Association of Electro-technical Industry of the Slovak Republic „The Electrical and Electronics Industry in Slovakia Development“ Slovak Electro-technical Industry (ETI) Characteristic: - Represents the most important pillar of entire Slovak economy. - By total revenues in 2010 ETI ranks first, before the machinery industry. - With over 43 thousand employees is even one of the largest employers. It employs 12% of all industry workers (373 thousand people in total). - The most important exporter (before the machinery industry). - 188 companies employing over 20 employees were active in ETI in 2009. - ETI is very heterogeneous with many small companies and some giants forming the industry basis. - Slovakia is virtually the largest European TV sets manufacturing plant with production of more than 10 mil. TV sets per year. Principal Parameters of the Slovak ETI This development is in contrary to what ETI was experiencing before crisis, when revenues were growing sevenfold and added valued generation above fourfold. The number of workers was growing too. From 2010, total revenues of ETI companies kept growing with double digit dynamics. This was thanks to the largest Slovak exporter and the largest industry player – Samsung Electronics Slovakia. The overall industry growth was especially driven by the expansion of finalization plants, but also facilities linked to the automotive industry. In 2009, the crises and saving measures across all industry companies resulted in increased overall added value by 15 percent. This trend was noted in 2010 too. Strengths and Opportunities of the Slovak ETI: - Suitable geographical position of Slovakia, proximity of customers, solid infrastructure. - Zero exchange risk and conversion costs (following Euro adoption). - High level of tradition of electrotechnical secondary schools and universities. - The industry has been increasing in importance and its prestige is growing in long-term. - High level of diversification in terms of production types and number of companies. - Foreign and national investors extend production which signalizes their satisfaction with doing business in Slovakia. - Free labor released from plants with low productivity. - Manufacturing of cars and LCD TV sets represents new opportunities for components manufacturing and offers jobs for many sub-contractors. - Innovative domestic companies with own R&D develop too. - Acceptable labor price and sufficient workforce. - Strong conversion exchange rate decreased the attractivity of income for Slovaks working abroad and part of them may return back. - Sufficient number of industrial parks for the location of plants. - Establishment of regional innovation centers and technological clusters. - For a longer period of time already, both global and local companies have not been considering Slovakia only due to cheep production price, but also due to the favorable conditions for the establishment of business centers – these include technical support, service, in a few cases also design, or even R&D. - Already in 2009 was demand awakening in the key Slovak export marketsalso revives manufacturing of electric engines, DVD and Blue-ray recorders, lights, bulbs and fluorescent lamps manufacturers, as well as of a whole range of products for automotive industry. - In 2011, foreign investors (e.g. Honeywell, IBM, HP) announced creation of 2 500 new jobs.
