Mary Ellen Neff-Miller District Governor, 14-E District 14-E 17 Carriage Road Greensburg, PA 15601 724-837-4303 • 412-610-3395 neff17@comcast.net June 2012 The Unifier Dear Lions, Lioness and Leos, I can’t believe that my year as District Governor is ending soon. It has gone quickly and smoothly , and has been a wonderful learning experience. I have had the opportunity to meet many wonderful Lions - all believers in our ability to make a difference, even though each of us is only one person. We know that we start with one, but , combined with one other Lion or many other Lions, we can do so much to make the world a better place. There are so many Lions to thank for, not only for helping the district to attack and accomplish many of our goals for the year, but also for all they have done for the people in this district. It is all of you who have actually done the planning, guiding, encouraging, and helping so that everything we had hoped to accomplish has been done to the best of our ability. The 1256 District 14-E Lions plus Lioness’, Leos, accompanying spouses, children and friends have provided a pretty big army of help! Think about the awesome accomplishments in this district this year! We have been expanding our services by planting our share of the 1,000,000 trees, as well as accomplishing our other initiatives. These trees have also become a statement to the world that we are concerned about our environment. We are responsible citizens and want to project that image into our communities. Projecting our image was one of our focus goals this year as well. We have placed strategic signs as we worked, and we have used the media to attract interest to district activities. More of our clubs have web sites and use Internet resources to help them keep their members informed. We have tried to provide more leadership information through our newsletter; we’ve also used it to help remind and organize district activities. We have tried to make a place for our youth in our activities to keep them involved, and have provided scholarships, activities and training for them. As a district, we have contributed time and talents to sight related activities, fed the hungry, and have emphasized our environmental projects. We have thought more about treating each other like family ; we’ve strengthened our bonds of friendship by providing community service together. We have tried to encourage leaders to listen more and speak less. You don’t learn by doing all of the talking, and , there is much to learn. Leadership training has been offered monthly, as well as, through Zone and Cabinet settings. The use of online leadership courses and resources has been encouraged. We have looked for more and different ways to give back to our respective communities, thus providing a positive role model for our members and potential members. Our motto, “We Serve” has become a part of our everyday relationships because that is who we are, and what we do. We have talked about the numbers of people that we, Lions, touched with our help all year. Think about how many people you, alone, helped. Add on those who received help from your club. Now add on the people helped through our District project contributions. Then add on those who have received humanitarian help thorough our Foundations or our disaster aid drives . The total numbers of people we each touch via our organization is unbelievable. Do remember, that if we weren’t there to provide so many different kinds of help for all of these people, their needs probably would not be met. Do you know of any other group that people can call on to ask for help any time and almost anywhere worldwide? We can be proud that we, the Lions of District 14-E, have provided another year serving those in need in our communities in even more ways that we did before. We have seen new needs and adapted our services. We have not given up, but have increased our service to meet expanding demands. It has been an honor to serve our local and world communities with you. I am forever in your debt. District Governor Mary Ellen Thoughts from our VDG’s... As we get ready to embark on a new Lions year, each of us should take this opportunity to do an analysis of our Lions Club by asking the following questions; How can we provide increased service to our community? How do we increase member involvement in our club projects, meetings, and activities? How can we increase membership while retaining our existing members? Can we develop creative and new ideas for fund raising? Have we identified members of our club who show leadership potential and offered them the training necessary to develop their skills? Are we effectively communicating our goals and objectives to the members? I’m sure we all have additional questions that are relative to our individual clubs that we can add to the list. How we answer these questions will determine the future direction of not only our clubs, but also the District. DG Mary Ellen, myself, VDG Lynwood, along with the entire District 14-E Cabinet and GLLAMSS Team are committed to helping you in any way possible. Please allow us the opportunity to assist you. DGE Dave Stitely THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH “By refusing to change we don’t retain the past, we only lose the future” Club Anniversaries Congratulations go out to the following Clubs as they celebrate their anniversaries in June! Chestnut Ridge Lions Club was chartered on June 23,1953. Monessen Lions Club was chartered on June 24,1948. New Alexandria Lions Club was chartered on June 18,1959. Rostraver Twp. Lions Club was chartered on June 18,1953. Trafford Lions Club was chartered on June 27,1945. Vandergrift Lions Club Was chartered on June 18, 1940 Vallley Run Lioness Club was chartered in June of 1989. Best wishes for many more years of service to your communities! Allegheny Township Lions Have a Special Induction The A llegheny Township Lions Club recently invited District Governor Mary Ellen Miller to conduct a special induction ceremony for them. What was so special? These new members are a couple, Larry and Rosemarie Swank. Their sponsor, Lion Allen Garland, joined them as they accepted membership in this club. Congratulations to the Swanks, as they move into the service activities of their new club, and to Lion Allen, who located and encouraged them to join his club. DG MARY ELLEN’S SPEECH AT THE TREE DEDICATION CEREMONY AT TWIN LAKES PARK “It is an honor for me and for the 1256 Lions in District 14-E, (Westmoreland County) to