Location: Kalina, Mumbai Architect: Mehul Shah & Kinnari Shah DSP Design Firm The GMS Motors head office is located on the top most floor of Grande Palladium at Kalina. Anomalies of the building posed various challenges during planning & execution stages. The design brief was that the interiors should complement the steel structure of the building. Hence, it was imperative for the lighting to be a part of the architectural language and merge with it homogeneously. One walks to the work place through a double height foyer space with a skylight above, which is lit using trimless, seamless linear light systems that are lost in the lines during the day and only fill in for the absence of daylight post sunset. The main work place or the tube has cabins overlooking the work desks in the centre and the owner's cabins at SIGNET CHEMICALS, MUMBAI the two ends of the tube. All Cabins are lit with linear surface mounted task lights, indirect LED coves and a pair of LUCIFER Wallwashers for the artworks. Ceiling in open office area has been given a modern twist with curved steel perforated panels. Lighting workstations is a floor task lamp which provides direct functional and indirect ambient glow. Area: 12000 sq ft. Location: BKC, Mumbai Architect: Ahsan Ansari, PFA Design Firm Pvt. Ltd. Cafeteria is where the façade of the building has been used in full tune to inspire a 'crests and troughs' design for walls and ceiling. The suspended lights create an interesting play of light and shadow on the folded walls and ceiling surface. Extensive and intelligent use of warm wood and textured stone, accented by a long orange wall as a backdrop to the office, creates an atmosphere that grows on the users and visitors alike. With most of the walls and ceilings not being perpendicular and irregularities in the ceiling heights, the space was envisaged with lights as a special design element. Light in all areas was used as a sculptural element which is either suspended from the ceiling, stands on the floor or is completely recessed. Signet Chemicals is a pharmaceutical company dedicated to building India's finest portfolio of globally acclaimed excipients. Hence, their corporate office had to be a cut above the rest. The reception area, enclosed in a slanted oval wooden shell, is lit using narrow aperture Directional Downlights from LUCIFER. On one side the 'light logo' is projected with Pollux from ERCO and a 'light installation' of Tom Dixon's Beat is seen on the other side. Narrow beam miniature Uplighters from ALDABRA, graze the passage leading to the reception. Quintessence Square Lens Wallwashers from ERCO, used for vertical Illumination of the orange backdrop in every cabin makes one perceive the space as brighter and bigger. The lighting scheme in the video conference room ensures proper illumination of faces, no glare and effective vertical illumination. Quintessence Double Washlights over the table and track mounted Optec Lens Wallwashers from ERCO on either side, render the most impactful projection. CASE STUDY: ERCO 3 the national gallery, london Photo & Text courtesy: TOP LONDON ART GALLERIES SWITCH TO LEDs The world-famous National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery, London, after intensive investigation concluded that ERCO's LED light is the future for museum and gallery lighting. With the introduction of long-life LED technology, regular lamp replacement and the associated danger of disturbing a painstakingly positioned lighting arrangement are set to become problems of the past. The LED's longevity, the reduction of maintenance costs and the reduced risk of damaging priceless exhibits are important arguments for new lighting technology for museum and gallery operatives. However, the 3 crucial questions are: How much energy can LED lighting save; is the lighting quality equivalent to the conventional sources and above all, how do LEDs fare in terms of the preservation of exhibits? The bar for measuring LED lighting quality was already set high since the existing systems were mainly from ERCO and, at the time of their planning, were state-ofthe-art. They included computer controlled regulation of daylight and artificial light. In terms of energy saving potential, since changing to LEDs, the lighting of the galleries now consume 68% less electricity, without the inclusion of savings made by a reduced thermal load on the air- conditioning. The issue of exhibit preservation can also be addressed because the light irradiation load on the artworks can be quantified using the respective spectral constitution of the light source. While daylight white LED spotlights, are not to be recommended for sensitive exhibits due to their stronger peak in the short-wave blue spectrum, the overall load of warm white LED spotlights is less than that of low-voltage halogen spotlights. A big advantage of LEDs in this respect is that their light is inherently free of the IR and UV components that are undesirable in a museum or an art gallery. LED light also mixes favourably with daylight. Red and Gold hues are no longer over-emphasised and overall this kind of colour rendition is well suited for most exhibits. the national portrait gallery, london LED and efficiency: The improvement in the efficiency of the new spotlight lighting over and against the previous offerings can be measured by the attained illuminance per watt. The National Gallery previously illuminated the artworks using Eclipse spotlights for 100W low- voltage halogen lamps all fitted with flood reflectors. Due to the low luminous efficacy of 22lm/W, the original accent lighting performed at 5lx/W, yet for an almost identical beam angle, the new Optec LED spotlights with Spherolit lenses achieve an efficacy of 23lx/W. There is a five-fold increase, by combining 62lm/W LEDs and the Spherolit technology. Colour Rendition and Photo spectrum: Warm white LEDs have a higher colour rendition index than day light white LEDs, therefore are preferred for colour-sensitive applications. To avoid lightingrelated damage, three factors have to be considered: the photo spectrum, the illuminance on the object and the duration of irradiation. Light Vision India (LVI), was awarded this project for their intervention in lighting solutions. LVI has always been dedicated towards employing and promoting the shades of Green throughout their projects. It was at Suzlon where LVI got the visionary support to not only showcase the lighting prowess but to go a step further and create new benchmarks in the world of Illumination. LVI undertook the task of creating lighting solutions for the exterior façade and landscape as well as all the public spaces within the interiors of the structure. The objective being to design a complete cohesive solution rather than just achieving the required energy levels. For LVI the project evolved into a beautiful canvas for possibilities. The design of the exteriors demanded that the lighting concept be as close to the green compliance norms as possible, in terms of both revealing ambience and crunching energy audit numbers. LVI designed a concept which alleviated the horizontality of the structure. The lights streaming out of the office spaces at night through louvers were defined at the top and bottom by glowing light bands, accentuating the roof and base. The idea was to make the structure hover over the serene landscape, distinct yet blending in. It became absolutely essential to take care of this design idea as light spillage would have been totally criminal at a green site. The beautiful landscape designed by Ravi & Varsha Gavandi (RVG), complements the architecture and essentially gives the campus an international outlook. LVI worked very closely with RVG to understand the needs of their design while advocating state-of-the-art technological inputs. The result was truly breathtaking. LVI was keen on retaining the subtlety of the space by introducing light fixtures at crucial junctures, playing with contrast, giving an element of surprise at places. The principles of energy efficiency and dark sky were taken on priority, without compromising on the ambience. The latest from Solid State Lighting technology and conventional technology were combined to achieve a grand result.
