TWT MARCH 29 - APRIL 4 1985
TWT MARCH 29 - APRIL 4 1985
AUSTIN - State Senator Craig
WaShington has filed a far-reaching bill
in the 69th session of the Texas
Legislature which would protect gay
job rights. His proposed legislation
would prohibit employment discrimination against homosexuals in Texas.
Although the filing of his bill made
front-page headlines last week in many
state newspapers, TWT NEWS has learned from reliable sources at the state
capitol in Austin that his bill is "really
not new.
"I remember in 1975 when Craig
stood before the house and proposed
this exact same bill," HGPC board
member Ray Hill explained. "There
were many good 01' boy catcalls back
then. But Craig's bill made it to the
house floor where it got only six votes.
"Interestingly, Houston City Councilperson Ben Reyes voted for it back
then along with Mickey Leeland and
Anthony Hall," Hill recalled. "But this
time the bill will never make it to the
floor I suspect. It will quietly die in a
Capitol Hill committee."
"Craig has filed similar bills in the
past as simply a matterof principal. He
believes that gays should not be discriminated against," it was explained.
After all, Washington was the treasurer
of Citizens for a United Houston-the
pro-gay group of the January 19 gay
rights job protection referendum.
Olivia Walker, an aide to the senator,
underscored Washington's
sincere
belief in the bill when she explained,
"There were some requests from some
constituents
in Houston, and he
thought that was a cause that needed
to be addressed."
Reaction was quick from Houston
where a gay rights job protection
referendum
was recently
easily

defeated by voters, 4-to-1. Councilperson John Goodnerwho led the opposition to ban discrimination in Houston
said, "I am disappointed" that he filed
such a bill. "I would hope the
Legislature doesn't pass the thing."
Goodner told reporter Clay Robison
of the Houston Chronicle's Austin
bureau that he would ask the city of
Houston to go on record against the
legisla~ion.
"I certainly think this bill would affect the city of Houston since it is an
extension of the same program the city's electorate just spoke on back on
January 19," Goodnertold KTRH radio
news reporter, Sue Davis.
Gay rights lobbyist, SheliaCheaney,
said her Austin group, Lesbian/Gay
Rights Advocates, would naturally
monitor the progress of Washington's
pro-gay bill.
Meanwhile, the editorial director of
Houston's KTRH-Radio, Garvin Berry,
commented on Washington's proposed bill to ban discrimination against
gays in all jobs in Texas-both governmental and private.
"It's not likely to pass," commented
Berry, "but if it does, it will presumably
go into effect in late August, just when
Houston's city election races heat up.
"That is not good political news for
Mayor Kathryn Whitmire and Anthony
Hall and the other councilmembers
who favored the gay rights ordinance.
All of this makes Houston's volatile city politics even more explosive this
November,"
Berry concluded
his
50,000-watt radio commentary.
COOKSEY CAMPAIGN
FOR AUSTIN MAYOR
AUSTIN - When it came time to endorse candidates for the April 6 mayor's
race, the ALGPC had little hesitation in
endorsing Frank Cooksey over incumbent Ron Mullen for mayor of the city
of Austin.
"Frank has always been astrong civil
rights and minority rights supporter
since the 1960s, back in Atlanta," Roy
Harbison of ALGPC explained to TWT
TWT MARCH 29 - APRIL 4 1985
512-473-2501
NEWS/Austin. Furthermore, his opponent, incumbent Mullen, has said he
doesn't support current gay rights
laws.
Two years ago when Mullen ran
against Lowell Libermann, most local
gay club owners endorsed Libermann.
Although ALGPC made a soft recommendation of Mullen, the caucus never
officially endorsed him.
Unlike last time, there clearly is no
confusion over whom to endorse this
election year. Cooksey is the choice.
But it promises to be a tight four-way
race ..
The latest public opinion poll in
Austin shows Mullen and Cooksey running neck and neck with about 35%
each, followed by Max Nofziger in third
place. No one has the necessary 50.1%
to win.
Consequently, a runoff seems quite
likely. It would follow the April 6 election by one month as the runoff between the top two candidates would be
on Saturday, May 4.
AHRC ENDORCES
ALAMO CANDIDATES
SAN ANTONIO - The Alamo
Human Rights Committee informed
TWTNEws/San Antonio that it voted to
join Mayor Henry Cisneros, the majority of City Council and the San Antonio
ghamberof Commerce in backing passage of all five bond proposals on the
April 6 ballot.
"The AHRC encourages all concerned citizens to vote yes to improve the
quality of our city services," secretary,
Clint Harris said.
In City Council races, AHRC fully endorsed Manuel Cruz in District 7 and
Maria Eerriozabal, the incumbent in
District 1. Several other candidates,
although not receiving the full endorsement of AH RC, are considered acceptable on human rights issues: Helen
Dutnerof District 3, Walter Martinez of
District 5 and Rick Cockerham of District 8.
AHRC stated that it considered Van
Henry Archer in District 9 "unaccepPAGE 13

