Three-day Tutorial Workshop on
Nature Inspired Computing for
Engineering Applications
April 6-8, 2015
This workshop will be limited to only
fifty
participants.
Hence,
early
registration is strongly encouraged.
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has its inception in 1909 through
the pioneering vision of late J.N. Tata. Since then, it has grown into
a premier institution of research and advanced instruction, with more
than 2500 active researchers working in almost all frontier areas of
science and technology. IISc is an institute of higher learning and is
constantly in pursuit of excellence. It is one of the oldest and finest
centers of its kind in India, and has a very high international standing
in the academic world as well.

Motivation
Organisms in nature cope with the demands of their
environments using solutions quite unlike the traditional
human-engineered approaches to problem solving.
Natural systems tend to be adaptive, reactive, and
distributed. Nature-inspired computing is a field devoted
to tackling complex problems using computational
methods modelled after design principles encountered in
nature. Natural computing or natural computation is the
field of research that works with computational
techniques inspired by nature: they draw metaphorical
inspiration from the processes of evolution, the operation
of biological neurons, models of social interaction among
organisms, and natural immune systems. The aim is to
develop tools (software, hardware or wet-ware/bio ware)
for solving complex optimization problems and for
modelling and simulating complex systems.
Syllabus:
Introduction to Optimization, need of nature inspired
optimization and problem formulation, Single and multiobjective optimizations, Constrained and Unconstrained
optimization and Combinatorial optimization, Parallel and
distributed computing techniques for solving engineering
problems, Computer programs using population, swarm
intelligence and biological methods for solving
classification, clustering and optimization problems.
Population based methods: Genetic Algorithms, Genetic
Programming, Gene Expression Programming and
Teaching-learning-based optimization.
Swarm Intelligence based methods: Ant Colony
Optimization, Artificial bee colony, Particle swarm
optimization, Levy Flight Cuckoo Search, Firefly and Glow
Worm.
Biological inspired: Artificial Neural Networks, Artificial
immune system.
Instructors:
1. S. N. Omkar, Chief Research Scientist, Dept. of
Aerospace Eng., Indian Institute of Science
2. R. Padhi, Associate Professor, Dept. of Aerospace
Eng., Indian Institute of Science
3. Invited guest lectures by scientists and engineers
from ISRO, DRDO and other organizations.

FACULTY PROFILE
Dr. S. N. Omkar is currently working as a
Chief Research Scientist at the Department
of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute
of Science, and Bangalore. His research
involves
both
computational
and
experimental approaches. Dr. Omkar is
pursuing several projects and research
work in the area of satellite image
processing. He provides and assists
Diploma, B.E, M.Sc, M.Tech students to
take internship to pursue research in
computational intelligence and computing (parallel and distributed)
field. During internship period, students have developed a number
of algorithms and used them for a variety of applications like road
extraction, flood assessment, crop classification, crop growth
analysis, urban growth analysis etc. The other facet of Dr. Omkar’s
research includes composite design optimization using nature
inspired techniques. He has used the state-of-art algorithms both
serial and parallel mode of implementation. His work in these areas
has resulted in 39 publications (31 Journals + 8 book chapters).In
parallel and distributed computing field he has published 7
journals. He has conducted several workshops and delivered a
number of invited talks. He is a member of several academic
committees. He has conducted a number of events for educating
school and college students.
