Bergen County Utilities Authority Combined Heat and Power Cogeneration Facilities Fred J. Eckert, P.E. Senior Vice President Energenic, LLC BCUA CHP Cogeneration •Provides 90% of the electric energy consumed by BCUA Water Pollution Control Facility •CoGen engines use 60/40 mixture of biogas and natural gas •Biogas Production from digesters is 260,000 therms •CoGen system anticipated to produce 21,870,000 kWh of electricity and 7,500 MMBtu of recovered heat for the digester process •Significant reduction in air emissions contributing to Green House Gas and ground level ozone formation BCUA CHP CogenerationCogeneration-Savings • Electricity is largest cost for BCUA at almost $2.75 million, followed by natural gas at $1.5 million • 1st year savings of $400,000 in electric/natural gas purchase and cost avoidance of $2.0 million from biogas usage • Projected savings over 25 year life is approximately $26 million BCUA CHP CogenerationCogeneration-Design •Uses two GE Jenbacher JMS 420 GS-L.L model biogas engine generator sets with emission control and heat recovery equipment •Natural gas is used as backup source of fuel •Engine high temperature jacket water and exhaust heat is recovered to provide 5 MMBtu/hr per engine to the WWTP hot water system •Designed with gas scrubbers to protect downstream equipment from moisture •Carbon filtration system for removal of siloxanes Fred J.