ANTI·GAY
IS BROKE
HOUSTON - The Committee for
Public Awareness, the group chaired by
City Councilperson John Goodnerwho
lead the January 19 referendum battle
against gay rights, says his committee
is broke and considering a fundraising
drive in order to payoff its outstanding
bills.
The committee's
treasurer, City
Councilmember Ben Reyes told Houston Digest, "We've contemplated holding a fundraiser. I think the staff and
VOlunteers are planning it, though I
don't have any idea when. We need to,
while the memory of the people is still
sharp."
Committee for Public Awareness
reported to the city secretary's office
that it spent a total of $101,460 on the
campaign which successfully defeated
the gay rights job discrimination
measures by a 4-to-1 margin.
On the other side of the coin, Citizens for a United Houston, the group
formed to favor the gay rights measures, reported to TWTNEWS/Houston
that's its after-campaign debts were
kept under $20,000.
FORT WORTH CENTER
3RD ANNIVERSARY
FORT WORTH - This city's Center
forthe Community, 2412 Lipscob, will
celebrate its third anniversary of service to the metroplex this Tuesday,
April 2 beginning at 7:30 p.m. This
year's gathering will be informal, Buddy Jones of TWT NEws/Fort Worth
advised.
"We will have refreshments, entertainment and good fellowship," he added. There will also be a slide preview
of last year's activities along with
special events for April and sign-ups for
summer athletics. "Everyone is welcome to attend," Jones invited.
The center was founded three years
ago by a few visionary individuals who
saw a need for the city's growing and
emerging gay community. The center
has continued to provide support and
referrals to other groups and social
alternatives.
The center's main outreach has been
through Gayline, an information referral and crisis line. It also has remained
active in gay pride week and initiating
social gatherings.
"We are excited about the new format," the center's president remarked .
"We now have one general meeting on
the first Tuesday evening of every
month, and now we have the flexibility
of scheduling dinners at restaurants,
athletic events and other social gatherings on any day throughout the month."

TEXAS MORTICIANS
GET AIDS GUIDELINES
DALLAS - Following several recent
disturbing incidents regarding the
funerals and burials of AIDS victims,
the Dallas Gay Alliance has asked the
Texas Health Department for specific
guidelines to be passed on to funeral
directors.
The request follows several horror
stories reported to the Alliance, Mike
Richards, DGA board member advised
TWTNEwslDalias.FARO has also heard
of similar stories regarding the death
of people with AIDS, Richards added.
One documented incident concerns
funeral home employees who arrived to
pick up a body while wearing face
masks and respirators and talking to
family members in the home while
wearing protective devices.
Another funeral home in Texas allegedly charged an extra $200 for
plastic gloves and gowns to be used
while handling the body of an AIDS patient. Another funeral home reportedly tried to sell the family a $900 germfree coffin. Family members of another
incident told DGA that a local funeral
home had said that open casket viewing would be permitted only if a plastic
shield were in place surrounding the
coffin.
A check of the Dallas County Funeral
Directors Association, the Texas Funeral Directors Association and the
State Board of Morticians indicated
they were all following the health
department guidelines, William Waybourn learned. Waybourn, a DGA board
member, is charged with investigating
the matter of burying AIDS victims.

Other events planned include two
benefit shows, one of which is scheduled for April 4 at Papa Bears and the
other at the Copa on April 16. Other
means of funding this event are forthcoming, said coordinator, Clint Harris.
It is all themed "Celebration '85, Reaffirming Our Pride."
The Fiesta reception for Apuzzo is
certain to draw a large audience, as she
is a very vocal to-the-point speaker,
TWTNEWShas observed.
Meanwhile, AHRC continues to support Lesbian/Gay Rights Advocates,
the gay rights lobby in Austin. $415 was
raised at a cocktail party on St. Patrick's
Day, March 17, at Dr. Earl Stenger's
home, when AHRC kicked off a reception for LGRA lobbyist, Shelia Cheaney,
and co-chairs Pat Cramer and John
Calkin.
On St. Patrick's Day in San Antonio, the AHRC held a cocktail

