QAC1.1
Minimum
workforce:
Organisations seeking approval to deliver the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Triathlon (QCF)
must have an appropriately qualified workforce, including:
A Qualification Administrator
A Quality Coordinator
At least one appropriately qualified Tutor
At least one appropriately qualified Assessor
At least one appropriately qualified Internal Verifier (IV)
One person may fulfil a number of these roles. However the internal verifier cannot educate or assess on a
course for which they are the nominated to be the IV.

have a minimum of a Level 3 qualification in coaching triathlon or the 1st4sport L3CCTRI/L3CCTRIQ
hold a Certificate in Tutoring in Sport (CTS) or a recognised teaching award or have attended a
programme of tutor training matched to nationally recognised standards
be an accredited British Triathlon Federation tutor and/or assessor
attend appropriate sport-specific qualification induction training
hold or be working towards the Level 3 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector
(QCF) or higher or hold a recognised equivalent; the 1st4sport Certificate in Tutoring Sport (CTS) or
have attended a programme of tutor training matched to national standards.
Important Note: Specialist expertise may be used, if required, to deliver or assess a specialised aspect of the qualification. This person will
not necessarily be required to hold a coaching, tutoring or assessing qualification. They are required to be a specialist in the area that they are
delivering or assessing.

Verifier:

Internal Verifiers responsible for the quality assurance of the qualification must:




have a minimum of a Level 3 coaching qualification in a recognised sporting pathway, preferably
triathlon
be an accredited British Triathlon Federation verifier
attend appropriate sport-specific qualification induction training
hold or be working towards the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment
Processes and Practice (QCF) or higher or hold a recognised equivalent; Unit D34, V1 the 1st4sport
Introduction to Internal Verification Practice in Sport or have attended a programme of internal verifier
training matched to national standards.
Note: It is acknowledged that trainee tutors, assessors and verifiers who may not meet the criteria as outlined above in full may still support
accredited tutors, assessor and verifiers until they are appropriately qualified.

QAC2.1
Health and
Safety:
All training and/or assessment must meet requirements of accepted safe practice in Triathlon, detailed in the
relevant publications. Additionally, it is required that there will be no adjacent distractions (e.g aerobics,
basketball and football) and, most importantly, no music. Centres must also ensure that all learners and
persons being coached wear appropriate sports apparel, including correct footwear for the surface and
environment.

Facilities
criteria:
Any training or assessment site must meet the requirements of accepted safe practice in triathlon, detailed in
the relevant triathlon publications, and provide the environment and equipment outlined below.
Assessment/training facilities for swimming





an indoor heated pool, a minimum of 25m in length
a minimum of two lanes marked by lane ropes (6–8 swimmers per lane)
areas that are marked out to prevent access from non-participating members of
the public
conditions where the level of light and temperature are appropriate to the participants’/learners’ needs –
assessment should only take place in such environmental conditions
swim training aids (eg kick boards and pull buoys).
Assessment/training facilities for cycling







a flat area of a minimum size of two tennis courts or equivalent
a flat, traffic-free facility with a concrete/tarmac surface
an area that has been risk assessed and coned off, as appropriate, from
non-participating members of the public
a minimum of 40 coloured cones
access to quiet open roads using either a closed-road circuit or quiet country-type lanes (eg industrial
estates, university campus road networks, specific closed-road cycle circuits); the area in question must
be risk assessed
high-visibility (fluorescent) bibs (to be worn by all riders and tutors)
helmets (to be worn at all times).
Assessment/training facilities for running




a standard 400m running track that is a minimum of four lanes wide
a facility where the identified lanes are marked for private use only
cinder, shale/tartan or grass surfaces
mini-hurdles and ladders or assorted coloured cones.

The following additional resources should be also made available:
a classroom-type facility with chairs to hold a minimum of 20 people with sufficient ventilation and
lighting
a data projector and laptop
a flip chart and coloured pens
toilets and changing rooms.
The Triathlon Agreement as the Technical Development Partner
If your organisation is not directly linked with the National Source Group (NSG) for Triathlon, the NSG will be contacted upon receipt
of an enquiry to determine your eligibility to make a qualification approval application. They will also be involved in the qualification
approval decision based upon the information provided within the application. The rationale for this being that there are safety,
resource and technical standards which must be maintained.
