Exciting News at the Elementary
Art Room News
WOW!!! For the third straight year the elementary art
students have done an art project in conjunction with the Art
to Remember program. Parents and families had their child’s
artwork affixed on something like a plate, ornament, or water
bottle. This year we had great participation. The fundraising
project raised over $2,700. The art department will use this
money for various items and
equipment that may not fit in the
regular classroom budget. Grade
level classrooms will also benefit
from the fundraising money by
purchasing items to enhance and
support student learning. Thank you
so much for your participation and
support.

Principal Nusbaum Interviewed by Second Graders
The second grade class recently completed a reading unit on interviews. One of the activities associated with the reading unit was to
come up with interview questions for the principal. In class we brainstormed questions for the interview and then each student wrote
down a question to ask Principal Nusbaum. Finally, the second graders took the activity one step further and asked Principal
Nusbaum to come to the classroom for an interview. Principal Nusbaum was a good sport and accepted the interview. The activity
was educational and fun.
2nd Grader: Where are you from?
Principal Nusbaum: Kilkenny, MN
Principal Nusbaum: Maybe we can work that into our Panther
Paw celebration.
2nd Grader: What do you do with your time away from school?
Principal Nusbaum: I enjoy spending time with my three
children.
2nd Grader: Why do you never grow hair?
Principal Nusbaum: A funny story. My sister used to cut my
hair, and one time she had the hair trimmer set to low and
started shaving my hair right down to my head. Having started
she had to finish the job. Turns out I liked it so I just kept
shaving it. Plus, I save money on haircuts!
2nd Grader: What is your favorite sport?
Principal Nusbaum: Football
2nd Grader: What is your favorite school that you went to?
Principal Nusbaum: Waterville Elementary School, I had a lot
of fun there.
2nd Grader: What was your favorite subject in school?
Principal Nusbaum: Social Studies, I love to learn about
history.
We would like to thank Principal Nusbaum for participating in
the interview and we hope you enjoyed reading it as much as
the second graders enjoyed the experience.
2nd Grader: Do you like college or being a principal more?
Principal Nusbaum: love being a principal more.
2nd Grader: What is the best part about being a principal?
Principal Nusbaum: Seeing the kids and working with a great
staff.
2nd Grader: What is the hardest part of being a principal?
Principal Nusbaum: The changing demands on teachers and in
education.
2nd Grader: Do you like being a teacher or principal more?
Principal Nusbaum: Both, but as a teacher I had more day to
day interaction with the students.
2nd Grader: Why can’t there be one hour a day for a
snowboarding class?

Career Day Activities at SCC Elementary
January was “Careers” month for classroom guidance. We
spent the month learning about a variety of careers and
asking ourselves, “What do I want to be when I grow up?”
After a successful round of “Career Days” last year, we could
not pass up another chance to hear more career path
stories.
Our Career Day activities were a HUGE success! The
students (and staff) loved hearing about the different career
options and career path stories. The students were able to
make meaningful connections between classroom content
and real life experiences.
A special thank you to all of the volunteers who took time
out of their busy schedules to show our students a glimpse
into their futures. Some were even brave enough to come to
multiple classes! We had police officers, interior designers,
construction workers, authors, business
owners, scientists, and many more. Thank
you for making a difference in the lives of
our children! Please consider being part of
our Career Day for 2016!

Power Your Body and Brain with
Breakfast
The word ―breakfast‖ means, ―breaking your fast‖
after a long night without food. It’s an especially
important meal for growing children. Breakfast
fills your child’s empty tank to help get his or her
body going for the day. Breakfast also helps to
feed children’s brains so they can listen in class, get schoolwork
done and maybe even do better on tests. When kids eat breakfast
regularly, it can also help them get the vitamins and minerals they
need to grow up strong and healthy.
For a good breakfast, try to include something from two or more of
the USDA’s MyPyramid food groups. For example, these breakfasts
include foods from three food groups:



Toast (Grains) with peanut butter (Proteins) and a glass of
orange juice (Fruits).
Cereal (Grains) with milk (Milk) and sliced banana (Fruits) on
top.
Remember, you are a role model for your child. So eat breakfast
together as often as possible during the week.