404 WESTHEIMER' HOUSION_ ~ITES 523-0170
HOUSTON - Gay Political Caucus
board members have returned from an
exciting Gulf Coast retreat at Bolivar
peninsula where they charted the
course of action forthis important election year. At the retreat, HGPC's committees mapped out their annual strategy·
One of the new committees formed
was the Economic Response Committee which is researching the names of
contributors who gave to the opposition in the January 19 referendum.
"We're not proposing boycotts,"
HGPC president, Sue Lovell stressed.
"We're simply disseminating information," she clarified.
But Houston's gay community has
been quick to react to the information.
For instance, TWTNEWShas learned
that Liberty Bank on Westheimer has
opened about 200 new accounts since
the first list of contributors
was
published.
New customers are telling us that
they are pulling their money out of unfriendly banks and moving it to Liberty, a bank official said. Chemical Bank
on Kirby has also recently seen a surge
of new accounts opened by gay community members.
"It's economically smart," Lovell
suggested.
AUSTIN LAMBDA'S
RITESOF SPRING
DOCUMENTING GAY
DISCRIMINATION
AUSTIN - The first annual Rites of
Spring dance, sponsored by Austin
Lambda, will be held this Saturday
night, March 30 at st. George's Episcopal Church, 1-35 at Airport Blvd., 9
p.m. until 1 a.m.
"The dance will feature favorite
music, videos, open bar and lots of
friendly folks," Rick Richards, men's
co-chair, advised TWTNEWS/Austin.
A donation is requested at the door.
Austin Lambda is a non-profit organization. The Rites of Spring is this month's
major fundraiser, it was explained.
HOUSTON - It is widely felt among
local community leaders that one of the
reasons why the recent gay rights job
protection referendum went down to
such a wide margin of defeat, 4-to-1,
was that there was no hard evidence
that anyone had ever been discriminated in city employment.
Had the gay community been able to
prove that a gay person was fired or
denied employment by the city, a real
case could have been made for the
need for the proposed ordinances.

Forthose reasons, HGPC has revved
up its political
engines to start
documenting all cases of harassment.
In fact, a new committee has been
formed that will keep track of what's being said about homosexuals in the city
newspapers, on radio and TV newscasts and with individuals.
Tom Coleman, vice president of the
caucus, told how he tracked down an
anti-gay news story on KIKK radio. He
visited the news director and obtained
a copy of the news item which said,
"Remember that gay rights referendum
we rejected by a 4-to-1 margin in
January? Well, KIKK's Derrill Holly says
a certain elected official,
Craig
Washington, is trying to sneak similar
legislation through the Texas Legislature."
An HGPC member told of how one
of his gay friends was recently refused medical treatment at Memorial City
Hospital after being injured by a hitchhiker. Anothertold of how she had lost
custody of her children when her husband found out she was a lesbian.
"We will use the National Gay Task
Force discrimination form to keep a
record of all these anti-gay occurrences," president, Sue Lovell said.
"When you hear or see something in
the papers, on the radio or TV that is
offensive or learn of gay harassment,
let our committees
know," Lovell
pleaded.

Editor-the following letter was sent to Mr.

Dear Mr. Moulton,
We, the members of the Montrose
Social Club strongly disapprove of your
donation to the anti-referendum forces in
the recent vote concerning the sexual
orientation of city employees. We believe
that sexual orientation as defined in the
ordinance is a personal matter and should
have no bearing on an employee's job
performance. It is unfortunate that your
bank helped to fund a group that not only
opposed guaranteeing this right in city

For this reason, we are closing our

DearTWT:
This letter is in response to the March
1, 1985, 7:30 p.m. incident at Houston's
Ray'S Five & Dime, wherein the Houston
Police Department and ambulance were
called to the bar, in response to a person
who had walked into the bar after being
shot. I was the person who had been shot
while washing my car at the carwash a
block away on the corner of Jackson and

Montrose. I was alone at the carwash
when two men approached me, shot me,
then stole my car. I walked to Ray's Five
& Dime where Ray and others came to my
immediate rescue, called the police,
called the ambulance, and at the same
time, took care of my medical needs.
Because of the efficient and quick response of the staff and customers at
Ray's Five & Dime, I was at the hospital in
a matter of minutes.
This letter has three purposes: (1) to
dispel any rumors of a shooting at Ray's
Five & Dime, (2) to thank the staff and
customers at Ray's Five & Dime for their
immediate and professional response, and
(3) to caution people to pay close
attention to their immediate surroundings
at all times, day and night, especially
while alone.

