FAQ - MCB PREPAID CARD

1. How does the MCB Prepaid card work?

MCB has issued prepaid cards under 2 different networks - VISA and Union Pay International (UPI).

Once you have availed of a prepaid card, you can make use of it for payment or cash withdrawal by keying in your PIN on POS or ATMs.

The PIN will be communicated to you in a sealed envelope and it will be known to you alone. The balance on the card will decrease with the amount utilised.

2. Where can the MCB Prepaid card be used?

All MCB Prepaid Cards can be used at merchants’ Point of Sales [POS] or ATMs displaying the network logo.

3. Can the cards be used for online purchase?

Online Purchase can be made with the Visa Prepaid cards. Remember to register your Visa Prepaid card for the MCB Secure service which will allow you to shop online safely.

4. Which currency is available on the MCB Prepaid card?

The Prepaid card comes in several currencies.

For VISA Prepaid card, the card is available in US Dollars, GBP, Euro, South African Rand or Mauritian Rupees. The UPI Prepaid card on the other hand is available in either Renminbi or US Dollars.

Each currency will be available under a different card. Customer should purchase the card(s) as per his requirement.

5. Is there a minimum and maximum amount that a MCB Prepaid card can be loaded?

A minimum amount of MUR 500 can be loaded on the MCB Prepaid Card.

For cash and cheques, a maximum daily amount of MUR 350,000 or equivalent in foreign currency can be loaded. In keeping with its policy, the Bank reserves the right to request all necessary information on funds remitted by the customer to load a prepaid card.

For book transfers, the maximum daily reload amount is MUR 1,000,000.

The maximum annual total amount reload is MUR 1,000,000.

Note that the maximum annual reloading amount of Rs 1 million is per customer independent of the total number of cards purchased under his/her name.

6. Do I have to pay any fee when I purchase the MCB Prepaid card?

You will only pay an initial fee (MUR 150 + VAT) upon purchase of the card as per MCB’s charges.

A fee of 0.5% of the amount loaded will be charged with a minimum and a maximum fee applicable. Kindly refer to the bank charges for the current applicable fees

7. Can supplementary cards be issued on the same account?

No. The MCB Prepaid Card will be issued to an individual aged above 18 and he will be solely responsible for use of the card.

8. Can I purchase a MCB Prepaid card and give it to my child who will pay for his expenses whilst studying abroad?

The purchase is possible and cardholder will be accountable for all transactions with the card, including ensuring that permissible transactions are conducted with the card.

9. Are there any charges when performing cash withdrawal on an ATM?

No fee is applicable for cash withdrawal on MCB ATM. A fee of 1% with a minimum of MUR 75 is applicable on non-MCB ATM’s for both local and overseas withdrawal.

10. Is there a limit to the maximum amount of cash that I can withdraw on an ATM?

The daily withdrawal limit for Prepaid Card is MUR 10,000 for local withdrawals and MUR 20,000 for overseas withdrawals or equivalent.

However, some ATM acquirers set their own daily transaction limits. In such cases, you will have to perform the relevant number of cash withdrawals as appropriate.

11. What documents are needed during purchase of the MCB Prepaid card?

To purchase a MCB Prepaid Card, you will be required to fill in and sign the MCB Prepaid Card Application form.

For MCB account holders, a proof of identification – NIC if you are a local resident and a valid passport for foreigners, together with a proof of address will be required (unless customer is already KYC compliant).

Note that non-MCB customers who are residents of Mauritius, are also eligible for the MCB Prepaid card. A customer record should be created and normal KYC procedures are to be applied.

12. How can I reload my MCB Prepaid card?

Reloading of MCB Prepaid Card can be done at any MCB branch. Simply choose the selected card to be loaded and indicate serial number upon reloading as well as the amount to be loaded.

Reloading is possible in the absence of cardholder provided that a duly authorized person has presented his NIC and specify the card details (including the serial number, found at the back of the card, starting with S/N)

13. Can I deactivate my card when not in use?

Card deactivation can be done via our MCB website through the secure “Prepaid Card’ interface on www.mcb/cards.

14. Where can I access my MCB Prepaid card balance or transactions?

Balance on my MCB Prepaid card balance can be viewed via the MCB ATM or through the secure “Prepaid Card’ interface on www.mcb.mu/cards.

This ‘Prepaid Card’ Interface also enables viewing of the different transactions made on my MCB Prepaid card.

15. What happens to the remaining balance on card if I do not intend to use the card soon?

Customer can either keep the balance on card till his next transaction or can request to credit the balance to his account after deduction of prevailing fees and charges.

16. What happens upon expiry of the MCB prepaid card? Is it renewable?

The MCB Prepaid card is not renewable upon expiry. Customer should submit a new application form. Any balance on the current card is either refunded or transferable to the new card, if the customer requests a new card. Bank charges will be applied accordingly.

17. What is the customer hotline number for queries and card lost/stolen reporting?

In the event you suspect fraudulent use/s of your card or if it has been lost/stolen, you can immediately call our Hotline on (230) 202 5010 - lines are open 24/7. Likewise, if you suspect that somebody might have known your PIN, immediately notify the Bank through the Hotline.
