A new era in lighting
The lighting landscape is changing rapidly as further advances are made in
the digitalisation of lighting. This is increasing the scope, and demand, for the
application of intelligent lighting solutions featuring cutting-edge LED technology
combined with state of the art lighting controls. These exciting developments are
set to rehumanise the places where we live, work and enjoy.
As the lighting landscape evolves, so too does Views and solutions – in order to
meet the needs of its readers more effectively. This edition marks a slight change
in design, with, simpler, more accessible product information. At the same time,
and reflecting a more contemporary and sustainable web-based approach, more
technical specifications of each respective new lighting solution can be found in
the on-line catalogue: www.philips.co.uk/lighting.
Views and solutions – Autumn 2009
The digitalisation of lighting
In our endeavour to meet the needs of our customers, we are constantly
pushing the limits. Our innovation pipeline is delivering new, responsible forms of
lighting that improve people’s experience of light:
• Energy-saving solutions that help us create a sustainable future;
• Miniaturised LED solutions that increase design freedom in street lighting
solutions, such as our Mini Koffer LED, Mini Modena LED and
Mini Milewide LED;
• Solutions like our MASTERColour Elite lamps that are now bringing their
outstanding white light to outdoor applications.
LED lighting is at the forefront of the ongoing transformation of our lighting industry. Today,
LEDs are enhancing many features of the urban landscape, including public buildings, bridges,
footpaths, market squares and facades, as well as improving the quality of lighting in retail
outlets, hotels, restaurants, offices and the home. The light output from LEDs can be focused
very precisely, making it possible to highlight particular features of buildings while minimising
light spillage onto nearby roads.
LEDs provide a palette of millions of colours or a thousand shades of white light and dynamic
effects that conventional lighting cannot match in terms of design, scene setting and ambience.
Thanks to their miniaturised dimensions and low heat output, they can be embedded in
furniture, walls, ceilings – almost everywhere. And being digital, they are programmable, offering
unlimited scope for creative use and effective management.
Lasting efficiency
LEDs are highly energy-efficient and dimmable, thereby helping to reduce CO2 emissions. They
also have an extremely long lifetime (50,000 hours) and therefore require little maintenance.
High-quality white light
Over the past decade the quality and intensity of white light produced by LED sources has
improved immensely, making them an outstanding alternative to conventional light sources for
both indoor (retail, hospitality, etc.) and outdoor applications.

Urban authorities are being challenged to improve energy efficiency in order to
comply with relevant legislation and carbon reduction targets like Kyoto. They
are also facing calls to address the issue of light pollution, specifically for the sake
of night and nature preservation. For some two-thirds of the population, ‘night’
never really comes, due to light pollution. And there is a groundswell of public
opinion to have our lighting turned off, or at least turned down, for the sake of
all the creatures that frequent the night. Yet at the same time, safety remains a
paramount concern.
For many municipalities, intelligent lighting represents the way ahead. Intelligent lighting
provides the right amount of light precisely where it is needed and when it is needed. This
enables authorities to meet all requirements in terms of energy saving and obtrusive light,
whilst also transforming urban spaces into lighter, safer areas, thus strengthening city branding
and civic pride.
LumiMotion
A smart step ahead
Incorporating motion sensing technology and wireless communication functionality, Philips’
new, stand-alone intelligent lighting solution offers smart detection, so that urban lighting
installations dim up only when light is required and then dim down when it is no longer
needed. For example, when a pedestrian walks along a pavement the street lights switch on
automatically and illuminate the path ahead.
The system comes as ‘plug & play’: it requires no commissioning or additional wiring, which
makes it very easy to install. By intelligently sensing activity around it, the system adjusts the
lighting to a maximum level when there is activity, and to extremely low levels when there is no
activity at all. Dimming and the more precise aiming of the light help to reduce waste light, thus
saving up to 70% energy (and reducing costs), yet maintaining safety on the streets. This also
reduces light pollution that disturbs people and the creatures in the natural environment.
This intelligent and responsible approach to lighting management truly offers benefits all round.

TunLED – maintenance-free
LED performance
Tunnel operators need lighting for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians that also
minimises energy costs and disruptive maintenance.
TunLED is a LED-based luminaire for tunnel and underpass lighting. Its patented lens system
allows a more efficient distribution than with conventional technologies. Luminance is the same
while illuminance is lower which leads to less energy consumption. The optical concept also
improves the spacing-to-height ratio. Light output can easily be adjusted and there is a choice of
three different beams.
Slim and pre-cabled, TunLED is easy to install, while its robust pure anodised housing, reliable

This new addition extends our range of white light solutions, combining the lifetime, efficiency
and reliability of CosmoPolis with the colour quality over life of MASTERColour CDM Elite.
The lamp’s crisp, sparkling white light creates a more natural and inviting ambience and really
brings out the best in all different types of colour (Ra 90). This performance remains stable
over the long lifetime of the lamp.
The high efficiency of the lamp and electronic driver means lower energy consumption – and
so reduced CO2 emissions – as well as lower cost of ownership, and the system’s long lifespan
translates to reduced maintenance and replacement costs.
With this latest addition, CDM Elite MW lamps can now be used in many new applications,
enabling greater harmony in lighting design.
Being 50% smaller than conventional HPI and HPL lamps, MASTERColour CDM Elite MW
allows freedom in optic and luminaire design. The new socket design makes the lamp extremely
compact and improves efficiency as well as light distribution.

LEDs in general lighting... with
Fortimo you can!
Fortimo LED DLM is a family of LED modules and drivers designed for use in
luminaires for general downlighting. Fortimo represents a breakthrough in LED
energy efficiency, colour quality and light output, enabling ideal downlight
solutions for general lighting in indoor applications.
The new Fortimo LED DLM TD/I driver combines dimming with an independent gear housing
for remote installation. It has a 12 V connector, which can be used to connect up active cooling
solutions.
The Fortimo LED module system has been developed to incorporate increases in LED efficacy,
without changing the lumen output, colour consistency or shape of the module. August 2009
saw the first LED efficacy upgrade for the Fortimo DLM modules. This means a substantial
efficacy increase for the DLM 2000 lumen system thereby bringing it in line with the
1100 Lm DLM.

Lexel LED DLM system – creating
thousands of shades of white light
Lexel LED DLM system allows flexibility in ambience creation, with a choice of
thousands of shades of white light and different colours from a single light source.
Designed for retail, hospitality and entertainment applications, among others, the system delivers,
thanks to the unique optical feedback system, colour consistency between modules and over the
course of its very long lifetime.
Its pleasant, comfortable and excellent light quality contains no heat or UV, colour rendering
≥ 80 and excellent lumen maintenance.
This benefits retailers, for example, to choose the exact white colour temperature that fits their
products and to create inspiring and meaningful shopping experiences.
The Lexel LED DLM system - LED module and dedicated LED driver - offers a faster luminaire
creation process and a future proof solution.
The flexible Control interface is compatible with both DALI and DMX standards.