Dallas Candidates
Dear TWT:
For the past six months, the future of
gay America has been threatened from the
White House to Houston. In less than two
weeks, the gay men and women of Dallas
have the opportunity to tum the tables on
what has taken place nationally.
On Saturday, April 6, the election of Bill
Nelson to the Dallas City Council will
send a powerful message to the entire
state that the gay citizenry of Texas has
become even more determined to attain
the goal of equal rights for all people.

Bill Nelson, 36, Is one of four people campaigning
to unseat incumbent
Paul Fielding for
the Place 2 position on the Dallas City Council in the election coming up on April 6. Mr. Nelson
and his partner Terry
have been active in a leadership capacity in the gay social, business
and political scene in Dallas for many years. They also own the Crossroads Market, a popular
shop on Cedar Springs.
Nelson is a life-long resident of Dallas, having lived in District 2 for the past 12 years, is
a graduate of SMU and was a DISD teacher for 10 years. He is also the current president of
the Dallas Gay Alliance. He has received the endorsements of the Dallas Homeowner's Association, The Dallas Gay Political Caucus, the Oak Lawn.Dj1mocrats
and the back-up endorsement of the Dal/as Area Women's Political Caucus. Alan Gellman of TWT NEws/Dallas interviewed Mr. Nelson on Thursday, March 21, 1985.

<,
TWT - How do you respond to your
critics who view you as a "one issue"
candidate, and what do you see as the
major issues in the campaign?
NELSON - Critics who insist that I
am a one-issue candidate have not examined my campaign or heard me speak
at candidate forums. While I constantly maintain my integrity as a gay man,
the subject has rarely come up for
discussion outside of the gay community. The main issues of the campaign
center around zoning and the future of
managed growth in our city. In District
2, neighborhood preservation, concern
about loss of low and moderate income
housing and crime are top priorities of
Concern to the voters.
TWT - If elected, will you push for
a City Ordinance and would you favor
a referendum similar to the one that
recently was defeated by voters in
Houston?
NELSON - There has been some
misunderstanding as to my plans for a
TWT MARCH 29 - APRIL 4 1985
gay rights ordinance here in Dallas, and
I would like to clear that up for you now.
I believe in the power of law, both as a
judicial and an educational tool. For that
reason, I firmly believe that an ordinance
which guarantees equal rights for gay
people is essential to our progress.
Houston taught us many lessons about
going into this process unprepared,
however. What I propose is that, immediately after taking office, I will not
introduce the ordinance, but I will call
the city attorney's office and have the
ordinance drafted. We must have an actual written ordinance so there will be
no misunderstanding about what we are
proposing. People will also see that it
is not just a "gay rights" ordinance, but
also addresses age, marital status, handicapped status, and political beliefs or
affiliations. Then the controversy can
begin (if there is any) before the ordinance is officially introduced. We can
find out who our friends are and who is
likely to be on the opposing side. We
can do all of the talking and all of the
PAGE 23

