Nov.30 – Last day to drop a full year course Dec. 3 – Fall/Winter term ends Oh no, I failed a mid-term exam! Now what? Don’t panic. It happens. You write a bad exam and realize your marks are not as high as you thought they would be by mid-term. Remember that the test is meant to reveal your knowledge to date. While the result may be an emotional blow it could also be providing valuable cues regarding your study habits and insight into the way the individual professor tests knowledge. The way you cope – your attitude and follow up actions - will impact on future success. Here are some tips to help you to address the situation: • Go over the exam with your professor or TA and determine where you went wrong – was it lack of knowledge or understanding, inefficient study habits or the format of exam? • Meet with a Learning Skills Counsellor WSS 4100. • Drop into the Learning Skills Help Centre WSS 4139. • Make an appointment with your academic counsellor to discuss the impact of dropping the course. © Can Stock Photo Inc. / joebelanger Wishing you health, happiness and academic success, International Week is a campuswide event, Running from Nov. 1014 with something for everyone! The final exam schedule is set to be released in mid-November. It is your responsibility to make sure you know the date and location of your exam. There are two potential conflicts that you may need to identify and address: 1. Two exams scheduled to take place on the same date and time 2. Heavy load conflict Here is how to handle both situations: 1. If you have two FINAL examinations scheduled in the same time slot (ie. Two exams scheduled at 2:00pm on the same day), you will be receiving an e-mail to your UWO account, which will provide details on how to proceed. 2. If you are scheduled to write more than two examinations in any 23-hour period, more than three in any 47-hour period, or more than four in any 71-hour period, you may request alternative arrangements through the Academic Counselling Office (WSC 191).This policy does not apply to mid-term tests occurring outside the December exam periods. WARNING: Travel is not a valid excuse for missing an exam. Do not make travel arrangements until the final exam schedule has been finalized by the Office of the Registrar. Internship: The Real Experience Piruthuvi Thurairajah, an intern from Environmental Science, recently completed a 12-month internship with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) in Kingston, Ontario. This is what she had to say towards the end of her work term... “As someone who excels better in a ‘hands-on’ environment, my placement showed me the ‘real-world’ uses of what I learned in school. This internship experience allowed me to meet and work with professionals in my field and learning from them was invaluable. Working at the Ministry of Transportation, I was able to experience what an Environmental Planner job entails but I also had the opportunity to learn more about other jobs associated with it; including what biologists, GIS technicians and archaeologists can do. Because of my work placement, I was able to travel to different places in the province that I wouldn’t have seen without this experience. My placement helped me narrow down what type of work I would like to do in the future and I would highly recommend Western’s Internship Program for everybody!” Above: Piruthuvi Thurairajah, holds a Gray Ratsnake at a “Species At Risk” training session for the MTO. @westernuSCIAC www.facebook.com/scibmsac 2
