our support for more sustainable
building and living solutions,
Unitec students will be working
together to design and build a
sustainable house on Unitec’s
Mt Albert campus, for entry in
the 2009 Sustainable Habitat
Challenge (SHAC 09).
Our team includes student quantity
surveyors, landscape designers,
construction managers, architects,
carpenters, electricians, plumbers,
gasfitters and drainlayers. Business, public
relations and media studies students will
also be involved in the project.
OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking sponsorship from you,
our building industry partners, through
the supply of product to help us build
our sustainable house. This is a great
opportunity to support sustainable building

• A comprehensive research report on the sustainable house project.
• Provide a healthy living environment with a constant indoor temperature and moisture control
• Complete the house ready for judging by October 2009.
WHAT IS SHAC 09?
SHAC 09’s aim is to make building methods
for low-energy, low-resource housing a
reality for New Zealanders by showing that
a more sustainable lifestyle is practical,

recognises that educating today’s students,
planners, trade and industry professionals
and local government bodies is vital to
enable New Zealanders to achieve a
sustainable standard of living. This project
will educate our students on green building
practices, such as providing alternative

While the project’s main objective is to

effective and energy efficient, we are also
required to use building materials that
lessen the impact on our environment,
to highlight how we are currently using

and materials for the Unitec sustainable
house in response to current housing and
building needs. The project’s research
conclusions will be made available
to industry sponsors, students, local
government and the wider community.
