We offer three different types of language courses in the Languages for All programme: Beginners Primary Teaching courses (Spanish and French only) These courses are aimed at those with little or no prior knowledge of French or Spanish. The syllabus covers the equivalent of a Beginners course. Part of the class time will be devoted to update your language skills, and the other part to practice class activities appropriate for primary school pupils. These courses are suitable for students studying full time courses within the School of Education. Languages for Work courses (all delivered at City Campus) Using your languages at work means combining your language skills and your expertise in other fields. This is a great way to develop your career. The syllabus for Languages for Work has been contextualised to a professional environment, such as enquiring about services and facilities in a company/city, or organising a meeting date, time and venue. General language courses Students will explore different aspects of language and the cultures of the countries where the target language is spoken. In addition to developing a range of key skills and adopting different language learning strategies, independent learning will be encouraged along with classroom-based learning. The courses will concentrate on the use of language for communication using real-life tasks wherever possible. Pair and group work will be used extensively to maximize the amount of time the language is used in class. 8Q. Are the courses accredited? Will I get a qualification or credits at the end of my Languages for All course? All the courses are accredited and you have the opportunity to gain a qualification and credits. The qualification will be dependent on your language level when you start the course. For example, if you started at Beginners and attended for two years, you would gain a Certificate in Foundation Language Studies. If you started with a GCSE in the language, and joined Pre-intermediate classes, after two years, you would gain a Certificate in Language and Related Studies. If you started with a high grade A Level and joined Advanced 1 languages classes, after two years, you will gain a Certificate of Higher Education in Language and Related Studies. If you only study the first year of an award you will get 30 university credits. These credits can be used for continuing your learning of the same language at our University or are transferable to other institutions for studying the same language. 9Q. What assessments will I have to do? Are there any exams? The assessments consist of coursework, many done as class activities, especially at the lower levels. There are no exams. The assessments, the type of assessment task and whether they are done in class or not depend on the level and the courses being studied. The deadlines for the completion and submission of their assessments are indicated in the assessment details, which will be given to the students by their tutor around week 3. All courses are assessed. 10Q. When and where are the courses held? When do courses start? Courses start week commencing Monday 6 October 2014 and run for 26 weeks, 2 hours per week.
