The President’s Message
D ear
Members,
Fellows/
While I am writing this
message, most of you
must be preparing for
Indian Geotechnical Conference - 2010,
'Geotrendz' at IIT, Bombay, which is going to
be yet another memorable event. Prof. G.
Venkatachalam and his team of dedicated
professionals have been leaving no stone
unturned for making the 'Geotrendz' a very
fruitful conference. The organisers are making
all out efforts for rich technical deliberations
and making the stay of delegates as
comfortable as possible. The Organisers have
lined up an array of invited lectures to be
delivered by distinguished experts from across
the globe and over 290 papers to be presented
in different sessions of the Conference. A few
other activities are also organised on the
sidelines of IGC-2010. Forensic Geotechnical
Engineering Conference for TC 302 is
scheduled for 14-15 Dec 2010 at IIT, Bombay.
Dr. V.M. Sharma, a well known Researcher as
well as Field Practitioner, will deliver the
prestigious IGS Lecture-2010 on 16th Dec.
2010, 11.00 AM at P.C. Saxena Hall at IIT,
Bombay. I take great pleasure in inviting you
all to the Conference and the IGS Annual
Lecture.
Friends, the present Executive Committee is
going to complete its two year term on
December 15, 2010 and it is time to review
the activities / achievements of two years.
During this period, the society on the
recommendations of EC, took several
initiatives to improve the working of
geotechnical professionals and also the image
of the society. An incentive of Rs 20,000/was provided for every activity of the IGS
chapter and also for the Technical Committee.
Several of our chapters took advantage of the
initiative and organised series of activities on
different geotechnical aspects, however, the
work of Technical Committees could not
materialise and did not make
much progress.
Inspite of all odds, the IGC 2009 was
rescheduled and was successfully organised
in February 2010 at Guntur. Special efforts
were made by the Organising committee, and
were fully supported by EC. A large delegation
from India was sent to participate in ICSMGE
at Alexandria, Egypt. The delegation
participated in meetings, chaired/ co-chaired
technical sessions and also made presentations
during the conference. Likewise, IGS could
forward over 45 abstracts for 14th ARC at
Hong Kong and subsequently, forwarded 34
full length papers, which is probably a record
of its sort. IGS forwarded 19 nominations for
different Technical Committees of ISSMGE,
which were accepted by the International
Society. Dr. VVS Rao and Prof G L S Babu
continue to remain Chairman and Secretary
respectively of TC-302 on Forensic
Geotechnical Engineering, whereas, Prof.
Deepankar Chaudhry has been nominated as
secretary of TC-212 on Deep Foundations.
These are certainly proud achievements of
Indian Geotechnical society and also the global
recognition of Indian Geotechnical
professionals.
As you are aware, IGS-Ferroco Terzaghi
Oration (IFTO) series was instituted by IGS
in 2008 to recognise eminence in geotechnical
engineering in India as well as International
level. The First Oration was delivered by Prof.
Harry G. Poulos of Australia, a renowned
International Geotechnical Engineer on
October 2008 at Indore. The Second Oration
was delivered by Prof. M.R. Madhav in
October 2010 at Bangalore, which was
followed by a one day workshop at
Mysore. Both these activities were organised
by Karnataka Geotechnical CentreBangalore.
6th ICEG was organised at New Delhi from
8-12 Nov 2010 on 'Environmental
Geotechnics for Sustainable Development'.
The 5-day congress was attended by 328
delegates from all over the world, representing
about 40 countries. The Congress was
concluded on 12th Nov 2010 with 60 delegates
visiting the 40m high Okhla Landfill and 20m
high Badarpur ashpond. Several other
International activities were also organised on
the sidelines of 6th ICEG, which includes the
1st US-Indo Co-operation workshop on 7th
Nov 2010, ISSMGE Board meeting, 75th
anniversary of ISSMGE, TC-215 Meeting etc.
It was a meticulously planned and well
organised - a truly magic carpet International
Congress. The event has greatly enhanced the
prestige of Indian Geotechnical society. On
behalf of members of IGS, I express hearty
congratulations to Prof. Manoj Datta and his
team for these achievements.
In addition to activities organised by IGS
Chapters, initiatives were taken at
international level to improve co-operation
among geotechnical professionals. I thank all
colleagues of IGS Executive Committee for
their whole hearted co-operation and support
for all these activities.
Friends, recently the democratic process of
electing new Executive Committee were
successfully completed by IGS. The newly
elected EC will take over on 16th Dec 2010
during forthcoming AGM at Mumbai. I
congratulate the newly elected team of EC
and wish them a grand success. I hope that
under the able leadership of Prof. K S Rao as
President, IGS would attain new heights. I
thank the fellow members who participated
in the elections and also the election
office bearers for holding the elections
successfully.
The membership of ISSMGE is still an issue
which is to be followed rigorously to induct
as many members for ISSMGE as possible.
IGS has membership of about 3500, however,
the membership of ISSMGE is yet to touch
400 mark. I hope that the new EC will pursue
the initiative and continue to further the
objectives of IGS.
I wish all members a very happy New
Year!!
Er. Mahavir Bidasaria

6 ICEG : A Brief Report
6ICEG was awarded to the Indian Geotechnical Society in
October 2007 at the ISSMGE Council Meeting at Brisbane.
A 15-member Organizing Committee planned and executed
the activities with the guidance and help from the Congress
Advisory Committee (headed by President ISSMGE),
Environmental Geotechnics TC5, a National Advisory
Committee and a Technical Committee of the Congress.
The website www.6iceg.org was launched in the second
half of 2008. Abstracts were received till August 2009 and
final papers till June 2010.
6ICEG was held in New Delhi, in India from 8th to 12th
Nov. 2010 with the final day being reserved for site visits.
The theme of the Congress was Environmental Geotechnics
for Sustainable Development. 304 abstracts were received
from 40 countries. 253 papers were finally accepted (69
from India) and published in a 1800 page proceedings (2
Volumes + CD) along with 22 invited papers (including
Mercer lecture). The Congress attracted 328 delegates
from 31 countries of which 88 were from India. The largest
numbers of overseas participants were from Japan, USA
and UK. 161 papers (from amongst 253) were presented
in person in 14 parallel sessions. 18 invited lectures (from
amongst 22) were presented in person and one by video
mode in 8 plenary sessions. An exhibition was organized in
which 28 exhibitors displayed their products and services
at 32 stalls and also made presentations in a dedicated
100-minute Industry Session. There was "A Young
Geoenvironmental Engineers Debate" which focused on
Career Challenges and a panel discussion on R&D
collaborations which deliberated on Opportunities for
Research Partnerships. A special session was held as a
mark of the ISSMGE 75th Anniversary celebration which
dwelled into the past, the present and the future.

show on 9th Nov.; and a reception on 10th Nov. in the
form of a mela (rural fair with juggler show, puppetry, clay
pottery, bangle making on display). The companions
program comprised of 6 visits - to Dilli Haat, Humayun's
Tomb, National Museum, Cottage Emporium, Qutub Minar,
Akshardham Temple - and demonstration of Saree Tying,
