Gasoline
Oil is any greasy substance that does
not dissolve in water. Many different
kinds of oil exist. Most oils are lighter
than water and are liquid at room
temperature. People obtain oils from
animal, mineral, or plant sources. We
need to conserve oil to use it to heat
our homes. We can also use it to
make motorcycle helmets, glue, and
lipstick.
Petroleum has a great variety of uses
than perhaps any other substance in
the world Petroleum is developed
from the remains of tiny organisms
that died hundreds of millions of years
ago. Those organisms once lived in the
waters of river deltas and along
coastlines. After World War I, farms
started using petroleum in many new
ways too. The word petroleum comes
from Greek and it means "rock oil".
Gasoline is one of the most used
fuels. Gasoline starts out as
petroleum but once petroleum is
collected, it is separated in a refinery
and one of the products made is
gasoline. It is a major part of the
transportation and is used in cars,
motorcycles, lawn mowers, airplanes,
and more. It is used as fuel and when
it is burned it can create energy. It is
a nonrenewable resource though so
it won't be something that we can
use forever.
Natural Gas
Natural gas is a gaseous form of matter. We use it for powering electric
generators. We use it to heat ourselves. It is also a popular a cooking fuel. We
use it because it costs less. And we use it because it can be controlled easily
and it quickly makes heat someone desires. Industries use gas flames to heat
in coating, cutting, and shaping metals and other materials. Gas heat is used to
harden the tip or nose of space craft to make sure the space craft does not
burn because of heat. Meat packers use gas to burn the bristles from hogs.
Manufacturers use gas to make or produce brick and tile, cement, ceramics etc.
Gas is important. We use a lot in a year. In 2011 we used more than
600,000,000,000 cubic feet of gas natural gas. We're using it too fast!

compared to other
countries.
Coal
Coal is a black or brown rock that can
catch fire and burn. As coal burns, it
gives off heat. People use this heat to
warm buildings and to make different
products. Today, the heat from coal is
mostly used to make electricity.
Coal-burning power plants supply
more than half the electricity used in
the United States and nearly half the
electricity used throughout the world.
Diam
Coal
is found under the ground,and
miners must use machines to dig it out.
In the past, coal was the main source of
energy in many countries. However,
since the early 1900's, petroleum and
natural gas have become the main
sources of energy in much of the
world.
Introduction
Nonrenewable
resources are
resources that are
not easily replaced.
They take millions of
years to form in
some cases and for
people alive today,
we will not be able
to make more if we
run out. Learn about
the main kinds of
nonrenewable
resources inside our
brochure!