Adaptive Ski Program at Trollhaugen
Students in Mrs. Schwalen and Mrs. Sundeen's classes had a wonderful
opportunity to participate in an adapted ski program at Trollhaugen in Dresser,

ratio. The program has modified equipment so that
all students can participate. Dave Schwartz from
KARE 11 News also came to do a story on the
adapted ski school. The link to the story that aired

students do not have to reapply. Students who are presently
enrolled under Tuition Waiver Status do have to apply. The
resident school district is the district where the student will
reside in the 2015-2016 school year. The non-resident school
district is the district the student wants to attend in the 2015-16
school year. To take part in the open enrollment process, please

Important open enrollment dates
Feb. 2-April 30, 2015 – Parents must submit applications
online or directly to the nonresident school district.

How long can a sick person spread the flu to others?
Healthy adults may be able to spread the flu from one day before
getting sick to up to five days after getting sick. This can be longer in
children and in people who don’t fight disease as well (people with
weakened immune systems).
What is the flu?
The flu (influenza) is an infection of the nose, throat, and lungs
that is caused by the influenza virus. The flu can spread from
person to person. Most people with the flu are sick for about a
week, but then feel better. However, some people (especially
young children, pregnant women, older people, and people with
chronic health problems) can get very sick and some can die.
What are the symptoms of the flu?
Most people with the flu feel tired and have a fever (usually
high), headache, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose,
and sore muscles. Some people, especially children, may also
have stomach problems and diarrhea. Cough can last two or
more weeks.
How can I protect my child from the flu?
The flu vaccine is the best way to protect against the flu. CDC
recommends that all children from the ages of 6 months up to their
19th birthday get the flu vaccine every fall or winter (children getting
a vaccine for the first time need two doses).
 Flu shots can be given to children six months and older.
 A nasal spray vaccine can be given to healthy children two years
and older (children under five years old who have had wheezing
in the past year or any child with chronic health problems
should get the flu shot).
You can protect your child by getting a flu vaccine for yourself too.
Also encourage your child’s close contacts to get the flu vaccine.
This is very important if your child is younger than five or has a
chronic health problem like asthma (breathing disease) or diabetes
(high blood sugar levels).
How doe the flu spread?
Is there medicine to treat the flu?
People that have the flu usually cough, sneeze, and have a runny
nose. This makes droplets with virus in them. Other people can
get the flu by breathing in these droplets, getting them in their
nose or mouth, or touching contaminated surfaces.
There are antiviral drugs for children one year and older that can
make your child feel better and get better sooner. But these drugs
need to be approved by a doctor. They should be started during the
first two days that your child is sick for them to work best. Your
doctor can discuss with you if these drugs are right for your child.

SCC 2015-16 Incoming
5K Student Screening and Parent Informational Meeting
The St. Croix Central School District 2015-16 incoming 5K student screening and parent
informational meeting will be held in the kindergarten classrooms of the elementary school on
March 20th at 8:00 a.m.- 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m., and 12:30 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. Parents with
children that will turn 5 years-old on or before September 1, 2015 and parents of current SCC 4K
students are encouraged to sign up for a time slot online at the SCC website (http://
www.scc.k12.wi.us) under the elementary page.
We are asking that students and at least one parent attend the screening and parent meeting.
While students are being screened, a parent presentation will be given by Elementary Principal Pete
Nusbaum. Parents will learn the kindergarten daily schedule, busing options, supplies needed,
medical/vaccination requirements, and information on attending summer school.
Parents will also need to complete enrollment paperwork for their child. If your child did not attend
the SCC 4K program, please bring a certified copy of his/her birth
certificate to the presentation meeting.
If you have any questions beforehand, please call the elementary
school or email Principal Nusbaum at 715-749-3119, ext. 4102 or
pnusbaum@scc.k12.wi.us.
