We license users to copy extracts from your content The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) was set up by publishers and authors to issue collective licences to users of copyright content. The licences permit photocopying, scanning and digital reuse of extracts from print and digital publications and some free-to-view websites. This includes business and consumer magazines, books, journals, electronic and online publications, as well as press cuttings or documents supplied by a licensed third party. CLA licences allow business, public sector and educational organisations to reproduce published content legally and deliver an income stream for the copyright owners. Since 1983, CLA has collected more than 750m for distribution to publishers and creators. We distribute the fees to you The Publishers’ Licensing Society (PLS) represents the interests of publishers in the collective licensing of photocopying and digital use. PLS was established by the UK publishing industry to oversee a collective licensing scheme for book, journal and magazine copying and to stimulate innovation and good practice in rights management. It is owned by The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP), The Publishers’ Association (PA) and the Professional Publishers’ Association (PPA). PLS works to ensure that collective licensing protects and complements publishers’ primary business as well as making payments for copying use. Publishers can register with PLS to be eligible to receive revenue from the licences issued by CLA. PLSe is the Publishers’ Licensing Society’s free online account management service for publishers. PLSe helps you maximise the value of your content by ensuring it is included in collective licences in the UK and overseas. Our easy-to-use reports also allow you to track your licence fee income. By scanning the barcode of the title, users can get permissions delivered to their iPhone™ or Android™ device in seconds. To find out how PLS can benefit your business visit www.pls.org.uk About collective licensing n Publishers can register with the Publishers’ Licensing Society (PLS) to be eligible to receive revenue from the collective licences issued by the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA). n Collective licences represent most UK publishers as well as individual authors and visual artists who are members of the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS) and the Design and Artists Copyright Society (DACS) respectively. n CLA issues collective licences to business and public sector organisations on behalf of the copyright owners. n Most CLA licences now include digital and website content and publishers must opt in their digital content to be eligible to receive licence fee revenue when this content is copied. Opting in reinforces your copyright ownership in a digital world where free-to-view is often seen as free-to-copy. How to opt-in If you are already signed up to the collective licensing scheme then the easiest way to opt in to these licences is through your PLSe account: 1. Sign in at www.pls.org.uk using your username and password. 2. Click on the “Licensing Options” tab. 3. Opt in to the various licences by clicking on each one in turn and following the on-screen prompts or simply click on the “Opt in to all” button. If you are new to collective licensing, email pls@pls.org.uk. Collectively, CLA and PLS, together with ALCS and DACS, work to ensure that rights owners are fairly rewarded for the copying of their work. We represent publishers, authors and visual artists
