Professional Workshop Series Science Communication Workshop
July 20 to 22, 2016
Presented by Anton Holland, President and CEO NIVA Inc.
The workshop will provide a hands‐on introduction to the fundamental principles of communicating science in plain language. It will cover the role of scientists in communicating science to different types of audiences, what their motivations for doing so might be, why it is important, and tips and tools for doing it effectively. The workshop will also cover pitfalls that should be avoided, with examples of actual missteps and how they could have been avoided. The workshop will be a mix of theory and practice; hands‐on exercises to help participants develop skills in plain language science communication are a key element of the training, and exercises will be used several times through‐
out the course of the two days. Participants are encouraged to bring their own science communication or outreach project material. Participants will receive feedback from the trainer, as well their peers, in a constructive atmosphere. Workshop participants will: 
Examine the value of dialogue as opposed to one‐way communication. 
Learn how to structure information to make it interesting, accessible, and engaging for non‐specialists. 
Learn how to adapt their content to wider audiences without "dumbing down” the information. 
Explore strategies for making audiences take an interest in their work. 
Learn how to use narrative in science communication. 
Develop and refine non‐specialist summaries of their own work. 
Examine best practices in communicating risk and uncertainty. 
Learn how to eliminate jargon from their work. 
Learn how to use metaphors effectively, as well as understand the pitfalls and impacts of using them ineffectively. 
Understand how audiences perceive the use of numbers, percentages, and probabilities, and how to use them appropriately. 
Explore the difference between public engagement and science communication. 
Learn about the use of effective design, data visualization, graphics, and animation to convey information. 
Participate in a Science Communication Laboratory, in which participants work together to apply what they have learned and provide constructive critique in a non‐threatening atmosphere. Innovative scenarios will be used to expose participants to a variety of useful approaches. In addition to materials to be used during the two‐day workshops, participants will also receive take‐away reference materials to assist them with their own science communication and outreach work, as well as two hours of post‐
workshop consultation. Workshop Schedule
