position. There are provisions
to lock the device in both the

and there is an interlock that must
be opened before you can place
the device into the “GROUND”
position (see below).
is provided mechanically by a
yellow indicating rod attached to
the trip bar of the VFI mechanism
inside the tank. This mechanical
“trip indicator” is viewed through
a clear sight glass on the face of
the switch tank near the operating
handle. When the mechanism is
tripped, the VFI handle stays in
the CLOSED position and the
yellow Trip Indicator rod (see
below) protrudes from the tank
and is visible inside the clear
sight glass. For secondary TRIP
indication, the customer can then
look to the relay to see the faulted
phase. To reset the mechanism
after it has been tripped, the operator simply pulls the operating
handle to the OPEN position.
The mechanism is responsible
for resetting itself. No additional
cocking or verification of the
OPEN / Reset position is required.
Verified by Design: Simple and Reliable
Trayer has been using vacuum
technology for more than 40 years
and has integrated decades of experience into the basic design of
our switchgear. Trayer’s operating
handles on the vacuum loadbreak
switch and vacuum fault interrupter mechanisms verify OPEN
and CLOSED positions by design.
Trayer has developed fundamental
design elements in all of our products to increase the reliability of
our switchgear and simplify their
operation.
Vacuum technology does not
provide a visible open since the
contacts are sealed within the envelope of the vacuum enclosure.
Some manufacturers attempt to
resolve this “Visible Open” issue
with the provision of a pointer
or semaphore to indicate contact
separation, yet no “Open” contacts can actually be seen. Trayer
can provide a truly visible “Open”
set of contacts by incorporating Trayer’s patented Tri-Phase
Two Position
Visible Disconnect Window
Visible Disconnect device. The
contacts on the Tri-Phase Visible
Disconnect device are viewed
through a window on the surface
of the tank and are clearly visible
(see below). The visible disconnect device is a second loadbreak
rated switch in series with either
the vacuum loadbreak switch or
vacuum fault interrupter. Building
on the simplicity of the original
Trayer designs and patents, Trayer
now incorporates two mechanically interlocked operating handles so that a line crew must break
the load with either a vacuum
loadbreak switch or vacuum fault
interrupter before gaining access
to the second operating handle for
the visible disconnect device (see
below).
Trayer has expanded this optional
technology to now include an internal ground position. There are
two interlocking features on the
visible disconnect with GROUND
Patented Tri-Phase
Interlocking Handles
The Trayer Vacuum Fault Interrupter (VFI) operating handle
operates in the same way as the
loadbreak switch operating handle. Both mechanisms’ operating handles have two positions,
OPEN and CLOSED. When in
the OPEN position, the handle is
away from the switch tank. When
CLOSED, the handle is parallel
with the face of the switch tank.
Tripping power for the VFI mechanism is supplied by a potential
transformer on Trayer’s 3000 series VFIs and by internal current
transformers on Trayer’s 4000
series VFIs. The primary TRIP
indication of the VFI mechanism

Trayer has been providing Distribution Automation solutions since 1971. Trayer’s original
submersible vacuum loadbreak switches were
designed with automation in mind. These
round compact units were set on a mild steel,
hot-dipped galvanized stand with provisions to
mount the motor operators onto the switch and
stand assembly. The Trayer submersible “Motopak” is constructed from 304 stainless steel
and has provided nearly 40 years of field-proven
operational service. These Motopaks are fitted
with gear driven motors and have been successfully installed in some of the world’s harshest
environments.
Submersible and Vaultmount applications
come with many different requirements to get
the job done. Trayer provides many solutions
to fit the needs of our customers. Side-mounted
“saddle-type” stands allow customers to use
submersible traditionally top operable switches
as vault style switchgear. Stands are sold separately and several are prepared to add on motor
operator mounting brackets. For side-mounted
vault style applications, Trayer also offers two
sling rotation “knobs.” These knobs are welded
to the switch tank and assist with lifting a unit
off its pallet. Once in the air the construction
crews can rotate the switch in the sling onto its
side to be placed in to the “saddle” stand.
Trayer’s automation products can be fitted to
every vacuum loadbreak switch and vacuum
fault interrupter combination. Vaultmounted designs can be side mounted or bottom
mounted to fit the application. On rectangular
switchgear designs, Motopaks can be mounted
directly to the tank surface. Customers must
order optional mounting provisions at time of
construction. If the passageway for getting the
switchgear into the vault is tight, the customer
can order bolt-on automation accessories that
allow the switchgear to pass through the opening to be assembled in place.
Dry Vault SCADA Application
with Seismic Rated Stand
}CAT#3115-0CM
For dry vault applications, Trayer can provide
a lower cost automation solution by using padmount style water resistant motor operators.
Simply put, we take a single-sided padmount
design, remove the high voltage enclosure, and
build a stand to replace the base. In this photo,
Trayer has responded to another of our customer’s requests by designing a shroud to cover
the motor operators and protect the face of the
switchgear during transportation and storage
before installation. Included with the switch is
a seismic-rated stand and provisions to secure
the unit to the vault wall.

