Case Study: XL Refrigerators
30 kWp PV system, Pudsey
XL Refrigerators manufacture and
supply commercial deli cabinets
and display refrigerators for a range
of businesses. GMI Energy surveyed
their factory in Pudsey to work out
the site’s suitability for a solar PV
installation. Following initial survey
the design team recommended a
30kWp east / west array that would
perform well on the pitched roof.
30kWp is an appropriate size for XL
Refrigerator’s energy requirements,
meaning they will use 100% of
the electricity produced. Another
advantage in choosing this size
is that it is also on the 30kWp cusp
to be eligible for a deemed export
rate at 50% of production, no matter
how much electricity they actually
use. This export arrangement is
only available for systems that
are 30kWp and under and means
that XL Refrigerators will receive a
further 4.6p per kWh for 50% of the
electricity they use in addition to
the 13p per kWh for all electricity
produced.
The savings are then further
maximised by the fact that XL
Refrigerators are expected to use
100% of the electricity produced by
the system, therefore reducing the
amount of electricity they purchase
from the grid. As electricity prices
rise, these savings will increase.
The 136 panel array was fitted in
just one week in accordance with
GMI’s stringent health and safety
standards. This included extra
precautionary measures such as
roof light covers in addition to
demarked work areas accessed via
a scaffold.
Following project completion, XL
Refrigerators were issued with a
handover document and one year
of complementary monitoring and
maintenance, which includes fault
alerts, a site inspection and regular
reports analysing the performance
of the system by GMI Energy Facilities
Management.