present these 40 trees to the citizens of our county to be enjoyed for many years by all who come to this beautiful Twin lakes County Park area. Our Lion motto is “WE SERVE” and generally we focus our efforts on meeting the humanitarian needs of those less fortunate than we. However, we do want to remind everyone that we do take care of our environment and that we do have environmental goals. We do value efforts to revitalize environmentally fragile areas, Our International President, Dr. Wing Tam, set a goal of 1 million trees DG Mary Ellen with Malcolm Sias, Planning Coordinator for Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation to be planted by Lions this program year. That’s a lot of trees, and, even though we have 1.4 million members worldwide, it was still a challenge. By the time we had left our International Convention in Seattle last year, we had pledged 4.6 million trees worldwide. We were very ambitious!! We knew that with the efforts of each and every one of us we could make a difference - We could plant a million trees. And so we began.... Again we ask, “Why trees?” Trees are like the lungs of the planet; they breathe in carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. They are “Air Scrubbers.” They prevent erosion, help preserve local water resources and provide habitat for wildlife. People worldwide depend on trees to provide fuel, food, medicine and housing. Planting a million trees is a very visible way for Lions to show each other and our world community that we care about our world and its people. We believe that each of us - every single one of us - can make a difference. The combined efforts of all of us produce amazing results for our families, for our communities and for our world. We believed and we planted 9,633,143 trees worldwide as of yesterday. Our next goal is to eradicate Measles, another one of the leading causes of blindness among children of our world. We believe that if we all work together, we can. With the planting of these 40 trees, we, the Lions of District 14-E, have met our goal. These trees are planted in honor of our 2011-2012 officers and members as a tribute to their unselfish service to our Westmoreland County community, and, are given to the citizens of Westmoreland County to beautify this area and provide a welcoming atmosphere for many years to come.” Mary Ellen Neff-Miller, District Governor, Lions International, District 14-E We are asking all clubs to donate to this event and to send all your riders to join us. Please contact Lion Cliff Nabuda at 412-335-3434 for more information on the items we need donated. Thank you for your help. Because two special Lions were not in attendance at the recent Spring Rally when ID Doug Alexander was to have presented them with awards, special surprise visits were made to these deserving Lions. Zone Chairman Jason Mesher received a Presidential Leadership Award, compliments of ID Doug, and an award for District Leo chairperson Achievements. These were delivered at a regular meeting of Jason’s home club, the Rostraver Township Lions Club. Lion Mark Tintori, of the East Hempfield Club, received an award commending his Sight Preservation, Awareness, and Action Initiatives; his award was delivered to his home. (I have offered to make other “House Calls” if need be.) State Convention News At our recent state convention in Gettysburg, the 857 attendees voted on and approved the following actions. Elected as your new district officers for the 2012-2013 year are: District Governor, David Stitely, 1st Vice District Governor, Lynwood Leeman, and 2nd Vice District Governor, Jason Mesher. We have, as a state, endorsed PDG Jack Schimmel of the Bushy Run Club as our candidate for International Director. We also adopted a dues increase of $1.50 for this coming year, with and additional $1.50 the following year. Thanks to all who made the effort to attend and support our candidates. WHITE CANE DAYS Thanks to everyone who participated in White Cane and submitted their information to me. This year, hopefully, we will be able to increase the number of participating Clubs. Even if your Club doesn’t hold a formal White Cane collection, perhaps you could consider holding a fundraiser and contributing those proceeds to a sightrelated project. All Clubs are reminded that donations received on White Cane Days are to be designated for sight-related projects only. If anyone has recently had White Cane, and hasn’t yet done so, please report the total man hours and amount collected to District White Cane Chairperson, Lion Kathy Stitely at (412)-864-4505 or via E-mail at queenbeez@comcast.net. It is important that District 14-E has an accurate figure of the total amount collected. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Early in the year, the Greensburg Lions Club arranged to have six trees planted somewhere in the complex around the Lynch Field Recreation Area in Greensburg. Realizing that quite a bit of muscle would be needed, they contacted the Seton Hill University Club for help. This was the ideal partnership since the Seton Hill Club has limited funds, and, the Greensburg Club has a small number of members. In addition, we had the help and entertainment provided by Lion-In-Training Zaida Walker, 20 month old daughter of Lion Josh Walker, a new member of the Greensburg Club. LIT Zaida kept DG Mary Ellen and several other Lions in both clubs busy while the remaining Lions provided the physical labor necessary for a quality planting session. King Lions Michael Daily and Jovonne Robinson kept the Lions on task, moving the work of planting at a brisk pace. A fun day was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Lions Janet, Cliff, Michael, Robert, Lynwood, Joy, and, the Seton Hill members for organizing this collaborative effort. The club was organized on May 22, 1940 and was sponsored by the Indiana Lions Club of Indiana, PA. They then chartered their club on June 18, 1940. Thank you for 72 wonderful years and best wishes for many, many more!!! Deadline to Charter a New Club Is June 20 It’s not too late to start a new club. You have until June 20, 2012 to turn in charter applications. A new club means an addition of at least 20 new Lions for your district, but don’t stop there. Clubs that charter with more than 26 members have better sustainability and longevity. Think of all that could be accomplished in your community if there was another Lions club to tackle the work. Remember, more Lions mean more hands for more service. MT.
