The Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) of Mary
Immaculate College, which was established in 1986, is
a nationally and internationally recognised centre of
excellence in terms of curricular design and
innovation. It promotes high standards in teaching and
learning by undertaking research into curriculum and
methodology in education. This research informs the
development of resource materials that are
embedded in the latest thinking and ideas about
education.
Focus on Fluency
Focus on Fluency provides teachers with a wealth of
practical, research-based strategies and suggestions
that can be used to help senior primary and junior
cycle post-primary students to become more
accurate, automatic and expressive readers.

In Tídil Eidil Éro, the CDU and Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne
collaborated on the production of an educational pack consisting of a
sample of the songs and singers of Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht. It
includes a large number of folk songs in a manner designed specifically
for the primary school curriculum.
The multimedia files on both CDs can be connected directly with the
interactive board, a useful asset for teachers. With this resource, a
broad range of curricular areas can be dealt with, including language,
history and art as well as music.

‘No Place like Home’ is an exciting educational
resource that has been developed by the CDU at Mary
Immaculate College in collaboration with Focus
Ireland. It is aimed at exploring homelessness,
developing empathy and challenging the negative
stereotypes some young people may have about
people who are homeless. This child-centred,
teacher-friendly resource fully embraces the
objectives of the Primary School Curriculum.
The resource aims to gain students’ interest by
using a variety of mediums including multimedia, art,