educating before we are actually under
the gun of a referendum. Houston made
the mistake of passing the ordinance
first and then fighting it out. When the
time is right (and that time will come),
It will then be my honor to introduce and
defend this major step in the lives of
Dallas's gay citizens.
TWT - Mr. Nelson, it has been suggested by some of you r opponents that
serving as president of the Dallas Gay
Alliance conflicts with your running for
City Council. How do you respond?
NELSON - I did not resign my position with the Alliance, because I did not
in any way want to suggest to the public
that I was trying to back away from or
downplay my background as a gay activist and my integrity as a gay man.
Strangely enough, the only expressed
concern about that decision has come
from within the gay community itself.
Non-gays find it perfectly natural for a
community leader to run for public
office.
TWT - If no candidate receives more
than 50% of the vote in Saturday'S election, there will be a runoff between the
top two vote getters. Do you see this
happening and if so, which candidate
would you most like to face in the
runoff?
NELSON - I would prefer to face
Paul Fielding, because I could count on
the united support in a runoff of all of
those diverse interests in District 2 who
have been offended and dlsentranchlsed by his representation. Replacement
of an ineffective incumbent has been a
common theme in this campaign among
all of the challengers, and I think it
represents an important statement
about the future unity and effectiveness
of District 2 as a powerful part of the
city.
TWT - According to what I've read
elsewhere, it would appear that the
Dallas Tavern Guild is solidly behind
Paul Fielding. In your opinion, why
would they support him rather than the
openly gay candidate?
NELSON - It is not true that all of
the bar owners support Paul Fielding for
re-election. I enjoy the support and enTWT MARCH 29 - APRIL 4 1985
couragement of much of the gay business community, including bar owners.
Paul Fielding has been of service to
some of the bar owners, and perhaps
that explains their support of his candidacy.1 think that their interests would
bebetter served, along with those of our
entire community, by having an openly
gay elected representative actively
working every minute towards understanding and respect for our lifestyle.
TWT - Do you feel that the recent
controversy concerning Paul Fielding'S
marital status and tax questions will or
should have any effect on the outcome
of this election?
NELSON - I don't think that a person holding any job should be rated on
anything other than their job performance-but,
realistically speaking, I
think both issues will contribute to his
defeat in April.
TWT - With respect to Love Field,
what are your views concerning noise
and increased traffic?
NELSON - The airlines which serve
Love Field must be forced to honor their
commitment to use Stage III aircraft
which will result in a significant noise
reduction around the airport. Our city
prides itself on a good business approach to government, and it is good
business to honor contracts and
agreements. It is also good business to
have Love Field.
TWT - What would you like to see
done with Central Expressway?
NELSON - I favor widening Central
now with two restrictions: (1) it must all
be at ground level or below and (2) it
must include an area for mass transit.
The solutions to Dallas's traffic do not
lie in management of automobiles as
much as the development of reliable,
convenient public transportation.
TWT - How would you work to
change the current hiring practices
Which discriminate against gays in the
Police and Fire Departments in the city
of Dallas?
NELSON - The hiring policies of the
Police and Fire Departments with regard
to gays are completely unacceptablenot because we have a line of gay peoTWT MARCH 29 - APRIL 4 1985
pie waiting to fill those jobs-but
because such discrimination is morally wrong. It means that gay people are
unwillingly funding their own oppression by paying taxes. When a public institution has such a policy, it is the
green light to the private sector that
discrimination is acceptable. It specifically indicates that the city thinks that
there is something wrong with gay people. I would make it one of my top
priorities to work aggressively with the
Police Department to have their policy
changed-and
that Change acknowledged-as soon as possible.
TWT - In closing, is there anything
you would like to say to our readers?
NELSON - Yes, there are two other
points that I would like to make about
this election.
First of all, I would like to point out
the difference between my candidacy
and that of the others in the race regarding the gay issue. No other candidate,
including the incumbent, has a stated
agenda which addresses the needs of
the gay community. All of the other people running only intend to react to problems which arise. I intend to work in a
positive way on a daily basis to improve
the understanding and the acceptance
of gay people in all areas of this city.
The second point concerns the symbolic nature of placing an openly gay
person in elected office in Dallas. It
would be a sign for all people, not just
gays, that ourcity is sensitive and open
to everyone. It would show that the
defeat of the referendum in Houston
was not the crushing blow to human
rights that our enemies would like to
think. And it would be a constant reminderto young gay people all overthis
city that their gayness is nothing to be
ashamed of, that they are good people
and deserve as much respect and opportunity as any other citizen.
I hope that all of the gay community
will share with me the excitement of this
wonderful opportunity. Whatever the
outcome, there will be no loss in this
election. But a victory will truly represent the dawning of a new day for our
people in Texas.

Health care services are so important
to the consumer that one can ill afford

within health care services rarely comes
to public attention. In this HIGHLIGHT,
the focus is health care. The doctors and

A surprisingly large amount of money
was contributed by health care professionals. Not only should we have concerns about the quality of health care
one can receive from a prejudiced doctor, but if some doctors are so opposed
to basic rights for gay men and lesbians
that they contribute their money to our
enemies, should we not be equally concerned about the issues of confidentiality?

the phenomenon to become known as
AIDS. As more and more types of populations became affected, the media, the
general public, and the whole world
,began to take note. Two years had passed since the disease had been recognized when children and blood transfusionrelated cases began to appear and
everything moved into high gear. The
media produced sensationalized stories
as researchers probed for answers to
"the public health threat of the century"
(Newsweek magazine) and "the number
one health priority in the nation" according to federal officials.
It became apparent early on that
many of the previously healthy young
men developing AIDS did not have the
financial resources at hand to face
catastrophic illness. Indigent medical
care and social assistance programs
would have to be established to handle
this problem. Social assistance programs in Houston and Texas are typically lacking, and new ones specifically for
AIDS victims were designed in 1983 by
the fledgling KS/AIDS Foundation of
Houston in response to a growing number of requests. The Foundation identified several sources of public assistance and helped clients to obtain the
services they deserved and needed. As
public assistance in the fight against
AIDS has been minimal, most everything available is coordinated by the
community and done through private
donations as described below.
Meanwhile, in late 1981, Houston's
first cases had arrived at UT M.D. Anderson Hospital, a state institution. Researchers there began to study and treat a
growing number of cases. The education efforts of a great number of persons
helped alleviate the fear among health
care workers in order to ensure adequate and proper health care delivery.
Today, several area hospitals accept
and treat people with AIDS. The Harris
County Hospital District (the only other
source of indigent medical care in
Houston besides UT M.D. Anderson
Hospital's program) is now accepting
cases of AIDS.
In early 1984, at the urging of the

