MSAA
ANNUAL REPORT
2014-2015
The Multiple Sclerosis Association of America was founded in 1970 and is a leading
resource for the entire MS community, improving lives today through vital services
and support. MSAA provides direct services and ongoing support to individuals, their
families, and their care partners. MSAA provides many types of free programs and
services – including equipment distribution, MRI assistance, consultation, education,
and much more – all of which are detailed on the following pages of our annual report.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system (CNS), which consists
of the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord. MS damages or destroys the protective
covering (known as myelin) surrounding the nerves of the CNS, and can potentially
injure the nerves as well. This damage causes reduced communication between
the brain and nerve pathways. Common MS symptoms include visual problems,
overwhelming fatigue, difficulty with balance and coordination, and various levels
of impaired mobility. Many experts estimate that 2.5 million people worldwide have
been diagnosed with this disease, and most people with MS are diagnosed between
the ages of 15 and 50. MS is not contagious and researchers continue to look for both
a cause and a cure.
MSAA strives to provide useful, up-to-date information on matters of concern to MS patients and their families.

Doug Franklin stands happily by the window in his
office at MSAA’s new headquarters. One of his
primary initiatives before leaving MSAA was to
orchestrate the sale of the former building – which
was no longer a fit for MSAA’s needs – along with the
purchase of a renovated, more appropriate home office,
where efficiency and cost savings could be maximized.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL
YEAR AT MSAA
“As a patient with
MS, it becomes very
apparent when an

about all aspects of daily
life. I thank you for all you

better.”

2 / MSAA 2014-2015 Annual Report
The 2014-2015 fiscal year has seen many great successes at MSAA – from
providing an array of vital services to tens of thousands of individuals with
MS – to securing a newly renovated and much-needed headquarters for our
home-office staff. This has been a very exciting time for everyone at MSAA
and for all of our clients!
“A Year of Direct Service and Online Program Development,” is the theme
for this year’s Annual Report, emphasizing the variety of services provided
by MSAA to fulfill our urgent mission of “Improving Lives Today!” Some of
the highlights of our many program accomplishments during the 2014-2015
fiscal year include nearly 10,000 people being assisted by MSAA’s Helpline
Specialists, more than 1,000 individuals receiving financial support for MRI
scans, and more than 4,000 assistive and cooling equipment items being
provided. This is in addition to more than 250,000 publications being distributed
and more than 1.2 million visits to MSAA’s website at mymsaa.org!
Many of those receiving these free, vital services during this fiscal year have
written to MSAA to express their gratitude. Throughout this report, you will
find excerpts from their letters and email.
But while the impact of our programs
and services continue to be extremely
positive, the upcoming fiscal year
will also be a little bittersweet. For
both MSAA’s President & CEO
Doug Franklin and Board Chair Sue
Rehmus, their tenure at MSAA is
sadly coming to an end. After 16
years of leadership at MSAA, Doug’s
long-range plans of retirement are
finally coming to fruition. For Sue,
whose service to MSAA included the
positions of Board Member, Program
Committee Chair, Secretary, Vice
Chair, and Chair, her maximum
nine-year term limit has been met.
In addition, MSAA Chief Operating
Officer (COO) Robert Rapp is also
retiring, after 16 years of devoted
service. All three of these dedicated
individuals will leave MSAA during
the upcoming fiscal year.
In a recent issue of MSAA’s
magazine, The Motivator, Doug
explains, “As I close my chapter
here at MSAA, fulfilling 41 years
of nonprofit management work, I can
look back on my charity career as well
as my time at MSAA as something
that was nothing short of a blessing to
serve. MSAA has improved so many
lives during my 16-year tenure and
we have enjoyed the dedication
“This morning Robert received his manual
wheelchair. With tears in my eyes, I thank you so
very much for this gift. The old wheelchair has
bungie cords to hold it together. God bless you.
I will keep you in my prayers forever.”
– R.B. from Yelm, WA
and professionalism of so many
hard-working employees and
volunteers. It has truly been a team
effort in every sense and I am so very
proud and so very fortunate to have
had the privilege of leading this
dynamic group of professionals.”
Sue concurs, “MSAA provides so
many wonderful programs and services
designed to improve lives today for
those who are affected by MS. It has
been among the greatest privileges of
my life to have been a part of the
governing Board of Directors for so
many years. My dedication to serving
the MS community goes well beyond
a professional level, as I am personally
aware of the devastating effects that
MS can have on family members. I
have devoted much of my work – both
before and during my time at MSAA –
to helping children and parents
understand the urgent needs of family

members when someone is diagnosed
with this challenging disease. My
deepest and most heartfelt gratitude
is held for the staff of MSAA who
believed in the value of my ideas and
efforts and helped give me a platform
to uniquely contribute to improving
lives today.”
In summary, the 2014-2015 fiscal year
was very successful for MSAA, both
in terms of providing direct services
to the MS community and online
program development. While our
current President & CEO, Board Chair,
and Chief Operating Officer will all be
greatly missed, we look forward to the
vital programs and services still ahead
in MSAA’s future, as we continue to
focus on our urgent mission of
“Improving Lives Today!”

The unique buoyancy and other properties of water, combined with its cool temperature, can create an ideal exercise
environment for many people with MS. As part of the Swim for MS initiative, MSAA offers a comprehensive online
Aquatic Center, providing information and resources to help people with MS begin a program and enjoy the benefits
of water-based exercise.
In the spring of 2015, MSAA released a new educational video designed specifically for the MS community. Titled
Introduction to MS Aquatic Fitness, this instructional video showcases numerous shallow-water exercises aimed at
improving function, performance of daily activities, and general health and wellness.
To make the instruction as inclusive as possible, activities are performed at various impact levels offering options to
personalize the workout. The video is available to view online or to order as a free DVD. Released at the end of the
fiscal year, this instructional DVD quickly generated hundreds of requests from interested MS clients.
The online Aquatic Center offers an array
of resources, including booklets, tip sheets,
webinars, inspirational videos, and more.
