Volume 25 Issue 3 May/June 2016 A Bi-Monthly Publication of St. Andrew Orthodox Church 4700 Canyon Crest Drive, Riverside, California 92507 Dear Parishioners, Christ is risen! Blessings and best wishes for a radiant celebration of the 40 days of Holy Pascha. Holy Week and Pascha is certainly the most glorious period of each year at St. Andrew Church. This is probably true for every Orthodox parish in the world since there is nothing more significant and salvific for the human race than the sacred Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ and His Third-Day Resurrection. Yet I also am so thankful to God for the devotion shown by our parishioners during these Holiest of Holy Days. The zealous attendance, the unquenchable thirst to be with Christ, and nearer to Him than we have ever been, the quiet, the prayerfulness, the flowers, the tears, the hope. It is really too much. One time Archimandrite Zacharias (Zacharou) of the Holy Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Essex, England, was visiting our parish and giving some lectures and he said to me, "There is enough grace in Holy Week and Pascha to sustain the Christian for the entire year." That is certainly our experience I believe. It is like a deep, deep watering that a tree receives and from which it is able to pull nutrients and sustenance through many a dry and desert-hot day. The taste of Holy Week and Pascha - so full for 40 days - stays with us all year, and escorts us to the Kingdom of God. Our deep watering with grace in these Holy Days nourishes us through those portions of the Wilderness we will wander through this year. May the Precious and Life-Giving Cross and the Holy Resurrection on the Third Day be fixed in our hearts and minds all day, every day, forever. Glory to His Third-Day Resurrection! Fr Josiah V. Rev. I would like to take this opportunity to write about the many ways our ladies show their love to their families and their brothers and sisters in Christ, their “Church Family”. Christ has commanded us to love one another. Women in general, and women of our parish in particular, show their love to all of you, our brothers and sisters, in their own unique ways. Hospitality and Food are among those ways. In the Old Testament we read many stories of hospitality. In Genesis 18 we read about the hospitality of Abraham. He showed his love to the Lord through hospitality and the Lord rewarded him by promising him a child in his old age. We also read about the widow who baked a cake for Elijah with the last handful of flour she had and she was rewarded. Here at St. Andrew, hospitality is a great strength of our ladies. They are ever so willing to feed the parish whether after Liturgy or other services - always willing to make a meal for someone who is sick or just had a baby; cook for the homeless, mercy meals following funerals, or provide meals for the monkiconographers during the times they were here painting the beautiful icons in our new temple. They showed their love to His Eminence Metropolitan JOSEPH, the clergy and guests, when our parish hosted them for Liturgical Seminars; the annual catechumens’ dinner, the Palm Sunday Fish Fry to benefit the NAB project, and many, many more occasions when the women show hospitality through the aroma of cooking with love. The women don’t just prepare food, it is the entire atmosphere of family togetherness and fellowship they create that nourishes the whole parish. They also always try to cook good and healthy food and are happiest when they see their families eat and enjoy it. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for the parish family to eat together every Sunday after Liturgy and after other services throughout the year. When we break the fast together for example after the Advent Fast or the Fast of Great Lent when we proclaim “Christ is Risen”, crack the eggs and eat the lamb! It is these gatherings that create the family atmosphere. What about when they have guests in their homes? Their hospitality includes having a clean and comfortable home for their guests and they spend time making the best meal they know their guests would like. The best compliment to the hostess is when her guests enjoy and finish it all. I know this is how I feel and I am sure most women here feel the same way. Please join me this Sunday in thanking all the women of our parish for their love and hospitality. May God grant them many years. On behalf of all the women in the parish, I want you all to know that we love you. Christ is Risen! In the one below, he captured the Paschal procession as it was going around the back of the church temple, with the lights from the candles forming one continuous ribbon of light. In the one above captures the faithful as they arrive to the front of the church, led by the clergy, the altar servers and the choir. Absolutely stunning. Thank you Nicolaus.