the next 10years, some epidemiologists
predict that AIDS may become another
standard STD unless prevention programs or a treatment is found.
The cause of AIDS is now established as a virus named HTLV-3, or LAV,
although "co-factors" may be involved
in whether a person becomes ill. AIDS
is diagnosed by laboratory testing and
clinical symptoms. The new HTLV3/LAV Antibody Test is not a test of
AIDS, pre-AIDS, or AIDS-Related Complex; members of the high-risk groups
should not donate blood or take the
HTLV-3/LAV Antibody Test. Progress
has been made in treating the infectious
and cancerous complications of AIDS,
and research into treating the underlying immune problem and viral infection
continues. There is no vaccine for AIDS
to be available anytime soon; thus,
prevention through such methods as
practicing "safe sex" are the major way
to avoid contracting AIDS at this time.
The public response to AIDS in
Houston has been essentially nonexistent compared to that on the East
and West Coast. Locally, public
response has concentrated more on
blaming the victims and a backlash
against gays rather than a positive solution for the benefit of everyone. The gay
community has pulled together to
create systems of education and
assistance which simply did not exist
three years ago. Education programs
have emphasized disease prevention
and health promotion; social assistance
programs help the vicitms of AIDS live
with comfort and dignity. The average
gay male is beginning to make significant changes in his attitudes and
behaviors regarding AIDS. As a community and as individuals, gays have
responded in a very responsible and
positive manner to the most important
challenge to face them in decades. In
orderto emerge alive and energetic from
the AIDS crisis, gays must continue to
work together and support the fight
against AIDS. Together, a significant impact can be made in the long, hard fight
against the most important disease of
the century.

INTERVIEW

... only because she's a lesbian
Susan Smith of Houston is a 23-year-old mother of four children: an eldest son, age 6; twins,
a boy and a girl, ages 3; and a baby boy, age 2.
On March 19, Judge Norman Lee ordered the mother separated from her children because
heralleged "blatant homosexuality" was damaging to her children and had caused irreparable
harm.
What follows is a heart-rending interview with the mother of four. Clearly, it is another case
of discrimination against gay parents in the courts.

TWT MARCH 29 - APRIL 4 1985
TWT - Susan, thank you for agreeing to share your story with our readers.
Why don't you take us back in time and
start at the beginning so we can set the
stage.
SUSAN - When I was 15 years old,
I got married to escape my home life.
I remained married for two years until
I got a divorce, at which time I was
granted sale conservetorship of the only
child of that marriage-my first son. I
then moved to Houston, went to work
and started school at the University of
Houston. It was then that I got married
again and had twins at age 19. Then 17
months later, I gave birth to my fourth
Child.
TWT - Let's bring your husband into the story.
TWT MARCH 29 - APRIL 4 1985
SUSAN - He encouraged me into
non-heterosexual relationships, because he knew prior to our marriage that
my sexual preference was for women.
TWT - If it was his idea in the first
place that you date women, then what
went wrong?
SUSAN - I guess he felt I was getting a little too involved with one woman
in 'particular. At that point I would not
have classified my relationship with her
as a love affair. But, nevertheless, in May
of 1984, he left me. About a week or so
later he asked if all four of the children
could come to his mother's house to
spend the weekend. Hesitantly and
reluctantly I agreed with the encouragement of some friends whom I now regret
having listened to.
PAGE 37
TWT - At the end of that weekend
last May, what happened that made you
realize you'd made a mistake?
SUSAN - When I went to his
mother's house on Sunday, they would
not let me onto the property. They said
they had a restraining order which they
would not allow me to read. I then went
to the Pearland Police Department and
got an officer to come out with me. He
spoke to the attorney and instructed me
to leave. The next day, Monday, I went
to the courthouse to get a copy of the
restraining order. I was served divorce