SCADA RTUs and
Over-current Protection
Trayer provides automated switchgear solutions in Padmount, Vaultmount and
Submersible designs. For consistency and
reliability, we manufacturer our own submersible and padmount low voltage control
cabinets. Trayer’s automation solutions are
self-powered from internally mounted and
fused potential transformers. Single-phase
or optional three-phase PTs are available for
control power, voltage monitoring and power
calculations.
Extreme Reliability Solutions
Trayer’s experience in Distribution Automation has been field-proven for nearly 40 years.
Trayer has provided many automated solutions for some very challenging applications.
Whether your project requires Differential or
Directional relaying, Primary Cable or Primary Loop Protection, High Speed 10 Cycle

Submersible Switchgear
Oil Fused Cut-out Replacement VFI
}CAT#4111-0AM2
Trayer’s new single-phase Oil Fused Cut-out replacement design is 40% smaller than our previous model. This 27kV – 600Amp - 12.5kA
vacuum fault interrupter has been redesigned to
provide the line crews with more space in their
vaults or manholes. The unit is constructed from
304 stainless steel and comes with a CT powered
submersible over-current relay. This unit stands
out by including a “truly visible” single-phase
visible disconnect device in series with the vacuum fault interrupter. As with all Trayer visible
disconnect devices, this visible OPEN contact is
an “isolation” point and is safe to use for testing
and grounding of cables attached to the equipment. Several mounting options are available.
4-Way Wet Well with Visible Disconnect
}CAT#102BSF2BVD2
If you are looking for a low cost reliable solution for underground protection look to Trayer’s
15kV, 25kV, and 35kV submersible switch and
fuse gear. Trayer’s Universal Fuse Well has been
successfully providing protection to underground circuits for over 30 years. This Trayer
custom design integrates the 200 Amp bushing
into the fuse cap, making it nearly “fool proof ” to
pull a fuse under load. The line crew will remove
the 200 Amp loadbreak elbow and park it before
gaining access to remove the fuse. After replacing
the fuse and installing it into the switch tank, the
line crew will then use the rated 200 Amp elbow
to energize the circuit. It’s safe and cost effective.
Full range current limiting fuses are available up
to 200 amps at 15kV.

}CAT#102SCM1
Trayer’s submersible switchgear provides reliable switching solutions in the harshest underground environments. These two, three
and four way switches are constructed from
304 stainless steel and are round and sized to
pass through common manhole openings. The
vacuum loadbreak switch mechanisms are 600
Amp rated with 10,000 mechanical operations
in liquid dielectric and 3,000 operations in SF6.
Customers can order their equipment with either 600 Amp bushings or 200 Amp bushing
wells. These switches have been installed and
operating in some of the harshest environments
since 1970.
Trayer’s round submersible switchgear designs
are also available with Trayer’s patented TriPhase Visible Disconnects. These submersible
designs come with submersible covers for the
windows to keep dirt and debris from building
up and blocking the view of the open contacts
through the visible disconnect window. The
visible disconnects in the OPEN position provide a safe working isolation point for testing
and grounding of 600 Amp cables without removing them from the bushings.

Trayer’s 15kV, 25kV, and 35kV submersible
switch and fuse switchgear designs are easily
modified to meet our customer’s growing underground needs. This four way switchgear design,
with two switched ways and two fuse protected
ways, was an answer to a customer’s request to
have their submersible equipment set up more
like their double sided Padmount “9” configuration, with loadbreak switches on one side and
fuse protected ways on the other side. It also
made it easier for their crews to get access to the
equipment from the open working sides of their
pop-up cover vault doors. This unit is shown
with optional Tri-Phase Visible Disconnects and
window covers. Full range current limiting fuses
are available up to 200 Amps at 15kV.
This Trayer submersible switch and Universal
Fuse Well unit includes three-phase vacuum
loadbreak switches in series with Trayer’s
Universal Fuse Wells permitting three-phase
OPEN and CLOSE of the circuit. Full range
current limiting fuses provide a safe, fast interrupting and effective way to protect your
underground circuits. Square and rectangular
designs are available to fit most vault openings.
Trayer’s 4000 Series 15kV and 25kV, single
phase trip, submersible VFIs offer the ease of
resetting a vacuum fault interrupter instead of
replacing a fuse. These 4000 Series products
are available in several configurations and footprints. Trayer supplies submersible rated, CT
powered, over-current relays with 24 of the
most commonly used fuse and relay curves
programmed into the relay. These relays are
“hot swappable” due to Trayer providing an automatic internal CT shorting circuit inside the
switch tank. This permits customers the opportunity to test, replace, or upgrade their relays in
the future without de-energizing the switchgear.

