandescent to
solid-state lighting, how the DALI specifcation is problematic
for LEDs, and why power law curves don’t always achieve
desired aesthetics. Suggestions for evaluating and optimizing
dimming control are offered.
Program

Understanding Control and Automation for
LED Lighting
The transition from traditional lighting technology to LED is
old news. People in the lighting business no longer talk about
the “LED revolution”. Today’s revolution, perhaps spurred on
in part by LED technology, is building automation and lighting controls. Like the LED market 6 years ago, the control
market for lighting is now the “wild, wild West”. Multiple
protocols abound, an alphabet soup of abbreviated terms
(DALI, KNX, BACnet, POE....) assault the casual user and various claims of reliability and capability circulate, waiting to be
proven in the marketplace. This talk will touch on the basics
of LED control and the various pros and cons of competing
technologies in the world of lighting automation.
SPEAKER: Greg Galluccio, director, LED Business
Development, Lampholder Product Management, Leviton
Manufacturing Company
Greg Galluccio is director of LED product development and OEM product management for the
Leviton Manufacturing Company. His experience
spans 32 years in the electrical products industry
with expertise in engineering management, new
product development, marketing and business development.
Mr. Galluccio holds a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from
the University of Bridgeport and a Masters in International Business from Northeastern University. His responsibilities include
strategic planning for Leviton’s LED business, as well as new
business development, product management and product innovation for Leviton’s lighting components division.
Session 8 – Technology Ahead
4:00PM – 5:30PM
Where do we go from here?
SSL – The nearly perfect man-made form of lighting. How do
we move forward with technology, aesthetics,
and economics?
SPEAKER: James Highgate, director of LED lighting
technology, PennWell Corporation
Highgate, LC, is a “Forward Thinker” with LED
technologies and a 25 year veteran in the lighting industry. James is the original creator of The
LED Show and has stayed on as a consultant after
PennWell acquired the show. His diverse lighting
background is a result of his experience with theatrical, movie
set, interior, and architectural lighting projects. He has won multiple awards for his architectural lighting designs. James is past
IES Section President and currently IESNA District Chair.
LEDs and Quality of Light … No Need for
Compromises
As LEDs continue to penetrate the lighting market, the major focus on ensuring quality has been on color quality and
luminaire effcacy with little focus on quality of light in the space.
When did we stop caring about good lighting? When did glare
become acceptable? High luminaire effcacy is great but if the
light isn’t going where it is supposed to or worse, going where
it shouldn’t, then what have we gained? This presentation will
take a closer look at architectural LED lighting applications
(good and bad) to see where things went wrong and how we
can make them right.
SPEAKER: Paul Ford, vice president, Design Engineering,
The Lighting Quotient
Paul Ford is the vice president of product design
at The Lighting Quotient in West Haven, CT. The
Lighting Quotient is a manufacturer of premium
indoor and outdoor architectural lighting luminaires. Paul has a BS in Mechanical Engineering
with a minor in Electrical Engineering from the University of New
Hampshire and an executive MBA from the University of New
Haven. He has worked for elliptipar and The Lighting Quotient
for over 24 years as a product designer and has been awarded
22 mechanical and design patents. His latest patent was for an
optical refractor which channels light from an array of LEDs and
shapes it into an asymmetric distribution for illuminating surfaces
evenly.

LED product development: Critical Steps, Best Practices, and Key Activities that Result in
Successful Outcomes
LED product development is much more involved than choosing a good LED, making sure the components are running cool, and
the optics are effciently putting light where you want it to go. This session will help give you the tools to make sure you develop
products that not only meet performance expectations, but business objectives as well. Product engineering is about tradeoffs.
Cost vs. performance. Aesthetics vs. function. But the product development process involves asking, and fnding the answers to
a lot more questions that reach far beyond product engineering.
SPEAKER: Scott Riesebosch, Chief Technology Offcer, CRS Electronics
The LED Show
Mr. Riesebosch has a degree in electrical engineering from McMaster University and has been designing and manufacturing high output LED lighting since 1998 when the frst high output LEDs came to market. He is the CTO of CRS