I even knew his name and telephone
number. But he didn't know any of this.
On one particular occasion, I was making a phone call at this pay phone. He
walked up to me pretending to be drunk
and dropped a coin in the next phone.
I saw him retrieve the coin, so I knew
he wasn't actually talking on the
telephone. I saw he had a tape recorder
in his back pocket, so I ended my phone
call, got in my car and drove around the
building. When he started to get in his
car I drove up to him and said, "Mr.
detective, your tape recorder is falling
out of your back pocket." I don't think
the poor man could have turned any
more shades of red than he did.
TWT - Did he spy on any of your
private affairs?
SUSAN - Oh, sure. He was caught
several times by my neighbor peeking
in my windows. He cut my window
screens. He tape recorded an incident
through an open bathroom window.
TWT - What kind of incident?
SUSAN - A very intimate situation
with my girlfriend and I in the bathtub
together. He tried to use that recording
in the June 5 temporary hearing.
TWT - Let's talk about your attorney
in this case.
SUSAN - She was inexperienced,
and that led to my losing a lot of my
rights. Not realizing at the time that
some of this evidence was obtained illegally, she gave into the pressure of the
moment. You see, the detective had
entered through a gate onto private propertyand positioned himself under my
bathroom window. He shouldn't have
been there.
TWT - Bring us forward now to the
latest legal round.
SUSAN - The most recent court
date was Tuesday, March 19 in Judge
Norman Lee's court. On the Friday
before the court date, my attorney
received a phone call from the master
of the court at which time she found out
what the judge was going to rule-that
I would have no overnights with my kids
and very limited visitation days during
daylight hours only, if that.
TWT - In other words, the judge

possible. I have 18 months minimum untill can go back to file a motion of circumstances. Hopefully by that time I
will have more gainful employment.
Right now I'm working at the medical
center. I did one fundraiser at Bacchus
here in Houston and want to do more.
I'd also like to get a gay mothers support group activated.
TWT - That's wonderful. If there are
any gay mothers reading this who wish
to participate, I encourage them to write
to you in care of TWT NEWS, 2205 Montrose Blvd., Houston, Tx. 77006. We'll
forward all mail onto you, Susan.
SUSAN - There have been gay
mother groups before, but the length of
time they stay active is limited because
after you've fought your own battles in
court, women are usually too exhausted
to help others fight more battles. With
the financial and social problems that
women face, it's difficult to keep a support group going. But, I know I have the
organizational skills to keep one together.
TWT - I know your kids were
everything to you, and what you have
gone through during the past year could
help other lesbians in similar situations
where they have lost their children or are
trying to support them on a limited
salary.
SUSAN - I thin~ that the knowledge
that has been gained from my experience would help others. It is also my
understanding that gay father groups
have come a lot further legally than gay
mother groups. We can change that. I
think our community really needs to
band together, because there are still
too many barriers out there.
TWT - Obviously, gay parents and
their children is still a segment of gay
rights that has a long way to go. You are
a true example of how a gay mother is
treated by the law differently than a
straight mother. We at TWT NEWS wish
you good luck in getting all of your
children back under your loving care.
SUSAN - Thank you, Chuck. And I'll
keep you posted on my case. In the
meantime, I hope other gay mothers will
write to me in care of this magazine.
didn't want the children to be with you
at night on the chance your girlfriend
ight also be there.
rn SUSAN - Yes, but remember that
they had no proof of our relationship or
that I had ever been around my lover.
Nevertheless, there is a restraint keeping my lover away from my children. I
havetestimony from when I was back
in court last December that I'm a better
arent than my husband because I pay
~ore attention to them. Also it was an
absolute lie that I was a user of drugs.
I love my children very much and
nothing I have done has affected my
parental ability.
TWT - Why were only three of your
children taken from you?
SUSAN - Because my eldest was
from a previous marriage. However, my
latest in-laws have now informed my
first husband of "my blatant homosexualaffair." It wasn't until their efforts to
takecustody of my eldest son failed that
they called my first husband. So I stand
to maybe even lose the only child left
with me.
TWT - And what about your
lifestyle?
SUSAN - It was ruled that I can't
even have a roommate to share expenses. She can't even be present when
the children are around.
TWT - I would think this would be
as hard on the children as it is on you.
SUSAN - The children
cry and
want to come home with mommy. They
don't understand why mommy doesn't
stay there with grandma. The children
are really upset. If given a choice they
most likely would stay with me. I'm the
one who read to them every night and
spent all my time with them.
TWT - It is my unlegal opinion that
the children would still be with you if
you weren't gay. Courts usually grant
custody to the mother rather than the
father. But because you are a lesbian,
the usual ruling has not prevailed. Clearly this is a case of legal discrimination
because of your sexual preference. I
take it you're not giving up?
SUSAN - That's right. I intend to use
my time to the greatest advantage

