Proceedings of World Business, Finance and Management Conference 8 - 9 December 2014, Rendezvous Hotel, Auckland, New Zealand, ISBN: 978-1-922069-66-5 Financial Structures and a Conceptual Business Model for Not for Profit Organisations Ravi Bhat* and Pieter Nel** As society looks to the non-profit sector to solve important problems, a realistic understanding of funding models is increasingly important to realize those aspirations. This paper focuses on developing a strategic financial business model for the purpose of identifying a long term funding solution to sustaining a forest eco-system for a not-for-profit organisation. Funding models for not-for-profits and ecological restoration in New Zealand were reviewed. Two case studies: Tiritiri Matangi Island and Oronokui Bird Sanctuary in Dunedin were reviewed as examples of what can be achieved. The conceptual model developed also investigated how professional services needed by such not for profits could be monetized to reflect a dollar value to the provider and consequently to be eligible to claim tax deductions, as it apply to charitable donations. Recommendations focus on how to adapt a forest eco-system farmland into a financially sustainable model to run its operations.
