Lighting Control Requirements of 90.1

New Construction
 Auto shutoff for buildings over 5,000 sq.ft
 All spaces enclosed by walls or ceiling height partitions
must have it’s own control (manual, occupancy based, etc.)
such that:


For a space > 10,000 ft2, 1 control per 10,000 ft2
For a space <= 10,000 ft2, 1 control per 2,500 ft2
Additional controls for applications such as case lighting
Renovation
 Certain individual space control requirements must be met
if more than 50% of the luminaires are replaced.



Exception:

Lighting intended for 24 hour operation

Bi-level Lighting Control

Additional bi-level control requirement must be met for lighting
tax deduction for new construction and renovations
including 24/7 operations.

Intent is to achieve additional energy savings through variable
levels of lighting power



Manual or automatic controls - or combination thereof
Two or more levels of lighting power in a space (not including off)
including:
 Step level switch dimming
 Fixture or lamp switching
 Zone switching
 Dimming
 Occupancy Sensing (if not all on one sensor)
Excludes hotel and motel guest rooms, storage rooms, restrooms
and public lobbies