haunting melody somewhat reminiscentof the Patrick Cowley classic, "Sea
Hunt." My favorite cut on the album is
"panic" at 118 bpm. This cut features
/
the most powerful beat-box rhythmvery much like the incredible Art of
Noise hit "Beat Box (Diversion II)." The
feeling of the music is very much like
the recent "Papa's Got a Brand New
Pigbag" remake, also produced by Paul
Hardcastle. This cut could be a major
"after-hours" hit. I'd love to hear a dubremix of It.
Another outstanding cut is "A.M.,"
also at 128 bpm. Beautiful uptempo
easylistening-it
reminds me of "Turn
II Around" by Gino Soccio. The melody
is more complex than most other cuts
onthe album (most other cuts are more
rhythm than melody).
The only vocals on the album are the
vocordereffects in Jound Chaser" (118
bpm),which backed the original single
release of "Rain Forest." This cut has
beena big hit in the black- and "funk"oriented clubs.
Overall, this is an outstanding album.
Everycut is enjoyable. Some might call
this a "formula" album in that every cut
has many similarities-almost
like
variations on a singular theme. In this
case, the theme is the beat box rhythm
synched with smooth flowing keyboard
arrangements. As debut albums go, this

The rhythm is beat-box generated and
the vocals are dub-mixed and splice
edited throughout the mix. The melody
is hauntingly beautiful and very hypnotic. The hook is comprised of spliceedited vocal rhythms-a very original
and entertaining idea. This cut is
definitely not for everyone, but those
who appreciate the electronic evolution
of R&B will consider this a trendsetting
masterwork.
"Rhythm of the Night" by DeBarge on
Motown Records, U.S.A.(118bpm). This
cut is the theme from the Tri-Star motion picture, The Last Dragon. The calypso rhythm is very reminiscent of the
smash hit "All Night Long" by Lionel
Richie and promises to be just as successful. The energy is light and happy,
and the remixed dance single version
features lots of upper-end percussion
and rhythm breaks. DeBarge has an
outstanding reputation for beautiful orchestration and smooth, soulful vocal
arrangements. These qualities shine in
this latest release and almost insure
commercial success in most music
markets.
"Feels So Real" by Steve Arrington
on Atlantic Records (116 bpm). A truly
beautiful R&B love song with an upbeat
happy energy. The lyrics are almost
gospel and the rhythm has a calypso
feeling due to the percussion rhythm
tracks and the beautifully arranged
horns.
The B side of the extended single version is instrumental and features "a
stronger base, more upper-end percussion and female background vocals in
the chorus. The trumpet break is also
longer and more powerful. This cut has
really grown on me. If you're looking for
smooth easy listening with a good
rhythm, this cut is sure to please.

The special showing of Bottoms Up

cessful sellout. Although the production was at 2 p.m. on a very bright Sunday, it was well worth getting up early
to see. The cast, aware that they were
playing for a lroup of "brothers" and
"sisters," pulled out all the stops and
ad-libbed some of the show that the
non-gay crowds will never see. Although
the show went 20 minutes over due to
the partying, many of us weren't ready
for it to end, it was so great. Go see Bottoms Up and experience why it's been
around for 26 years.
Breck Wall, producer and founder of
the show, was seen last weekend with
the entire cast skating down the seawall
in Galveston reeking havoc on the poor
tourists who got in their way. Coproducer Patrick Maes flew in from Las
Vegas to join in the festivities.
Other members of the cast are: David
Harris, Sue Montsinger, Rosa Hodges,
Daniel Lawrence Lee Lewis, Dione Grillo, Kaye Niboli and Sherry Smith.

COSMICCATACLYSM- On the night of March 20, atronomers working with precision instruments at a planetarium in Rutabaga Falls, Montana, observed the explosion of the supernova Cour-Voisier-a first magnitude red giant star in the nearby
constellation of UrsaeAndress. Although this rare phenomenon undoubtedly went
unnoticed by most of us, astronomers and other scientists around the world have
noted significant changes in the astrological relationships within our own solar system.
For instance, one effect of the "cosmic interference" appears to be the alteration
of the annual spring equinox from Mar_ch21 to on or about April 1. And you can
expect the fall equinox to occur sometime in June.
APRIL FORECASTFORALL SIGNS- Cosmic interference as a result of the March

week by the queen who usually writes this crap) into a Venus-Mars-Plutoaspect. Since
the grave significance of this celestial menage trois probably isn't understood by
most laypersons, I'm here to tell you to fasten your cosmic seat belts. April could

For most of us, love can be as confusing as it is important. In Decent
Passions: Real Stories About Love, Michael Dcftneny looks at three very
different and non-traditional
relationships (gay male, lesbian, and
inter-racial) from the separate perspectives of the two people
involved.
From these six stories, he helps us start to find the
common themes behind love, decency and passion, and the way that
these threads can intertwine in each of our lives.
