CAD Industry
Computer-aided Design (CAD) or
Computer-aided Design And Drafting
(CADD)
Uses computer-technology to make
quick and accurate drawings,
intricate designs and designdocumentations
Modern CAD software makes 3D
renderings easily.
So, basically a computer program for
making engineering and technical
drawings.

1940s: Some of the mathematical
description work on curves was developed
in the early 1940s by Robert Issac
Newton. Robert A. Heinlein in his 1957
novel “The Door into Summer” suggested
the possibility of a robotic “Drafting Dan.”
However, probably the most important
work
on
polynomial
curves
and
sculptured surface was done by Pierre
Bézier (Renault), Paul de Casteljau
(Citroen), Steven Anson Coons (MIT,
Ford), James Ferguson (Boeing), Carl de
Boor (GM), Birkhoff (GM) and Garibedian
(GM) in the 1960s and W. Gordon (GM)
and R. Riesenfeld in the 1970s.
1960s: Found use in the aircraft and automotive
industries

CAD Industry
The first commercial applications of CAD were in
large companies in the automotive and aerospace
industries, as well as in electronics. Only large
corporations could afford the computers capable of
performing the calculations. Notable company
projects were at GM ,Lockheed and Renault
(Bézier) – UNISURF 1971 car body design and
tooling.
1971: Founding of MCS (Manufacturing And
Consulting Services Inc.) one of the most
influential events; supplied code to companies
such as McDonnell Douglas (Unigraphics),
Computervision (CADDS),
Calma,
Gerber,
Autotrol and Control Data.

CAD Industry
A few years ago, CAD quite an
exclusive computer-program
Was meant only for engineering
applications that needed high
degree of precision.
Only very large firms could
afford CAD software (and the
large,
powerful
computers
needed to run it).
And today………

small, and even individuals.
(Personal computing revolution,
and especially high end graphics
cards, cheaper memory)
Used in an extremely wide
variety of businesses.
To draw an object: Need to be
specific about the of lines, arcs or
any other shapes…..

Must specify where each line and
arc starts, where it ends, the
center point of the arc, the radius,
etc.
CAD Drawings
Must specify, units, scale.
