ASSIGNMENT INFORMATION

Attendance
Description
 Long term substitutes must complete Student Attendance Rosters (SAR).
 Be on time for your assignments! If you must cancel an assignment, notify the
sub desk far enough in advance so other arrangements can be made.
 When you arrive for your assignment, check-in at the school office and check
the mailbox of the instructor for who you are subbing to see if pertinent
classroom information was left for you.
Lessons
 Students must participate in constructive activities during class.
 Teach a lesson. Substitute Instructors are required to teach a lesson.
Instructors are required to leave lesson plans in their mailbox for substitutes.
 If there is no lesson plan, teach a lesson that you have previously prepared on
job market skills or the backup lesson provided to you at the fall orientation.
 If student have textbooks they can read and outline the next chapter.
 Videos should be viewed that only relate to the subject matter and are
appropriate for public viewing. This means the video promotes content area
education, does not have inappropriate language, excessive violence or
gratuitous sex scenes.
Classroom
Management
 Maintain classroom management at all times.
 Locate the site’s emergency security phone extension.
 Students must be on task and working.
 Do not allow students from other classes to visit with your students. Politely ask
them to return to their own classroom or activity.
 Tell the students that you need to leave a report for their instructor. Ask them to
cooperate so that you can write a good report.
 One student to a pass to leave the classroom.
 There is no eating or drinking in computer labs.
 Do not touch students.

Classroom
Management
 Do not raise your voice or use language that could get you into trouble later.
Keep conversations and discussions appropriate for high school students.
 Do not dismiss class early.
 Walk around the classroom observing students’ activities.
 Do not sit at the teacher’s desk and read anything except student work or the
class textbook.
 Turn off your cell phone.
 Do not leave the classroom for any reason. In an emergency, call the site
security or the front office.
 Do not take care of personal business or engage in personal hobbies/activities
while in the classroom i.e. internet surfing, knitting, reading the newspaper.
 As the instructor, you are the professional---dress appropriately. For example,
women, no low cut blouses or short skirts or dresses. Men, if you must wear
jeans, wear them with a blazer or suit coat. Cover up tattoos if possible.

 Substitutes are not paid for time in between class periods i.e. passing periods,
travel time or lunch breaks. Payment is per hour and is made based on time
worked.

Recorded
 Time sheets are not required for assignments. Work hours are recorded on a
substitute log based on assignments made by the sub desk. This log is used to
calculate your pay.
 Assignments are only made through the sub desk. Do not accept assignments
given to you by other instructors or other personnel or you will not be paid as it
will not have been properly recorded.
 If there is a change in your assignment due to a district schedule change, inform
the substitute scheduler immediately to ensure the change is recorded and you
are paid appropriately.

 Paychecks are issued on the 5th or 6th of the month depending on how many
days are in the month and whether the pay date falls on a weekend.
 Automatic deposit into your checking or savings account is available. The form
may be obtained through the accounting department.
