ALS Industrial
We assist clients to develop integrated condition monitoring plans,
provide staff training, relief assistance, data management and
auditing.
VIBRATION MONITORING
Most components, stationary or rotating, move about a reference
point. We measure and analyse vibrations to accurately diagnose
machinery and structural conditions. Vibration analysis will
diagnose developing or preexisting conditions such as:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Machinery imbalance
Misalignment
Bearing and gearing defects
Lubrication problems
Structural vibration
Motor defects
Environmental and construction / demolition vibration impact.
THERMOGRAPHY
All objects emit electromagnetic energy. We use thermography
to detect thermal variations identifying particular conditions
including:
• E lectrical equipment – poor connections or contacts,
overloading, unbalanced loads
• Boilers / steam systems – refractory / insulation breakdown
• Process equipment – location of solid, liquid and gas levels in
tanks and vessels, scale build-up and blockages in pipework,
defective valves, hot / cold air leaks
• Mechanical equipment – conveying systems, bearings, and
seals, drive belts and trains, turbo equipment, coupling
problems, open gear integrity, crushers, screens and pumps.
TRIBOLOGY
ALS Tribology provides independent assessment of the suitability
and condition of lubricating oils, greases, coolants, and fuels for
equipment operation, preventative maintenance, and diagnostic
purposes. Reports are made available through our online
WebtrieveTM portal allowing easy access to results from any
location. Regular oil and wear debris analysis, together with other
condition monitoring techniques, can accurately determine the
condition of your equipment allowing early detection of potentially
catastrophic failures.
Materials Engineering
Our experienced engineers and metallurgists have the capacity
to provide clients with answers to complex materials questions
including:
• Residual life extension
• Material selection, identification, chemical analysis,
condition assessment and repair strategies
• Metallography and microstructural characterisation
• Fatigue / remnant life analysis
• Stress and strain measurement
• Failure analysis and mitigation / root cause analysis
• Corrosion investigation and mitigation
• Coating assessment and specification
• Concrete diagnostics and repair strategies
• Creep and crack fatigue analysis of high
temperature plant
• Evaluation of cracks and flaws using fracture mechanics
• Litigation support and expert witness.
Inspection
ALS has a team of qualified AICIP and API inspectors who assess
pressure equipment including boilers, pressure vessels, pressure
piping, storage tanks and associated equipment as per the
applicable code and client requirements. We also perform thirdparty reviews for the construction of structural items and new
pressure equipment.
Using a team of experienced integrity engineers, senior inspectors
and senior NDT personnel, we provide Risk Based Inspection (RBI)
services. RBI provides cost benefits to clients via optimising required
inspection intervals for plant ensuring efficient use of resources.
Our engineers can prepare inspection work scopes outlining
required NDT and set required inspection intervals within the
guidelines of the applicable code or client specification. We also
provide repair recommendations and evaluate asset suitability for
continued service.
ALS has qualified welding engineers and WTIA AS1796 certificate
10 welding supervisors capable of inspecting welds and developing
procedures to international and Australian codes as well as client
requirements.
Profile & Capabilities Overview

Non-Destructive Testing
As a NATA endorsed technical leader in Australia, our technicians are rigorously selected, trained
and proficiency tested to ensure the highest standard of delivery. We perform NDT across a variety
of industries to demonstrate compliance with codes, client requirements and to support decision
making with regards to the safety and health of your assets.
Where required, our experienced technical consultants work with clients to undertake engineering
assessments, select NDT techniques, develop procedures and conduct high quality testing to inform
engineering decision making.
As an IRATA member we also provide Rope Access technicians providing a safer, more timely and
cost effective alternative to scaffolding.
Our national presence and local footprint gives our clients confidence in both responsiveness and
availability, whilst our rigorous approach to quality and excellence ensures we employ qualified,
competent and experienced personnel.
CONVENTIONAL NDT
TECHNIQUES
• Visual inspection
• Radiographic examination
(gamma and x-ray)
• Ultrasonic flaw detection
• Ultrasonic thickness testing
• Magnetic particle testing
• Dye penetrant testing
• Eddy current testing (welds)
• Holiday testing of coatings
• Hydrostatic testing
Advanced Non-Destructive Testing
ALS Industrial has a successful track record of delivering advanced NDT techniques achieved by combining our engineering expertise with inspection
techniques that offer increased defect detection and repeatable data analysis. We offer a wide range of methods to efficiently evaluate plant
condition and support Fitness-for-Service recommendations.
PHASED ARRAY AND TIME OF FLIGHT DIFFRACTION (TOFD)
ULTRASONIC TESTING
These techniques can be applied as stand-alone inspection
methods or in combination to deliver a highly sensitive inspection
strategy. Phased Array is a “reflective” ultrasonic method, similar
to conventional pulse echo, while TOFD is a “diffractive” ultrasonic
method, which is extremely accurate for defect sizing. Both offer a
number of significant benefits over traditional ultrasonic techniques
including accurate defect sizing, inspection of components with
complex geometry, allowing permanent records for future monitoring,
ease of data review, including complex evaluation and modelling.
TUBE INSPECTION
We offer eddy current, IRIS, magnetic bias and remote field inspections.
These inspections are used to identify tube condition affecting shortterm reliability and immediate remedial maintenance needs. We are
also able to identify trends for medium to long-term reliability and
maintenance planning. Typically we inspect heat exchangers, boiler
tubes and fin fan coolers.
LONG RANGE ULTRASONICS USING GUIDED WAVE
TECHNOLOGY (GWT)
We offer this inspection technique as a screening tool for the
inspection of inaccessible areas of piping. These areas include under
insulation buried piping and pipe supports to detect corrosion.
Benefits of this technique include minimal insulation removal,
reduced scaffolding and the ability to screen large volumes of piping
rapidly with increased inspection reliability.
ACOUSTIC EMISSIONS (AE) TESTING
Acoustic emissions are stress waves generated by sudden movement
in stressed materials. The classic sources of acoustic emissions are
defect-related deformation processes such as crack growth and plastic
deformation. Other sources can be corrosion product spalling, leakage,
matrix cracking, delamination, disbonding or fibre breakage, creep
damage and partial discharge. This technique is totally non-intrusive
thus providing major benefits to asset owners and operators. AE is
commonly used to monitor the condition of both metallic and fibreglass
tanks and vessels.
6
ALS Industrial
CORROSION MAPPING
ALS offer high speed corrosion mapping systems using Phased
Array technology and Rapid Motion Scanning (RMS) to identify and
quantify corrosion, erosion, pitting and mapping wall thickness.
These techniques can be applied to storage tanks and pipes that
are made of materials suitable for ultrasonic testing.
COMPUTED RADIOGRAPHY (CR)
The benefits of industrial radiography now have far wider
applications due to image capture and display developments
offered by computed radiography. Radiographic film is replaced
with re-usable flexible imaging plates that are processed using
laser reader technology resulting in a digitised image that can
be stored and displayed as an electronic file. This technology
has many advantages including shorter exposure and processing
time, rapid transfer and retrieval of images, reduced retakes,
no darkroom concerns such as chemical hazard and integrity
QA maintenance and production of digital images that can be
enhanced for increased detail and easily archived.
SATURATED LOW FREQUENCY EDDY CURRENT (SLOFEC™)
The SLOFEC technique is the world leading technology for fast
and accurate corrosion screening and has exceptional capabilities
to deliver unmatched high quality defect reports. The main
applications of this technique are the inspection of storage tank
floor plates, pipelines, plant piping and pressure vessels.