}CAT#G3102-2BVDG4M1
Trayer’s 3000 series 15kV and 25kV Vacuum
Loadbreak Switch (VLS) and Vacuum Fault Interrupter (VFI) mechanism’s modular designs
make modifications easy. Featured here is a
unit with four ways and each way includes the
patented Tri-phase Visible Disconnect devices
in series. This rectangular design allows for
easy replacement of any loadbreak switch with
a 3000 series VFI mechanism. This design is
available up to 6 ways with any combination and
placement of switches and interrupters.
Trayer offers a Tri-phase Visible Disconnect device with an optional internal ground position.
This three position (CLOSE/OPEN/GROUND)
mechanism is available in SF6 and liquid insulated equipment. Like its two position (CLOSE/
OPEN) counterpart, this three position mechanism’s operating handle interlocks with either
the vacuum loadbreak switch or 3000 series
vacuum fault interrupter handles, so that all load
and fault interruption is performed in the vacuum contact and not in the dielectric. A larger
viewing window is provided so that line crews
can clearly see the contacts in all three positions.
Trayer’s 3000 series 15kV and 25kV Submersible Vacuum Fault Interrupter switchgear is a
smaller design of Trayer’s original 2000 series
VFI patented in 1979. This smaller VFI frame
allows for compact vacuum loadbreak switch
and VFI designs to provide three-phase VFI
protection in the distribution circuit. The 3000
series products come standard with substation
class SEL over-current relays on board. Trayer
mounts all the current transformers and potential
transformers inside the tank. All wire penetrations are O-ring sealed into the low voltage control cabinet welded onto the switch tank. A fiber
optic communication cable is supplied so that the
relay technician doesn’t need to get into the vault
to download information or change settings.

The maintenance-free, 304 stainless steel, Trayer
8_5 Series represents our double-side access
padmounted switch-only units. The footprint
and horizontal bushing designs are sized to
make an easy retrofit conversion from live front
air-insulated switchgear to sealed dead front using the existing foundation. The vacuum loadbreak switch mechanisms are 600 Amp rated.
Every switched way comes prepared with motor
mounting provisions for SCADA motor operators. These units can be ordered with low profile bases and lift up hoods or with cabinet front
high voltage enclosures.
The maintenance-free, 304 stainless steel Trayer
38_5 Series combine vacuum loadbreak switching and vacuum fault interrupter and relay protection in standard configurations and design
to replace original equipment on their existing
foundations. This modular, double-sided, 6 way
design allows for many combinations of loadbreak switch and vacuum fault interrupter configurations. Cabinet style enclosures with lift up
lids for these longer units reduce the weight of
“old style” hoods. The horizontal operating handles are set up to add SCADA motor operators
in the future. Optional Tri-phase Visible Disconnect is available on both vacuum loadbreak
switch and vacuum fault interrupter ways.
The 304 stainless steel Trayer 802, 812, and 822
Series are the backbone of Trayer’s Padmount
line and have been field proven for over 35 years.
These 15kV, 25kV and 35kV class switchgear offer 600 Amp vacuum loadbreak switches with
full-range, current-limiting fuse protection.
Featured are Trayer’s Universal Fuse Wells which
accommodate liquid immersed current limiting fuses up to 200 Amps at 15kV. The Trayer
Universal Fuse Well is designed with safety in
mind. Trayer’s design integrates the bushing well
into the fuse cap assuring that a lineman never
makes and breaks load with the fuse. This “fool
proof ” design requires that the cable is removed
prior to getting access to the fuse cap.
Trayer’s 4000 Series offers the same footprint and
bushing layout design for easy retrofit applications.
This product line differs from the 3805 Series by
adding the versatility of single-phase trip 4000 Series vacuum fault interrupters. The single-phase
VFIs and accompanying single-phase or threephase trip relays are CT-powered from internallymounted current transformers. They only require
a minimum of 15 amps per three-phase way in
order to stay active. If there is a complete loss of
power, the relay restores and can trip the VFI within as little as 10 milliseconds. Trayer offers singlephase visible disconnects in series with 4000 Series
VFIs permitting customers to leave their 600 Amp
cables attached while testing and grounding.
Double-sided, 4 way designs are available in
standard 9, 11, and 12 configurations to upgrade
or replace original fused equipment on their
existing foundations. A typical 12 configuration is designed with a 600 Amp loadbreak
switch IN, two 200 Amp VFI load tap ways
and a 600 Amp three phase VFI OUT. The 600
Amp VFI provides primary cable fault protection and interruption, isolating a fault mid circuit. This increases reliability by keeping more
of your customers powered during a primary
cable fault. Optional Tri-phase Visible Disconnect devices are available on both the vacuum
loadbreak switch and vacuum fault interrupter
mechanisms.
The Trayer 48_5 Series offers the same footprint
and bushing layout design as the 8_5 and 38_5
Series units offering easy retrofit applications
of existing switchgear. There are many designs available to replace live front air-insulated
switchgear to old oil switches. This product line
differs from the 38_5 Series by adding the versatility of single-phase trip 4000 Series vacuum
fault interrupters and CT powered over-current
relays. This particular switch design offers single
or three-phase trip with three-phase Open/Reset/Close.
